Bought cod, chips and peas last night, first time in about two years and I couldn't believe how much they cost! £14.70 😯

This was in seaside resort in Norfolk. I'm sure it was about £8.50 when I last had them.

£7.50 for best Hadock and chips ( take away) £12.50 to dine in.
£10 50 for same in Whitby
Or £17.50 to dine in ( top restaurant)

Moved recently, £7.50 for fish and chips, curry sauce was £1.50 , cans of pop £1.20… that was West Yorks, between Leeds and Bradford

Fifthtimelucky · 13/08/2023 21:59

My husband and I had fish and chips last night.
Haddock was £8.00 and small chips were £2.50.

Cod would have been slightly cheaper I think.

Takeaway in Surrey.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 13/08/2023 21:59

On holiday IOW currently.
Last night, 1 scampi (10), medium cod, chicken and mushroom pie. 1 large chips (not overly generous), mushy peas, curry sauce and Gravy, £33.
Could have had indian for that.

inloveandmarried · 13/08/2023 22:02

Fish, chips and either curry sauce or mushy peas comes to £15 per person. Seaside, south coast. It's an expensive meal now especially for a family. Far cheaper to get an Indian takeaway.

Davros · 13/08/2023 22:04

£13.95 fish and chips
£1.95 curry sauce
£1.95 mushy peas
London NW3. Very good f&c, huge portion of chips and big piece of fish

Gnomegnomegnome · 13/08/2023 22:06

About £15 but it’s Rick Stein.

gogomoto · 13/08/2023 22:11

£12 for medium cod and chips

gogomoto · 13/08/2023 22:12

Bristol area

TodaysTheShay · 13/08/2023 22:13

Just got back from Scarborough, they were asking £15 for takeaway fish and chips in the seafront chippy! No thank you! I bought 3 x kids meals for the same price. I live in a seaside town a bit further down the east coast, it's around £8 here.

CeriB82 · 13/08/2023 22:14

No idea what it is in the village down the road. But in town its a £11

when at work i prefer sausage, chips, sauce/peas and a drink from the chinese for £5. Lunchtime deal when its payday

Onehappymam · 13/08/2023 22:15

£10 North of Scotland. That’s an everyday chippy. Guessing a touristy one would be more.

SOWK · 13/08/2023 22:16

Staying in the Cotswolds. 3x cod and chips, a halloumi and chips, one mushy peas, three cans and one bottle of water was £44.50 FFS!

scrivette · 13/08/2023 22:18

Fish and chips £11 on Brighton Beach yesterday. A decent size as I shared it with DC.

Danikm151 · 13/08/2023 22:19

Mini fish and chips £3.50 ( it was £2.50 last year)
large £6 but if it’s cod then add £1

curry sauce or peas is £1.

but live in an area with lots of chippys so plenty of competition

Amammai · 13/08/2023 22:21

We are currently in Norfolk and I wouldn’t believe the price of fish and chips at Gorleston - £12.00 for cod and chips and nearly £15 for haddock and chips!

A large portion of chips was only £2.70 so the fish was the very costly bit!

In a pub/restaurant I would expect that price but not from a seaside chippy to take away and eat on a bench!

SellFridges · 13/08/2023 22:27

Ours has gone up about 25% for our order (£17 to £22) since 2020 in Birmingham. Delicious food, but I feel for those who can longer afford the treat. Our chippy is a regular contributor to the food bank and other local causes. I have no doubt they keep the cost down as much as they can afford, while paying their staff a fair wage.

We had the same order on holiday, in a fishing area was £33. It was nowhere near as nice and, frankly, a big mark up.

Zwicky · 13/08/2023 22:29

£12 for large and £7.50 for small with peas. They do a cod bites meal for £5 though which is a decent size. It’s gone up loads but so has the Indian and Chinese and food generally. I went to McDonald’s the other day for the first time in about 4 years and was surprised by how much it’s gone up. Gas, electric, wages, fish, potatoes all gone up a lot this last year and 20% VAT on top.

Vicliz24 · 13/08/2023 22:30

We had a chippy tea last night. 2 haddock 1 chips small peas and small curry was £20.40p I nearly fainted in shock .

Mindovermatter247 · 13/08/2023 22:38

£12.50 for ours

Badbudgeter · 13/08/2023 22:42

It's £11 where I am. I really cant justify it. Aldi beer battered haddock in the airfryer and my homemade tartare sauce is about £2 with a salad for health purposes

Chewbecca · 13/08/2023 22:45

South east - mostly about £13 but the tastiest place in town does an OAP special for £7.50 which is fantastic. And you don’t have to be an OAP either, just happy with a smaller (but still reasonable) portion.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/08/2023 22:49

Paid £32 for fish and chips X2 plus 2 cans of coke today in Brixam, nearly fainted. It's less than £20 where we live.
