Name a film that's better than the book

Off the back of a discussion with DH where we can't think of any, is there a film adaptation (or tv adaptation) that's better than the original book?

I can think of some that are on par (Wolf of Wall Street, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, for example) but none where the screenplay was better!

I'm happy to read/watch any suggestions!

The Shining
The Witches

Definitely The Notebook, don't bother reading it if you haven't!

Although I like the books I think I prefer the Hunger Games films to the books, I thought they were very well done and I've re-watched the films but haven't been tempted to re-read the books.

Don't agree on The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, I loved the book and would recommend reading it first. I also enjoyed the film.

Maybe Misery, but I've not read the book so I couldn't say.

Also preferred the first series of Bridgeton to the book

Normal People. I liked the book, but I LOVED it on the telly.

Justcallmebebes · 08/08/2023 21:15

Not a film, but Wolf Hall

Unicorn2022 · 08/08/2023 21:17

I can't think of any that haven't been mentioned. The shittest film of a book ever was My Sister's Keeper.

tillytoodles1 · 08/08/2023 21:18

You before me. I'd read the book twice before I saw the film. I've watched the film about six times now.

That's what I was coming on to write.

Sorry, but that award has to go to Bonfire of the Vanities. What a phenomenal book and I don't even want to mention wtf that "film adaptation" was 😳

Blaggingit123 · 08/08/2023 21:20

LOTR my first thought, but I have a feeling many purists will have the same feeling about that as I do about the Harry Potter comment up thread 😂

I really liked the Time Travellers Wife film as much as I love the book.

On worst adaptations, One Day all the way, though it’s one of my favourite books the film is unwatchable.

Schindlers list.

Philomena. Loved the movie, unfortunately not the book.

@Buffysoldersister I know we all preferred the movie ending but the book ending... hit harder.

The book ending was a load of crap and was done purely for the shock factor. Absolutely NOTHING leading up to that moment made the ending believable.

I refused to see the movie as I hated the book so much and was so angry about the ending. I didn't know it had a different ending. Maybe I'll watch it after all. Although probably not - I've boycotted all her books subsequently and don't want her to get a penny of my money or any kind of money due to me watching her stuff.

Re Guernsey Potato Peel Pie, I saw the film first, then found the book disappointing. Maybe it was the wrong way round to do it -

SlurpSlooChortle · 08/08/2023 21:24

Coraline- No Wybie in the book and it's not the same without him.

DaisyThistle · 08/08/2023 21:24

About A Boy? The book is great but it doesn't have Hugh Grant dying on stage singing Killing Me Softly to a load of hostile tweens. And it really should.

Ridingthegravytrain · 08/08/2023 21:25

Carrie (the original)

WiggelyWooWorm · 08/08/2023 21:25

Absolutely 100% Jaws.

The book is really bloody awful. Too many bad sex scenes. Not enough shark.
