Do you say Mum or Mom and where do you come from?

I apologise if this has been done before. I have always said Mum or Mummy and thought everyone did. On these threads I often see Mom or Mommy. I know this is the US version but it seems that it is more than that. I have assumed these posts have been written by AI or similar using US English but maybe that is not the case so please can you tell me what you call your mother and where you are from.

Mother...from London, but we called our parents by their first names always.

lashy · 12/08/2023 17:29

Mam. Durham.

StEtienne93 · 12/08/2023 17:33

Mom/mommy, I'm from Birmingham.

SpamFrittersYouSay · 12/08/2023 17:36

Born in Brum and lived in West Mids for nearly 30 years. Always said/wrote mum.

AgnesX · 12/08/2023 17:39

Mum.....UK, (my sisters do a very northern "muther" when exasperated! My SIL says "mam", she's from the north-east.

Mom, from Ireland, from the Irish word Mamaí/a Mhamaí/a Mhaim, not an Americanism.

One of my SIL is from Dublin and says mammy which must be how mamai sounds?

Myworldjusthim · 12/08/2023 17:53

West Yorkshire: Mum

Marchbug · 12/08/2023 17:53

I'm from Cumbria and have always said Mam. Partner from Brum so Mom. We live in NE now and I'm Mammy ❤️

mibid · 12/08/2023 18:03

Mum. I'm from Staffordshire.

BertieBotts · 12/08/2023 18:13

The American mom and Brummie mom are different sounds - American sounds more like a British English speaker would say Ma'am, and has closer links to mama (which, again, they pronounce more like ma-ma, and occasionally spell "momma"). The Brummie mom is o as in hot, but in a Brum accent the o is slightly elongated anyway. Not as much as in Yorkshire but in a similar way.

US English ma'am is different again, more like mayam to a Brenglish ear.

Mum, from Shropshire. Have friends in the neighbouring Black Country who say Mom though.

Mom. It’s a midlands thing NOT just an Americanism

I thought it was... but now you mention it I can't hear a Brummie say "Mum". Lot of ooooo sound in that accent....Sharoooon.

In N.Ireland its Mum/Mummy, S.Ireland its Mam.

AllAboutMargot · 12/08/2023 18:33

Nobody from Ireland says Mom... yes to Mammy (or Mam, or Ma, or..."me mudder") in the south.

The north I've never heard anything but mum/mummy.

Soubriquet · 12/08/2023 18:38

Mum and mummy. Lincolnshire

HouseofHolbein · 12/08/2023 18:45

Mom. I'm from the Black Country.

My mom is 94 and called her mom mom if that makes sense so that was in the 1930's well before American influence 😊

Cherrysoup · 12/08/2023 18:57

Mam, I’m from Newcastle.

Wildehorses · 12/08/2023 19:03

Dubliner here, always called my mother mummy then Mum (RIP) and my sons call me mummy / mum … I live in the Southside of the city, rarely hear “mam” I would say 90% of kids in this part of Dublin say mum/mummy

That isn’t true, in Gaeltacht areas or near them Mom is common.

No where I’m from it sounds like Mommy, a rounded soft sound not a harsh a.

Iliketulips · 12/08/2023 20:05

My DM from Midlands and always says and writes Mom. Lived in Gloucestershire most of my life, and I say Mum and write Mum. So my birthday cards are from Mom and those to my Mum, say Mum😅
