Ours was in town. And would shut at 5pm or 5.30pm.

I never get a chance to go cos of work.
Whereas home bargains is open til 8, or 9pm.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/08/2023 15:57

The local one is very poor compared with the neighbouring B&M, home bargains and The Range. Its somewhere id go if passing but not specifically.

Honestly wasn't on purpose.

I was wondering if it was the site’s fault or if there was something interesting going on!

I’m hoping my Wilko will stay open a while longer. They’re surprisingly good for cat toys so I may need to stock up.

It's what happens in real life though. Like many I want it's support the high street but it's not always easy. I'm buses to always get my cleaning stuff from wilkos but in recent years they became unreliable, you couldn't guarantee what they had, always big lines at the tills and so on.

I know what you mean. I'm buses to always get my cleaning stuff from Wilko too. And I will wilko.

User1755387908 · 10/08/2023 16:04

I don't particularly like Home Bargains or B and M, never used a Range but often go to Wilkos, it's about 10 minutes walk and also has a free carpark, I won't go to the other shops I don't like and will just use the supermarket or Amazon instead. It will reduce footfall on the high street which will affect other shops.

BangingOn · 10/08/2023 16:06

Wilko stores generally did well when they were in thriving town centres without nearby retail park competition from B&M etc. Unfortunately those town centres are in the minority now.

Their range and availability has been worse since last autumn as the major trade credit insurers withdrew cover as the risk was too high, so many suppliers stopped trading with them. Once that happens businesses generally only go one way.

AmberGer · 10/08/2023 16:10

I miss the way wilkos was years ago.
The past few years they've been shit.
Whenever I look up a product online it says 'in stock'. To get this item click and collect it's £2 to store, so instead I go into store to find the product that has been listed as 'in stock' is actually not in stock.
They've also put in all (but one) of the tills self scan. But you have to queue for self scan until a member of staff says you can use it, even when they are empty.

Mochudubh · 10/08/2023 16:30

I love a Wilko. I think I e-mailed them once to ask if they had any plans to expand further north but they said not in the near future. sadly looking like that's now not ever.

Will be "dahn saaf" in a few weeks, I hope they're still open.

Emmacb82 · 10/08/2023 16:37

Such a shame, it’s one of the last ‘proper’ shops left on our high street. Will pretty much be left with charity shops, kebab shops and vape shops. Thinking of all those poor people just about to lose their jobs. Makes me wonder what on earth will be left in 10 years time. It’s becoming a very isolated, computerised world and I’m not sure I like it.

Cakey46 · 10/08/2023 16:38

I will miss their poo bags - there are none as good as their burgundy ones.

GarlicGrace · 10/08/2023 16:38

I rediscovered Wilko a couple of years ago, and have bought tons of stuff online (no car). They have proper ranges of things that work together, unlike B&M &co who seem to just have odd items they got cheap that season.

I'm properly sad about their troubles! Rather less sad that the Wilkinsons paid themselves 100% of last year's profits, however 🤨

BrunchBunch · 10/08/2023 16:42

I find it really useful too - being in the town centre, selling useful stuff, having its own brand of things, really handy. I used it a lot. DIY stuff and little things like that were especially good, as going to the huge B&Q elsewehre by car is so much more of an effort and overwhelming when you just need some small thing. And good for homewares like towels and stationery and stuff as well as cleaning products. Garden stuff, too. My town is otherwise very full of tourist shops and fast food, so it was so nice to have somewhere useful.

SageNightmare · 10/08/2023 16:46

My sister and I willed willkos today- both girls had tantrums over crafts but will miss willing it.

StarPotential · 10/08/2023 16:47

I went to Wilko today in a retail park and it was deserted as it always is. There is also a B&M and Home Bargains in the same area but I knew there would be queues there which put me off.

I bought some storage containers, a shampoo that was on offer and a doormat!

I also wanted batteries and chocolate but they were expensive so I got them in Asda instead.

goingtotown · 10/08/2023 16:48

They'd be better in a retail park with free parking.

Not if you don't drive!

dontcallmelen · 10/08/2023 17:05

I shall miss our local one as it was on the high street, so in walkable distance but the last two years or so has been poorly stocked lots of empty shelves/sparse such a shame as it was great for small decorating items/craft stuff/ stationery & they had some good quality home wares.
long standing staff friendly staff, feel very sorry for them.

Mutinyonthecrunchie · 10/08/2023 17:11

I used to love shopping in Wilkos but we don't have them on the Isle of Wight, nor Greggs either, I love the vegan rolls and import at least a dozen for the freezer when we go back to visit family.
R.I.P Wilko 😭

SoundTheSirens · 10/08/2023 17:18

I use our local Wilko, will miss it if it closes. It was the only place nearby that sold reasonable quality/ruggedness stackable plastic storage boxes. Handy for small DIY items too, much more so than B&Q which is a 25 minute drive. And the garden birds absolutely devour Wilko’s fat balls!

gothshot · 10/08/2023 17:20

I WILL, Wilkos

sageandrosemary · 10/08/2023 17:21

I shop there a lot and have done for years. Very convenient for us. Will be very sad to see it go.

I am gutted it’s going. My local one is fantastic, the one near my work not so much but it was obvious for a while that the popular branches were being well stocked to the detriment of the smaller ones. I feel for all the employees who are losing their jobs and I don’t drive and it was fantastic for all the house stuff. Now I will have to trek the the nearest retail park and go to four different shops.

The gardening stuff at Wilko's is way better than anywhere else as was their homebrew stuff.

But their online service was shocking. Us and three of our friends' households have had nothing but issues with damaged goods. So we all stopped ordering online.

Going to the two shops nearby were an effort - both haven't got dedicated car parks, you have to walk some distance to them. Which when you have bought great huge flower pots is 'interesting'. I bought some lovely ceramic ones from them during lockdown and would have loved more but the reality is no one else is as nuts as me at carrying half way across town to the car park.

And that's where I think it's probably gone wrong.

Why make the effort when you can go to the out of town B and M or Home bargains with the car park right outside? Much of what they sell is similar (though I don't rate either).

People don't go into town centres to shop in the same way. They will stop at our of town shops on their way past because it's much more convenient. And there is a harsh reality that if you haven't got a car to go out of town you haven't got money to spend at Wilko in the town centres anyway.
