Do you still trust the police?

Soubriquet · 12/08/2023 18:38

When I got with my dh 11 years ago, he would laugh when I said I trusted the police. That they were someone in a position of power, who I felt I could trust. He never tried to sway me, just said, ok..you’ll see.

Now…I don’t. After everything they has happened over the last few years..Rotherham, Wayne Couzens, the girl with autism and other shit like that, I do not trust them at all.

@CuratedAndRated you may or may not have some decent points, but the way you write is really off-putting and makes me think you're not a serious person. Devouring mothers, human sacrifices, bishops, etc etc. It's hard to keep track of what your argument is and what you want to happen, because it comes across as, to be blunt, unhinged. Sorry, I just thought some (admittedly unsolicited) feedback might be useful if you do want to change people's minds on things you believe strongly in.

DojaPhat · 13/08/2023 13:35

I think what a lot of people are struggling with is reconciling the cognitive dissonance they're experiencing as a result of having always implicitly trusted the police to "protect" them, 'policing by consent and so forth', and the daily reports they see and read about where the police have abused their powers in quite a gross manner.

A lot of people who hitherto were among the groups the police did indeed 'protect', now see they no longer hold that position of privilege where policing is concerned and it's very much worried them. They very much see themselves and those around them are now equally in the firing line, so to speak.

It's a tough realisation to contend with, I grant you that.

The problem is that here in the UK we don't know what we want the police to do. But we have no hesitation in saying how bad they are when they don't do what we want them to do. Despite the fact that we haven't told them what we want. (Queue the "we want them to stop killing and raping women" replies ).

We want them to be ruthless when dealing with violent armed criminals, but we don't want them carrying weapons or showing any aggression. Because then they're being bullies.

We want them to spend hours sitting with someone having a "mental health episode", but then complain when they don't attend a car theft. Well they can't be in two places at once can they?

We want them to deal with ASB, but they'd better not speak to MY teenager, because my child is a walking Saint who wouldn't ever do that type of thing. How dare they, bullies in uniform picking on little kids, why don't they go and deal with real criminals! I mean, after they've sorted out the ASB of course.

We want them to be EVERYWHERE and attend EVERY call. Despite the fact there's only ONE officer for every 1500 of us. Yeah good odds there.

We pay them nothing and expect them to literally risk their lives for us. You can't expect someone to do an extraordinary job but pay them an ordinary wage, that's ludicrous. If you want walking Saints in uniform then we need to pay them as though they are walking Saints, otherwise the only people who will consider the job for the current pay, are NOT the people you would want in that uniform. The police employ people NOT robots. Putting a dickhead in a uniform doesn't make them stop being a dickhead.

The police were originally given the job of dealing with crime. Now we want them to be social workers, mental health professionals, youth workers, councillors, you name it, we want them to be experts in it. But we would never expect a nurse to deal with a shoplifter or a doctor to arrest a drug dealer. But we expect the police to do everything. The police in the UK have no equipment, no training, no resources and their pay is a joke.

We need to fix them before we can criticise them.

Yes, exactly this

Plus we need to look after them given the job has the third highest suicide rate in the country. And it's increasing

CuratedAndRated · 13/08/2023 13:32

It's an excuse to get out of work.

You see it with inept professionals all the time, they don't get sacked or imprisonment.

The useless Dr who can't diagnose a physical health issue and calls their patient primarily mentally ill and induces a whole host of illness as a result, sacred caste init.

Crappie abilst teacher who can't be arsed to do their job properly, sacred caste init.

Cowardly lazy cop, doesn't want to deal with a violent male criminals or actually do hard work, finds any excuse to waste time on 'social' issues rather than pass the work on to the relevant other profession.

I completely disagree with you on that. It's so frustrating that there is a lack of mental health support for people and that police officers time is spent picking up the slack.

I'm sure officers didn't join up thinking that they'd rather be sitting with someone and waiting for a mental health assessment instead of dealing with crime. That's a ridiculous thing to think. They don't want to be mental health professionals, they'd rather be arresting criminals and looking after their victims.

Of course there are bad police officers, just like their are awful people working in other professions. But they're not all as bad as each other and it shows a lack of thought process to think they are.
There is change happening though. Officers are encouraged to speak up against their colleagues and it is happening.

You sound unhinged with anger and really off putting to me when you post that seems in bad faith.

ShinyYellowTeapot · 13/08/2023 13:58

@CuratedAndRated that's okay

The NHS have the expertise, working outside your area of expertise has consequences.

I would prefer the NHS deal with inept medics and the police deal with criminals, that's what I consent to. Maybe tbe cops should prosecute all the medics who mis diagnosed patients and induced illness based on fabrications, fabricated induced illness is a crim after all.

Alas the woke in charge with their new state religion think they know what's best for us all.

No one is "looking down on dyslexics with no degree" (I assume you mean yourself? Well, you've zero idea yourself anyone else's qualifications, disability status, class etc are). I find your arguments hard to understand because of the terms you use like human sacrifice, caste, woke, etc. You must surely appreciate they are controversial, usually un-defined and inflammatory phrases, or you wouldn't use them. I personally find all these slogans off putting.

Sorry, I can't always follow YouTube videos because of my own disability, but I am familiar with his beliefs. I don't think I agree with him on most things but I can understand how his experiences have formed those beliefs, I think.

Vaccinated, you sound like you look down on others in life and make rediclious biaed opinions, in fact you sound like the people Matt talks about.

Individually or as a collective?
Collectively... no.
Individually... there's still good ones.

This. I deal with them a lot for work and feel that the good ones are getting fewer and farther between I'm afraid.

I am interested in your opinions as you do often work with them.

Do you think it's a top down institutions issue as Matt Goodwin suggests?

Do you think that people in general have worse world views, morals and ethics and bring them to work?

Or something else?

Poorlilthing · 13/08/2023 15:25

@CuratedAndRated

you freely admit on another thread that you like “no one” and can’t be bothered with “anyone” and fed up of being let down so now you just look out and focus on yourself

I suspect the police are just one of many many people and family members and institutions that you don’t trust
