Do you say Mum or Mom and where do you come from?

I apologise if this has been done before. I have always said Mum or Mummy and thought everyone did. On these threads I often see Mom or Mommy. I know this is the US version but it seems that it is more than that. I have assumed these posts have been written by AI or similar using US English but maybe that is not the case so please can you tell me what you call your mother and where you are from.

@Devilsmommy mummy gives me the creeps 😂

I know, it makes me cringe 🥴

Mum, Mummy (when young) or Mam or Mammy. Mums family were Irish. We live in Yorkshire.

Mom is definitely used within the UK and isn’t an Americanism.

HarridanHarvestingHeldaBeans · 12/08/2023 16:51

Mother or My Bloody Mother if talking about her. Haven't spoken to her in a couple of years, but would usually say Mum or Mother depending on her behaviour at the time.

HarridanHarvestingHeldaBeans · 12/08/2023 16:52

Sorry, forgot to say I'm from the West of Scotland.

MomOfBirmingham · 12/08/2023 16:55

Mom.
Obvs.

Makesmilingyourbesthobby · 12/08/2023 16:56

Mam - South Wales

I am a toonser , and it’s mum here. Never seen Mam but as accents change every 5 miles or so round here, I can easily believe it 😂

@Azaeleasinbloom What’s a toonser? Tried Google and Niobe the wiser.

I say mum, but most for this area would be mam (Northumberland).

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/08/2023 16:57

I say mum and from derby. Now live in Solihull and they say mom. DD made me laugh as she wrote mom on her schoolwork (too much US tv) and when I asked her she said they must have thought it was Brummie. She was born in London so defo not 😄

CluelessAboutSchool · 12/08/2023 16:58

I say both . I’m Canadian so I learnt it as mom . I try to say mum while in the U.K. ( I’ve been living here most of my adult life) but I sometimes write mom by mistake .

trulyunruly01 · 12/08/2023 17:00

I say Muvva and I'm from south London (transplanted to Mater-land).

Azaeleasinbloom · 12/08/2023 17:04

@Anotherillnes Toonser in North East Scotland refers to an Aberdonian - from the city . It is a faintly derogatory term which all the Tcheuters ( pronounced Choochters) who live rurally or in the smaller towns would recognise.
I live semi-rurally now in West Aberdeenshire, but I am most definitely a toonser to those born locally 😂

xXJoy · 12/08/2023 17:06

Mum, I'm in Dublin. I've heard Mam, Mama, Mom.

I don't care though, people just call their Mum what their mother told them to call her.

It's weird, I think Mam is a bit more family specific rather than region specific. My whole extended family uses Mam yet when I was at school my best friend called hers Mum. DH is a Highlander and uses Mum yet one of my friends is from the Highlands and hers is Mam.

ForestofBears · 12/08/2023 17:07

I grew up in East Midlands and say mum. DH is from West Midlands where we now live, so DC say mom and write mom in cards to me because it was DH who was writing the cards and helping them when they were too young to do it themselves.

FadeAwayAndRadiate · 12/08/2023 17:08

Mom. West Midlands.

Chanhedforthis · 12/08/2023 17:09

Neither

Mam- North East

DontCallMeBaby · 12/08/2023 17:10

Mum. But she was from W Mids and referred to me when talking to DD as ‘your mommy’. It was subtle, cos she’d lived elsewhere for years, but it was there.

RampantIvy · 12/08/2023 17:17

I say mum (from London), DH says mam (from Northumberland), DD says mum or mam (born in Barnsley)

Cowlover89 · 12/08/2023 17:17

Mam.

Cowlover89 · 12/08/2023 17:17

Durham.

MyMachineAndMe · 12/08/2023 17:21

Neither. I say mam and I'm from Yorkshire.

GigiAnnna · 12/08/2023 17:22

Mum, Liverpool.

fluffysticks · 12/08/2023 17:24

Mam - Newcastle upon Tyne

dottyshihtzu · 12/08/2023 17:26

From Wolverhampton. I say 'Mom' but always write is as 'Mum' which feels weird, but we were taught that Mom is American.
