Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

Having butter and peanut butter on toast. Totally normal in my family, every time I've done it in front of someone else they've reacted as if I'm eating like late era Elvis.

We do this too.

Having a plate of bread and butter in the middle of the table at EVERY meal. Parents were northerners. I never did it when I got older and left home but I was also surprised that others didn't do it in their houses when I was younger.

We did this! Also Northern. Sometimes I think I should bring it back for my kids tbh.

At children's parties in Australia, it was traditional to serve white bread with the crusts cut off, liberally spread to the edges with butter, and covered in 100s and 1000s. It was one of the things I was most excited about at my kids 5th birthday and not only did nobody eat them, all the parents were absolutely horrified and looked at me like I was a heathen!! Oh well.

Fairy bread! And Devon rolls(what was IN them?) And cold beans and spaghetti sandwiches. 🤮
Roast dinner you got three Yorkshire’s, one scoop of spuds, two roasties. Leftovers with milk and sugar or golden syrup. Carrots cut up in rounds. Big shock when I went to my mates and the plate was literally piled high and you could help yourself to extras. And carrots were in batons!

Is this not normal? We were always told not to wear underwear with nightclothes too and I still don't!!
Do people wear knickers under PJs???

I don’t wear underwear for bed either! For the same reason!!!

I believed until last year (mid 30s) that Scotland Yard was in Scotland.
I always wondered why when they did press conferences they weren't Scottish & seemed to only cover stories that happened in London 🤦‍♀️

Woohoo! Not just me then 😁

BlueThursday · 08/08/2023 20:11

I was always confused as to why the big toe was called that when it wasn’t the biggest; it was the 3rd

it wasn’t till I was 17 I actually noticed that people outside my immediate family had regular toes and the big toe was, indeed, the big toe

Sorry... what?
Cold crumble?
I do not understand lol. Its an autumn/winter desert. Why would it be cold? Did your parents just cook it and then let it go cold?? Whhhyy??

I know, such a travesty! It was my granny who always served it when we went round for Sunday lunch. I guess it must've been hot when she made it but it was always cold when she served it.

bossybloss · 08/08/2023 20:12

Bread and milk as a dessert ! With sugar on . A bit like bread and butter pudding without the butter.

Maireas · 08/08/2023 20:14

We used to have a banana with milk and sugar on it for pudding.

Do people wear underwear in bed? Under jimjams?

SweetPotatoAndPeanutStew · 08/08/2023 20:15

I literally came on to say peeling mushrooms before I read your whole OP Grin. My Mum did it and I thought it was normal. Now I realize it's bonkers

takealettermsjones · 08/08/2023 20:15

I grew up poor and every couple of months the landline would be cut off because of non/late payment, and we would be on incoming calls only. I thought this was just normal and you had to "take turns" so to speak, so everyone gets one month where they can make calls and then the next month they can only take them etc. My friend called me once when our phone line was back on, and I was telling her how annoying it was that our phone schedules lined up and so we would both be on incoming calls only at the same time so we wouldn't be able to ring each other. She was baffled, and then I was baffled to hear she could call people all the time. I don't know how I thought it worked after that but I still didn't realise the truth until much later.

Sooze2023 · 08/08/2023 20:15

Peel mushrooms?? You just dust them off

And butter definitely with peanut butter. Never occurred to me not to always put butter on anything with bread or toast 🤔

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 08/08/2023 20:16

@Clefable thank you for the info. I’m from NI and whilst I heard bellend being mentioned it was not a widely used insult round my way.

Aurora2023 · 08/08/2023 20:16

Also - a pudding after every meal. Pie, cake or trifle, ice cream or tinned fruit with tinned cream (Carnation milk) ! Ah bless my parents. They were so wholesome ❤️

PaperLanterns · 08/08/2023 20:16

That whole families didn’t share towels - my mum had a weird thing about washing them so my sisters and I shared one which is super rank and probably why I have so many.

I still just grab one off the rack and my husband tells me off for using his.

I didn’t know that you didn’t have to stand up to listen to the Queen’s speech on Christmas Day. My dad made us do this every year, and it was only when we got to non-gullible age, we realised that he’d been having us on for years…

HA! Reminds me of a girl I went to uni with, whose parents had told her and her sister that the ice cream van plays music to let you know they've run out of ice creams 😂

Yes! With evaporated milk - it’s still one of my favourite desserts.

That's what we had. Either tinned fruit with carnation, banana with milk and sugar, or sponge pudding with custard.

Maireas · 08/08/2023 20:18

I didn't know until I went to university that not every meal was either deep or shallow fried. You could cook without frying. That was a revelation.

Perfectly normal behaviour. Are you sure you not from my family? Perhaps not, as we put lemon curd in our leftover yorkshires. And yes, have to cook extras just so we have enough leftovers.

grumpycow1 · 08/08/2023 20:19

Leftover Yorkshires just would never ever exist in my house 😂

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 08/08/2023 20:19

Peeling mushrooms? Rinse under the tap, chop and go.

WeWereInParis · 08/08/2023 20:20

Me too! My mum always pulls the stalks off and peels them. I don't know why I thought that was normal when the "stereotypical" drawing of a mushroom to eat would include the stalk.

For me it would be that most people don't heat weetabix in the microwave. We always had it with milk, then microwaved and mixed so it was the consistency of porridge. Didn't realise this was weird.

wingingit1987 · 08/08/2023 20:20

My parents convinced us there was a “birthday bunny”, the same way there is an Easter bunny and santa. My friends were looking at me like I had two heads when I mentioned this.
