DS overheard my sudden "Oh My God!" from the bathroom and responded, in a daunted voice, "What did you say Oh My God for, Mum?"

This is what.

(Coin added later, cautiously, with tongs).

I usually decant spiders with a piece of card and a glass but I feel like I need a sturdier kit 😱

One thing that's really helped me is giving them a girl's name and talking to them reassuringly as I rescue them. 'It's ok Bella, you're safe. Let's pop you outside with your friends!' etc.

That's a great idea SnuggleBuggleBoo! If they are in the house I usually say, "oh where did you come from" 😂.

YoSof · 15/08/2023 21:08

It’s coming to that time of year isn’t it 😩

I used to be phobic, and I’m still not great with them but last year managed to just let them run free if they were downstairs. I don’t like them in my room so they get removed, NOT killed, if they’re in there.

I actually tell them out loud to stay downstairs and we’ll be friends, I like to think they listen. Oh and they get given names too.

Please, please don’t harm them. They do such an amazing job.

Is that in the UK??

Microwaveexpert · 15/08/2023 21:11

YES! Scotland. Bloody terrifying!

Mum2jenny · 15/08/2023 21:12

They eat the flies so I don’t care. Lovely pic of the spider though

A cardinal spider, I think? They can get pretty big and young ones can be quite pale. They can live for up to 8 years, and usually live in buildings or walls. They're pretty rare round these parts! Cool you got a picture of it!

ItsNotRocketSalad · 15/08/2023 21:17

myusernamewastakenbyme Stirmi or blondi? How old is she? It looks like she's rubbing her pedilaps together in glee!

She is beautiful! Does she sit there nicely or does she ever run off?

FatNoMoreSue · 15/08/2023 21:20

My cat ate one like that once. The squelch it made as his teeth pierced it still haunts my dreams. Like someone biting into a ripe strawberry.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 15/08/2023 21:20

This isn't my picture but I saw it recently and thought it was one of the most beautiful spiders I've seen.

FYI this one actually does have potent venom but they aren't found anywhere near the UK.

@Somethingsnappy aw really? Thanks, that's interesting to know even if it did scare the crap out of me!

Curiouscat101 · 15/08/2023 21:22

That’s the UK house spider just for info

ThomasHardyPerennial · 15/08/2023 21:25

The 'UK Safari' website has a great section on spiders, lots of interesting information.

Ah, he's not that big a lad. As long as he doesn't get hurt, that's the important thing.

I have an instinctive shudder response to spiders but thinking like this helps calm me down and feel appropriately gentle towards them. Thanks @NeverDropYourMooncup 😊

That would definitely give me a shock too I think! But we're in good company, because apparently it got it's name from Cardinal Wolsey, who saw them in Hampton Court and was frightened of them 😆

Somethingsnappy · 15/08/2023 21:28

Its, not it's. Bloody autocorrect!

WinterWitchy · 15/08/2023 21:30

We Indorexed the house yesterday, I can’t stand spiders since being bitten by one, ending up on a drip in hospital and having a chunk of flesh removed from the bite site. We’re in Scotland, I take no chances of going through that again.

Shes 3 years old and getting very big....she does move quite quick now when we get her out of her tank....she loves sitting on dh's hairy arms...she has never shown either of us any aggression.

I hate those ones. We get loads of them around this time of year. I once found one so big its legs wouldn't fit in the glass I was trying to catch it with!

Likewise with this one. I had to poke its legs into the glass so I could catch it

Sorry for the poor quality photos. No one wanted to come close enough to take a picture
