When did calpol get a syringe?

Really random question, but does anyone remember when calpol started coming with a syringe rather than a spoon? I need to know because in my Harry Potter fan fiction I’m writing, I want to describe the syringe that the potions teacher is using to feed poisons and antidotes to his pet ferret as like the calpol syringe (so you know, for really important reasons!). Said character (muggle born so would have had calpol) was born in 2007, but doesn’t have any younger siblings she could remember having calpol if this makes her too old.

People remembering earlier like 19901s are wrong. Unless calpol reverted back to spoons as my DS1 was born in 2007 and we didn't have a syringe then.

CurlewKate · 08/08/2023 21:14

Maybe I'm having a false memory! We certainly had a syringe, but possibly it didn't come with the calpol.....

Sister born 2004 and it was defo still with a spoon

My youngest was born in 2008, the Calpol I used didn't come with syringes when he was a baby, I used a bung and syringe set that the pharmacist sold

TimeToMoveIt · 08/08/2023 21:24

Can't remember but I was using syringes from somewhere in 2003

CeeceeBloomingdale · 08/08/2023 21:25

Mine were born in 2006 and 2010. Only the most recent bottle I bought had a calpol syringe, previously it's always been a spoon. I got a free syringe from nurofen in a parenting pack which we used but definitely not a calpol one until much later. When I think about it I probably bought sachets rather than bottles with the younger one.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 08/08/2023 21:27

Dd was born in 2001 and I don’t remember her having a syringe with the calpol. So the pp saying 2011 sounds about right as we’d have bought calpol up to about 2011 and then gone onto tablets soon after that.

Changingmynameyetagain · 08/08/2023 21:32

They definitely didn’t have a syringe in the 1990s. Calpol was reformulated in the late 1990s due to an issue with the way the suspension held up and the potential for overdosing.

ItsMyUkelele · 08/08/2023 21:35

My eldest was born in 2004 and I had a drawer full of calpol spoons for years. Definitely no syringe for at least 4 years after that.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 08/08/2023 21:43

It was early 2010s. I remember the syringe amazement vividly. My Grandmother was on Oramorph and we bought Calpol specifically as they had introduced the syringe. She had struggled with a spoon for her meds. Getting a bottle of Calpol when they'd introduced the syringe was a game changer.

100% did
I have a picture of giving it to my DD in 1998 -from a syringe

Maybe the GP prescribed a syringe with each bottle? You could get it on prescription.

I think it was the stuff they gave on prescription. I used syringes with ds1 in 1995 but they didn't come with calpol

Cookerhood · 08/08/2023 21:59

According to the Calpol website:
*Why is there a CALPOL® Syringe provided with every bottle?

In 2011, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a letter stating that a special spoon or syringe will be supplied with the liquid paracetamol product to ensure it is measured accurately. Do not use any other spoon or device to measure the product.

The accurate dosing of paracetamol is extremely important to reduce the risk of inadvertent overdose.*

KickingEAP · 08/08/2023 22:00

I had my first in 2005 and I don't remember a syringe then, but maybe I was just buying the generic liquid paracetamol rather than the branded stuff.

EvenlyDetermined · 08/08/2023 22:01

Still spoons when my eldest was born in 2004.

Ohmylovejune · 08/08/2023 22:08

96 and 98 babies here. Came with spoon but could ask pharmacist for a syringe, which I did!

Sugarfree23 · 08/08/2023 22:09

I remember two mums at work discussing syringes vs spoons with their babies. They were both on mat leave when i joined in 94 so conversation would have been around 1995.

Don't ask me why the conversation sticks in my head possibly because I was thinking syringe with needle WTF. 🤔

FuppingEll · 08/08/2023 22:12

Ds was born in 2007 and it came with spoon back then. Sometime when dd who was born in 2010 was small syringes came along. I'd go with 2011.

underneaththeash · 08/08/2023 22:15

VariationsonaTheme · 08/08/2023 20:41

Definitely by 2004.

No, it was a spoon then - (I had my first child in 2006) I think it was around 2010.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/08/2023 22:17

It definitely, 100% had a syringe in 2008 when I had my eldest.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/08/2023 22:18

No doubt at all re 2008 as she was a very sick baby so plenty of calpol needed and very vivid memories of it all

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 08/08/2023 22:19

They didn't have one in 2007 when my eldest was born as I remember trying to spoon feed her calpol. Must have been 2012ish, pretty sure they had them when the 11 year old was tiny.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/08/2023 22:20

DS born 2008 - no syringe, but you could get them if you asked the pharmacist nicely. Prescription meds came with syringes up to 18 months, then spoons.

DD born 2011 - was surprised to find a syringe in the box.

LizziesTwin · 08/08/2023 20:37

I think it has since my oldest was born in 98

Absolutely wrong. I was born in 1997 and during my entire calpol-taking years (not sure how old one is before you start to just take normal paracetamol?) I don't remember a syringe. I only ever took Strawberry Calpol, no knock-offs or ibuprofen because I was a fussy bastard - so perhaps in other brands. My mum was pleasantly surprised when I had DS in 2020 to find that it now came with a syringe.
