Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

Haha that made me laugh!

I thought ball-ache was pronounced bal-ash

So did my colleague - as a result it is now always pronounced ballash 😊

@Applescruffle are you possibly from Yorkshire ( or Lancashire!)

That's what everyone I say this to says... nope!!

I have butter and peanut butter. It's delicious and I didn't know it was weird.

I will have peanut butter on its own if I am trying to be healthy but much prefer it with butter. Jam also must have butter but butter and chocolate spread is wrong wrong wrong.

I'd never heard of peeling a mushroom until last year and i'm 45. I just buy a punnet and eat them as they are.

A colleague was aghast that they still had dirt on. So what?!

WAC1 · 08/08/2023 19:16

Butter and peanut butter is the correct way surely!

UncleRadley · 08/08/2023 19:17

@Applescruffle it was the cold crumble, I'm a native Lancastrian and cold crumble has never passed my lips!

Watchthedoormat · 08/08/2023 19:17

Grew up thinking that on Sundays everyone had salmon sandwiches, sausage rolls, vol-au-vents and trifle for tea.A proper 'Sunday Tea'. Mandatory.
I also believed everyone would eat Yorkshire puddings with treacle after their Sunday dinner.

Switcher · 08/08/2023 19:18

At children's parties in Australia, it was traditional to serve white bread with the crusts cut off, liberally spread to the edges with butter, and covered in 100s and 1000s. It was one of the things I was most excited about at my kids 5th birthday and not only did nobody eat them, all the parents were absolutely horrified and looked at me like I was a heathen!! Oh well.

The peanut butter IS the butter!

I can understand eating it cold as leftovers (although I've never done it) but to actually purposely let it go cold instead of eating it fresh from the oven???
I mean, what do you even eat it with? Cold custard???

Do you mean treacle, or black treacle though? Yorkshires with cream and black treacle are the BOMB

UncleRadley · 08/08/2023 19:22

So mine is mince and pancakes every Saturday. Would actually be interested if this is a thing, or just a thing for my family. Was mince fried with onions, tinned tomatoes and kidney beans (resolutely no spices) and served on a thick pancake.

EmmaEmerald · 08/08/2023 19:22

Spaniel "insurance not compulsory for vehicles and a LOT cheaper for fully comp"

driving without insurance is illegal.

I didn't know anyone peeled mushrooms!

DropCloths · 08/08/2023 19:04

What are "leftover yorkshires"?

@DropCloths yep, not understanding that concept At All?!!

IrisBearded · 08/08/2023 19:24

Peanut butter on toast definitely needs a layer of butter so it's not claggy in your mouth.

I don't have anything more useful to add to the thread though

We would have something similar on pancake day.
I didn't know it wasn't normal to not have savory pancakes for dinner followed by desert pancakes on pancake day. I didn't know that people only have them for desert and that some people only have the sweet ones!!

I had no idea that some people put butter on toast with Nutella, until I bought some Nutella crumpets from a food van at a festival and there was a layer of Lurpak underneath. It was vile and I had to throw them away.

If you know yoh ar having them for desert then you purposefully put them aside or you make extra

We wpuld always have a shit ton. We were poor so it was a cheap desert that didn't require extra effort when you are all full after your roast.

Fairy Bread!

You're not supposed to peel mushrooms. A wipe with a damp cloth, then cook.

I have discovered this now, and if I where to cook them now I would probably not peel as my mum did
But I don't like them and neither does anyone in my house so it doesn't matter any more

I believed until last year (mid 30s) that Scotland Yard was in Scotland.
I always wondered why when they did press conferences they weren't Scottish & seemed to only cover stories that happened in London 🤦‍♀️

Having butter and peanut butter on toast. Totally normal in my family, every time I've done it in front of someone else they've reacted as if I'm eating like late era Elvis.

That is completely normal to me! I wouldn't have peanut butter on toast without butter.

Merapi · 08/08/2023 19:32

We only found out a few months ago that adult DD and I both see very slightly different colour shades with each eye, and although I'd known for decades that I had it, I never knew hers were like it as well. She never thought to mention it to us because she thought everybody's eyes were like that!
