Do you say Mum or Mom and where do you come from?

I apologise if this has been done before. I have always said Mum or Mummy and thought everyone did. On these threads I often see Mom or Mommy. I know this is the US version but it seems that it is more than that. I have assumed these posts have been written by AI or similar using US English but maybe that is not the case so please can you tell me what you call your mother and where you are from.

I normally call her Mothership or mumm-ra.
I swear I'm a grown up. Honest. 😁

PuppyMonkey · 12/08/2023 16:21

In fact many East Mids say mam - not me though as I’m dead posh.

emma1103 · 12/08/2023 16:22

Mam, from Sunderland

IncompleteSenten · 12/08/2023 16:22

It appears to be hereditary btw because my eldest son (24) calls me mummala

AffIt · 12/08/2023 16:22

Scottish here, mum. Have family in Northern Ireland so mam or mammy is also acceptable.

I don't think I've ever known a Scottish or Irish person to use mom, but I believe it's very common in the English Midlands.

saraclara · 12/08/2023 16:23

I love it when a Mom speaker on Mumsnet gets chided for it and asked if they're American.
My mum used to do this when someone who did work for her occasionally said Mom (because she was from the Black Country). My mum would sneer at her 'pretending to be American', and couldn't be convinced (or refused to be) that it wasn't this poor woman affecting a US accent.

MaidOfSteel · 12/08/2023 16:24

I say Mam. I'm from North Yorkshire.
In all my 50+ years, I'd never heard 'mom" used in the UK until I started reading Mumsnet.

golddustwomen · 12/08/2023 16:29

Mom. West Midlands. Mum is posh where I'm from Grin

golddustwomen · 12/08/2023 16:30

@Devilsmommy mummy gives me the creeps 😂

Flossflower · 12/08/2023 16:30

Thank you very much for replying. It is interesting that people are saying ‘Mom’ is a midland thing because although I was born in the SE of England and live there now, I lived for a lot of my childhood in Birmingham (Harbourne). I still have the elongated ‘ing’ at the end of words. 😀

Edinburgh - mum

aintnospringchicken · 12/08/2023 16:34

Mum. I'm in Scotland

MichaelAndEagle · 12/08/2023 16:35

I think its hard not to imagine it in the drawn out American type accent.
When you hear it, its mom to rhyme with from.

Missymarple · 12/08/2023 16:41

I'm from the north east of Scotland and have always used Mam. There's even greetings cards here with Mam instead of Mum.

fireflyloo · 12/08/2023 16:43

Mummy or sometimes mum if I'm speaking to someone else about her.

My wonderful FIL was from Aberdeenshire and I am sure he always said ‘Mum’. Maybe he had changed to fit in with the people around him in the SE.

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 12/08/2023 16:46

BodGaoithe · 12/08/2023 16:47

Ma, Mam, maybe Mammy on occasion. I’m from Dublin.

ShortColdandGrey · 12/08/2023 16:48

East Scotland here, and we say mum, or Maw or Da.

ShortColdandGrey · 12/08/2023 16:49

I am a toonser , and it’s mum here. Never seen Mam but as accents change every 5 miles or so round here, I can easily believe it 😂
