Soo I’ve just had a call from our letting agent went to voicemail as I was on a call and my fucking husband hasn’t paid the rent for the last 2 months….

The bastard is at work and his phone has been switched off

I don’t have the money to pay it all - I did wonder why he had some extra money

We have separate accounts he pays rent etc I pay other bills it all works out fair

I am so bloody angry I daren’t phone the letting agent back and I’m off to check his emails 😡😡😡

Scammed by whom?

Scammed by whom?

A phishing email saying ‘rent not paid, pay immediately to this bank account or eviction’.

It relies on people a. paying rent (mortgage holders will roll their eyes and delete), b. not keeping track of their finances (so they don’t know if the rent has been paid or not) c. not understanding eviction takes months and requires a court order and d. being gullible enough to just send off the money with no checks.

Even if that’s only 1 recipient in every 5000 or 10,000, if they send tens or hundreds of thousands of emails, that’s still several thousand pounds a day.

I have no idea if that is what happened here or if the OP’s husband hadn’t paid but it has a lot of the classic signs of a phishing scam (the ‘catastrophic consequences if you don’t send money now’ is usually a good indicator).

Alternatively, a targeted scam from an employee at the rental agency would be even more specific.

We will never know since the OP has vanished.

You think it was a phishing email scam even though the opening line of the OP said it was a phone call from their agent?

(Having said that, I wouldn't have sent any ££ without speaking to the DH first).

VictoriaVenkman · 23/09/2023 17:22

Wonder why OP didn't come back

Edited

Scam call, then. The scam calls follow the same line as the emails. If I’d had as much spent on my credit card overseas as my answering machine messages say, I’d be bankrupt!

Makes the most sense.

Ha ha would be nice to have an update - even if it was a scam, the OP could let us know how it played out/warn others.

PP have been helpful and patient with DH’s meeting that seems to have lasted weeks, do consider it rude that OP doesn’t come back to the thread they started give a brief update.
