Hallo hallo

Can people recommend me their favourite fantasy novels for adults please x (no YA, I loved it when I was younger but I've finally outgrown it). Any sub genre, type, plot lines etc I don't mind at all.

Many thanks!

These ^^ fantastic books.

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading Anne McCaffrey in the past . She wrote a whole series regarding dragons but also many other stand alone stories. I found her style of writing very gentle and suitable for tweens so no graphic violence or horror.

Iam4eels · 13/08/2023 16:44

What sort of fantasy? I've recently read Crescent City which has led me onto Throne of Glass and ACOTAR.

Piggyisaway · 13/08/2023 16:51

I enjoyed a T J Klune novel recently

cornflower21 · 13/08/2023 16:53

Hobit or LOTR from Tolkien.❤️

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 13/08/2023 17:00

You'd have to have a bit of a search but almost anything by C J Cherryh. She does sci fi and fantasy. She has a huge back catalogue and is bloody wonderful.

I'd recommend everything she has written

Anything by Lindsay Buroker. Start with the Dragon's Blood series. Good characterisation and interesting plots. Also try the Free-Wrench series by Joseph Lallo. - slightly more cyberpunk than pure fantasy but a great read

helibirdcomp · 13/08/2023 17:07

Also adding a vote for Anne McCaffery Dragon riders series

helibirdcomp · 13/08/2023 17:11

If you want something definitely 'Adult'. Laurel K Hamilton Anita Blake series (Vampires) or her Merrry Gentry Series - more fantasy. Both contain sex scenes

Flo84 · 13/08/2023 17:13

Magic Kingdom for Sale Sold by Terry Brooks

Eebygumball · 13/08/2023 17:30

Depends what you like, I’ve read thousands, there’s some very good FB fantasy book groups. Small selection follows:

Epic fantasy’s like LOTR -

The Belgariad by David Eddings
Magician and the Riftwar series by Raymond E Feist
The Echoes Saga by Philip Quaintrell
Codex Alera by Jim Butcher
Ryria Revelations by Michael J Sullivan

Epic fantasy but with a bit more battles and blood n gore (but not grimdark) -

Legend et al by David Gemmell
The Faithful & The Fallen by John Gwynne
Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter

if you like more romance type alpha hero, try Lindsay J Pryor Blood Shadows series or J R Ward or Nalini Singh, all more urban/paranormal fantasy romance.

Uprooted by naomi novik
Assassins apprentice by robin hobb

LilacSorbet · 13/08/2023 17:36

The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune.

And of course, Terry Prachett (don't start with the first two, maybe go with Guards! Guards! or Going Postal.

Decktheschools · 13/08/2023 17:43

Dakota Krout, Michael Manning and Brent Weeks are my favourites. All very good authors and a mix of fantasy genres

Typz · 13/08/2023 18:15

Dreamsnake by Vonda something

Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis series

GrouchyKiwi · 13/08/2023 18:19

Another vote for NK Jemisin and Lindsay Buroker

Janny Wurts
TA White
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

If you like your fantasy a little smutty then Claire Sager, Sarah A Parker, KF Breene

BowiesJumper · 13/08/2023 18:26

As others have said-

  • Assassins Apprentice series by Robin Hobb
  • Magician series by Raymond E Feist
  • Legend series (and others) by David Gemmell.

all tremendous books!

Capitulatingpanda · 13/08/2023 18:31

Patricia Briggs her Mercy Thompson series

Yddraigoldragon · 13/08/2023 18:35

Guy Gavriel Kay.. try Tigana or the Fionavar Tapestry set. There are several others but these are my favourites.
Mercedes Lackey Valdemar series
Janet Kagan Hellspark
if you can find the Keltiad series by Patricia Kennealy Morrison (Copper Crown, Silver Branch and Throne of Scone) then jump at them, they are not available on kindle. A glorious adventure of Kelts in space, if you have any Celtic heritage or love Arthurian tales you will love this series.

AbsolCatly · 13/08/2023 18:38

Kelly Armstrong and Kim Harrison have both written series that are worth reading

If you are ok with (very) dark scenes and themes Mark Lawrence

Katherine Kerr and Katherine Kurtz mix a touch of history with fantasy

Jodie Taylor's Chronicles of St Mary's

Neil Gaiman both novels and graphic novels

The Witcher Books by Andrzej Sapkowski

Robin McKinley and T Kingfisher - I love the adaptations of fairy tales

MischiefManagedAlways · 13/08/2023 18:41

Robin Hobb, she has written 16 books in her Realm of the Elderlings series and I’m currently on book 7 and I am obsessed. She is wonderful!

Pushkinia · 13/08/2023 18:47

I really enjoyed the Trudi Canavan magicians series - I’ve read them all now. I still have a soft spot for Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Darkover series. I’ve been reading them since I was a teenager and still like them now.
