Bought cod, chips and peas last night, first time in about two years and I couldn't believe how much they cost! £14.70 😯

This was in seaside resort in Norfolk. I'm sure it was about £8.50 when I last had them.

35 for two, Cod and chips twice and two sides as the portions are miniscule, plus a can of coke etc each. I had a large sausage in batter on the side before and it was the size of my palm.

The fish and chip portions are like small lunchtime portions.

Where I used to live, one large portion of chips would be enough for 5 or 6 people, on the side with their main. These are not much bigger than a mcds large.

We have a fish and chip van that comes to our area on a Friday evening and it’s the best fish and chips I’ve ever had . It costs £19.50 for 2 medium cod ( good size) and a regular chips which is enough for 2 .

Recently in Cleethorpes & went to Papas on the pier. Eat in medium Haddock & Chips £11.99 - peas extra (can't remember how much)

Our local chippy does a Haddock & chips special £4.75 which is a small size fish with regular chips portion.

God I get the small special which is around £6.75. Not often tho

Elizadoloads · 13/08/2023 23:19

Between £10-£13 in my local, South coast.
Used to be around £8.50 around 18 months ago.

HalloumiLuvver · 13/08/2023 23:21

£8-£9 for fish and chips near me. (Haddock as I'm in Scotland. We also call it a fish supper rather than fish n chips Grin).

Greengrassohla · 13/08/2023 23:23

Cod chips peas and a can of coke x2 = £30

TheWayoftheLeaf · 13/08/2023 23:27

About £8 here in South London. But when I went to Cornwall it was about 12-14!

TheWayoftheLeaf · 13/08/2023 23:29

Although weirdly the kids portions do me and DO just fine or we'll split one adult portion.

If we fancy battered sausage and chips it's about £4 each which is good.

Bluebellbike · 13/08/2023 23:33

Between £5 and £6 for cod and chips at my two nearest fish and chip shops. Mushy peas 60p small or £1.00 large. Both shops serve delicious food. Bury, Greater Manchester.

Sometimes I think Mumsnet reads my mind!

Was driving past a few chippies tonight and wondered exactly this.

Haven't had a chippie tea in years..

StEtienne93 · 14/08/2023 00:18

About £15 in Birmingham, from a decent chippy.

dinosaurcookie · 14/08/2023 00:29

£16 for cod, chips and peas! Oxford...and not even the city centre! I need to find a new chippy!

NotLeavingWithoutTheSpringRolls · 14/08/2023 00:49

Paid £8 tonight for medium haddock and chips which is a pretty standard price here (East Yorkshire). For the same at my favourite chippy in Hornsea it’s more like £10.50. It’s a helluva lot more expensive than it used to be!

Tintackedsea · 14/08/2023 06:55

Tenner for a fish supper. It's big though and lovely.

TheThingIsYeah · 14/08/2023 07:35

@Pandaflop

Agree. Yes I get the VAT and the overhead arguments but they won't be making the batter, the tartare sauce, and turning the fryers on for that single customer. They'll be making a batch for about 50 or so, so I agree the sarky reply is a touch OTT.

Shurleyknot · 14/08/2023 12:50

I am on a diet so had to google the price but where I am just outside Dublin in Ireland a fish, chips and drink meal deal is apparently 12.50euro.

I actually sent this to my friends the other day when I got fish and chips.

I'm so excited that they do chips in a cone!!

Now I can show DH... whenever I say I fancy chips in a cone he laughs and tells me I made it up and it has never been a thing.

Chips in a cone is god level. When the vinegar swims in the bottom and you can dip the last few chips in it 🤤
