Below Deck attempted sexual assault *TW*

Just wondering if any one has seen the latest episode that’s being talked about everywhere.

Crew had all been drinking in downtime. One of the female crew had gone to bed, very drunk and was semi unconscious when a male crew member (Luke Jones) climbed up into her bunk with her. The production team stepped in straight away and said you cannot do that, she’s not conscious enough to consent to that basically. Luke Jones then tries to kick them out and get back into bed with her several times until he runs out and locks himself in his own room.

Another female crew member immediately wakes the captain who goes below deck and fires Luke Jones on the spot, basically tells him to get his shoes on and get off the boat and they’ll send him to a hotel. Within about 10 minutes of finding out what transpired he had him off the boat.

Incredible watch it play out on television. We all know it happens but to actually see it. You can only commend every person who acted on that boat. From the production crew to the captain for handling it perfectly and stepping in.

@SwordToFlamethrower just why??

BillyBraggisnotmylover · 10/08/2023 10:22

Laura absolutely deserved to go - her persistent inappropriate behaviour with Adam was appalling, and I felt bad for him that he didn’t really recognise it was sexual harassment. He shouldn’t have been made to feel so uncomfortable.

Below Deck generally does have a major binge drinking problem that I can see them having to address soon. So much bad behaviour is excused by the crew’s alcohol consumption.

Holy shit thank god there was a production crew there or you just know what would have happened. The fact he slammed the door while naked to push out the crew shows he felt entitled to do whatever he wanted. Scary to watch

Yes. My heart started beating faster at that part. It was terrifying.

Everybody needs a friend like Aesha.

She's amazing. Her first season was hilarious as people really didn't know how to take her.

Anyone getting vibes between her and captain?

The crew and Jason responded perfectly with Luke and I'm also really glad Laura went. She's an awful person but mostly she'd behaved in the same way so it would have been very hypocritical for them to keep her on the boat.

Bad news that this brings Joao back though. Urgh.

Lamelie · 10/08/2023 10:28

The captain Jason is very impressive. I’d clocked him as a great leader before. Very encouraging and also rolls his sleeves up- they often show him washing up and checking the guest cabins.

UndercoverCop · 10/08/2023 10:29

It was handled as it should be, but what if a camera crew hadn't been there? Aesha had gone to get food and then there was the power outage, Margot was safely in bed alone. You shouldn't need to guard a drink female from rapist colleagues.
I didn't like the very first time he told her to close her eyes on that night out then kissed her without her consent. She looked shocked.
I worked in bars etc when I was young and there was a lot of this type of behaviour, shattered beliefs that 'wooing' someone was essentially just sexual harassment. I had hoped that things had improved....
I can't believe he is still defending his actions.
Laura defended him because she sees nothing wrong in his behaviour because hers is so similar. She put her hands in Adams swimming shorts when he'd explicitly said no, straddled him, touched him etc.

MummyJ12 · 10/08/2023 10:31

I agree about the vibes @foolishone! I think Jason especially really likes Aesha. Although she’s in a serious relationship and maybe she just sees him as more of a brother. I can definitely see them together. She even puts his contacts in for him!

Theimpossiblegirl · 10/08/2023 09:38

If the production team wasn't there...

Thats what i was thinking. This guy got naked and into a bed with a drunk girl who was asleep. He did that in front of producers and a film crew!
what would he have done if no one was there? Scary to think about

UndercoverCop · 10/08/2023 10:34

Also ugh at Joao coming back, wasn't he horrific and misogynistic to Aesha on med? I watch all of the franchise's so things do get mixed up sometimes...

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 10/08/2023 10:34

When I first worked on boats it was described as putting a bunch of rabbits in a box. The fact that how to guard yourself against sexual assault is part of the induction is horrible

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 10/08/2023 10:37

I remember once my cabin mate was having sex with this guy who insisted on doggy so he was stood next to the bunk beds and he actually pulled back my curtain so he could look at me while he had sex with her.

MaidOfSteel · 10/08/2023 10:38

I've never seen this show, but seeing this kind of predatory behaviour is awful. I can't help thinking if how many women and girls this happens to, right across the world, when no-one is around to stop it.

I hope seeing this will make everyone realise just how predatory some men can be.

floribunda18 · 10/08/2023 10:41

Men like that need microchipping and some kind of alarm going off if they get too near another human being.

JellyBeanFactory · 10/08/2023 10:47

Which series is this?

That is fucking awful that poor woman

MissPerfekt · 10/08/2023 11:00

This show is disgusting, then new guests come on board they make bets on them and having sex is considered part of the package.

LittleBear21 · 10/08/2023 11:18

You could tell from the early trailers something bad was coming, because they hinted at the firing. But I had thought it was only drinking related because they had also reminded viewers of the Captin's no tolerance for drinking around the guests. I did expect Luke to be involved, and his behaviour around Margot was always off-putting; but this is just another level of awful. I hope he never gets out from the stigma of doing all that on TV.

SirenSays · 10/08/2023 12:01

I'm so happy Aesha came back as cheif, you can tell she really cares about the people she works with.

Luke looked at margot like a wild animal in the car, you could tell he wasn't going to leave her alone.

I watch it too though not completely up to date and your comment really jumped out at me because I’ve thought the same thing. Their drinking is crazy - they don’t even seem to have a good time, it’s just about getting as drunk as possible as fast as possible.

Remember Ashton’s behaviour? He joked about ‘Smashton’ coming out when he was drunk, but he was violent, aggressive and a sex pest yet seemed proud of it.

BillyBraggisnotmylover · 10/08/2023 12:20

Joao is the same in the series of Med we’re currently watching - talks about his drinking alter ego. No - take some bloody responsibility for yourselves!

TheWayoftheLeaf · 10/08/2023 12:43

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea thankfully the production crew is also trained in sailing so they can step in during emergencies like that

IloveJudgeJudy · 10/08/2023 12:44

I’ve watched all of the BD various series apart from Med series 3 which was very downbeat.

This incident upset me very much. I luckily have never been a victim of such an attack but for me part of the upset is related to how Margot blamed herself.

Right from the start of the season Luke was predatory (as was Laura). They suit each other. Luke had already gone to Laura on deck beforehand that night, I think? But the power cut put paid to that.

I can’t stop thinking about all the young women and girls who’ve been through something like this and who blame themselves. And, let’s be honest many people think like Laura that Margot was drunk that evening and had earlier allowed Luke to get close to her. It’s disgraceful. I hope that this incident opens up the debate again about consent.
