Name a film that's better than the book

Off the back of a discussion with DH where we can't think of any, is there a film adaptation (or tv adaptation) that's better than the original book?

I can think of some that are on par (Wolf of Wall Street, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, for example) but none where the screenplay was better!

I'm happy to read/watch any suggestions!

Probably controversial but I much preferred the film of Where The Crawdads Sing

Lord of the Rings - all 3 films. Tolkien needed a better editor.

Genuinely couldn't get on with either! Might give them both another go

This is on my watch list, but I've not yet read the book! Which first do you think?

Very personal taste but ...

Game of Thrones and House of Dragon
Poirot with David Suchet
Stand by Me
Romeo +Juliet

And probably most controversially ... The Hunger Games

Game of Thrones

I feel like they were so different you can't compare! It's like 2 different franchises, I think a bit like Bridgerton where the adaptation started to deviate from the books quite significantly

I'll agree with Poirot! Suchet made the character much more 3 dimensional

@pamplemoussemousse True, and I love the books and they obviously had to miss soooooooo much detail .... but the books are just so long and unwieldy....
Maybe it depends on mood (and time 😂)

Waaaaaa my favourites. I like the book too!

Ok, the series of Normal People was better than the book.

MorganSeventh · 08/08/2023 20:17

The Bourne films. They're completely different from the books, other than the main character's name, but much better.

Bladerunner. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is pretty much incoherent - like a lot of Philip K Dick's work IMO.

I would also say Lord of the Rings, if only for cutting the tedious Tom Bombadil section out, but that might be controversial amongst Tolkein purists...

The Princess Bride.
