if you haven't got a car to go out of town you haven't got money to spend at Wilko

What?? By not having a car that I'm not well enough to drive any distance, I save about £600 a month to spend on other things. Strange economics there, @RedToothBrush!

My Wilko deliveries have all been perfect. Must depend on your location - but should never be faulty, of course.

And there is a harsh reality that if you haven't got a car to go out of town you haven't got money to spend at Wilko in the town centres anyway.

That argument doesn’t work for Londoners. I don’t drive because I tried it & didn’t like it, so I moved somewhere it wouldn’t be necessary. It’s got nothing to do with what I can or can’t afford at Wilkos.

What? So people with medical conditions or who just dont want to drive cant possibly have enough money to buy a pack of pencils for 50p? Are you ok?

Wilko’s CEO posted an ‘open letter’ on their website today, after the administration was announced. It consists of about 700 words of corporate buzzwords, waffle, excuses and bullshit.
If I were one of the 12,000 Wilko workers about to lose their jobs, I would prefer it if the boss showed some humility, some contrition, an acknowledgment that serious mistakes were made by the directors and gave an apology.

I’ve never been in - I’ve just looked it up and there aren’t any in central- ish London. Which is a shame as it sounds useful, especially if it was on the highstreet in the areas where hardly anyone drives. But I guess you can’t pay London rents on cheap paint!

BarelyLiterate · 10/08/2023 18:32

@YallaYallaaa There’s a Wilko on Kensington High st.

PickoftheMix · 10/08/2023 18:38

Wilkos was always great for Xmas decorations (bought my tree there last year), kitchen stuff, toiletries and cleaning products. Plus they do pic n mix! My favourite! I'll really miss them!

I love Wilko's and spend money every weekend in our local store. Can't stay away there's always a "something" to buy there. Really hope that some store can be saved. Staff are lovely and helpful there.

The gardening stuff at Wilko's is way better than anywhere else as was their homebrew stuff.

But their online service was shocking. Us and three of our friends' households have had nothing but issues with damaged goods. So we all stopped ordering online.

Going to the two shops nearby were an effort - both haven't got dedicated car parks, you have to walk some distance to them. Which when you have bought great huge flower pots is 'interesting'. I bought some lovely ceramic ones from them during lockdown and would have loved more but the reality is no one else is as nuts as me at carrying half way across town to the car park.

And that's where I think it's probably gone wrong.

Why make the effort when you can go to the out of town B and M or Home bargains with the car park right outside? Much of what they sell is similar (though I don't rate either).

People don't go into town centres to shop in the same way. They will stop at our of town shops on their way past because it's much more convenient. And there is a harsh reality that if you haven't got a car to go out of town you haven't got money to spend at Wilko in the town centres anyway.

What an odd post, DS hasn't got a car, but has plenty of money to spend in Wilko and other places, he hasn't a car because he doesn't need one. I walk to Wilko and I have got a car
