Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

I peel mushrooms for a salad but just rub if I’m cooking them.

That whole families didn’t share towels - my mum had a weird thing about washing them so my sisters and I shared one which is super rank and probably why I have so many.

I still just grab one off the rack and my husband tells me off for using his.

One of the greatest Mumsnet debates!

We are a towel sharing family but it never goes down well on MN Grin

"If you rent you don't pay council tax"...

That's not correct, unless you are a student, a lodger or live in a HMO. Tenants pay council tax if they rent the entire property.

Not in this country you don’t, live overseas, and people who rent don’t pay Council tax.

My husband’s family did this - 3 blokes sharing one towel 😂 he had no idea anyone else did it differently bless him. Now we all have our own towels in our house hehe

GrannyRose15 · 08/08/2023 20:21

What do you mean left over Yorkshires. There are none in my house.😀 I once embarrassed a friend who said it was very strange to set the table for breakfast before going to bed by telling him we always did it when I was growing up.

We used to have a banana with milk and sugar on it for pudding.

Yes! I loved this as a kid.

BCBird · 08/08/2023 20:21

Great thread. Crisp sandwiches- tick. Cold crumble- tuck but must be served with hot custard- not icecream. Always peeled mushrooms. Now wipe with damp kitchen roll. Clean knickers for bed, unless entertaining🤣

natura · 08/08/2023 20:22

Ooh, cultural one – keeping saucepans and frying pans in the OVEN!

I was so confused when I met my DP and found he was using the oven as some kind of mutant cupboard... but turns out, it's a thing where he's from and a lot of people do the same!

Me too! My mum always pulls the stalks off and peels them. I don't know why I thought that was normal when the "stereotypical" drawing of a mushroom to eat would include the stalk.

For me it would be that most people don't heat weetabix in the microwave. We always had it with milk, then microwaved and mixed so it was the consistency of porridge. Didn't realise this was weird.

I heat my weetabix in the microwave - I can’t bear to ‘eat’ ice cold milk and I like the weetabix soft

Limitedisall · 08/08/2023 20:22

The first time I was given apple pie at my in laws house, they passed me a jug of milk. Had no idea what to do with it - we had custard at home. It was for pouring on the pie apparently.

I didn't know that I should expect privacy when having a bath, in my teen years, nor that everyone's dad didn't wander about naked in front of their adolescent children.

But whyyyy please tell me - I’ll never understand it, you rub your nether regions with it 😱🤮

Oh god, we share towels. Never thought it was weird. 🫢

White bread and butter crisp sandwiches. Grew up on these but my husband is horrified my them.

Yeah my husband is too. I bloody love them!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 08/08/2023 20:25

The non towel sharing families - how do you know whose towel is whose? Does everyone have a different assigned colour? Their names on it? Are the 3/4/5/6 big bath towels in the bathroom at the same time?

Gabby10 · 08/08/2023 20:25

My family always have Yorkshire puddings first with mushy peas, gravy and mint sauce. I thought everyone did it until a few years ago and I'm in my 30's 😂

That if you rented a car on holiday my parents would spend at least 2 hours in the car park driving around slowly getting used to it as 'all cars are different'.
The first time I was on holiday with DH and we rented a car and we got in and he just drove off I was Shock and said don't you have to practise in it first?

This made me laugh Grin

Fairy bread Smile

I lived in Australia for a year when I was 4 years old. Fairy bread is one of my memories plus cereal with a Toucan on the packet (possibly Fruit loops). I am obviously food oriented.

My two eldest aunts used to serve hunks of a single giganto Yorkshire pud as a first course, with gravy, because that's what they'd grown up with. It took the edge off people's appetites in a Nottinghamshire family of 10 kids. If I ate that I couldn't eat the main course, so was allowed to save mine for pud, with honey.

We have different towels while we're using them, and they're usually different colours or we remember where we hung them. Not assigned colours per person, but you know which one you've been using and you keep using that until you put it in the wash.

I'd never heard of peeling a mushroom until last year and i'm 45. I just buy a punnet and eat them as they are.

A colleague was aghast that they still had dirt on. So what?!

Aren't mushrooms grown in manure? Why wouldn't you wash/peel them 😱

@Farahpascalmoges My beloved late Bampy would cover a baking tray with grated cheese and onion then roast it, that was one of his favourite meals (No Irish roots, he was full blood Welsh)

That sounds lush.

Applescruffle · 08/08/2023 20:29

You're clean when you get out of the bath though

I thought everyone could always hear their heartbeat. Didn't know it wasn't normal until I was in my mid 20s

Umm... is it not normal? What does it mean? Asking for a friend (me, who can hear her own heartbeat all the time and is now worried...)

Yes, ours were in the warming drawer at the bottom of the oven.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a warming drawer. It was just the pots and pans drawer.

We always ate Yorkshire pudding loaded with gravy before our meal. Like a starter. It's not a huge thing here so didn't really have it anywhere else but at home. Went to a Sunday meal at a hotel, and they they were, on the side of the plate of the main meal. I thought it was just all wrong.

We have them with our meal now. Never have leftovers though.
