Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

I do remember having a Charles and Diana China mug though, confusing Confused

Mrsweasleysclock · 08/08/2023 19:59

I thought everyone could always hear their heartbeat. Didn't know it wasn't normal until I was in my mid 20s

DoneWithHer · 08/08/2023 20:00

My mother told me and my sister growing up it is important not to wear knickers going to bed to air out your privates, so we would just wear pyjamas, no underwear. Genuinely thought this was as normal as brushing your teeth until a convo came up recently about it and a lot of my friends were horrified! 😅

Cold crumble always! Cook it early in the day and let it go cold. I heat it for people who want it warm but always served cold for me 👌

42coats · 08/08/2023 20:01

@Merapi I have that too! But it's that one eye the colours are more saturated/red and the other is cooler. Not a huge difference though.

Have you ever had an ophthalmologist look at the back of your eye? I have and they said I've unusual speckles that look like the start of cataracts

Moredarkchocolateplease · 08/08/2023 19:16

I'd never heard of peeling a mushroom until last year and i'm 45. I just buy a punnet and eat them as they are.

A colleague was aghast that they still had dirt on. So what?!

Apparently they are grown in manure !

I’ve never eaten the ends of a banana….I was shocked when I watched DH munch his way through the whole thing whilst shouting “noooo the ends are poisonous”

apparently not.

Thanks Nan!

Eew I never eat the ends

Sorry... what?
Cold crumble?
I do not understand lol. Its an autumn/winter desert. Why would it be cold? Did your parents just cook it and then let it go cold?? Whhhyy??

My ex boyfriend's family used to put cold custard on hot crumble and were confused as to why I thought this was weird!

midsomermurderess · 08/08/2023 20:02

‘I thought ball-ache was pronounced bal-ash’. I love this. I might adopt it.

Sandunesandseashells · 08/08/2023 20:02

As children, mum always gave us a slice of bread and butter to eat with ice-cream to counteract the coldness. I’ve never met anyone else who had this.

What are "leftover yorkshires"?

Grin does not scan

@Switcher I discovered that Australian delicacy some years back on an ASMR vid! The lovely gent who made it called it Fairy Bread? Apparently no kids party is complete without it and the adults often love it too.

It’s popular in the Netherlands too.

MumofSpud · 08/08/2023 20:05

That if you rented a car on holiday my parents would spend at least 2 hours in the car park driving around slowly getting used to it as 'all cars are different'.
The first time I was on holiday with DH and we rented a car and we got in and he just drove off I was Shock and said don't you have to practise in it first?

I didn’t know that you didn’t have to stand up to listen to the Queen’s speech on Christmas Day. My dad made us do this every year, and it was only when we got to non-gullible age, we realised that he’d been having us on for years…

Oh my goodness! That's actually quite funny!

Is this not normal? We were always told not to wear underwear with nightclothes too and I still don't!!
Do people wear knickers under PJs???

At children's parties in Australia, it was traditional to serve white bread with the crusts cut off, liberally spread to the edges with butter, and covered in 100s and 1000s. It was one of the things I was most excited about at my kids 5th birthday and not only did nobody eat them, all the parents were absolutely horrified and looked at me like I was a heathen!! Oh well.

Fairy bread, a staple at all my birthday parties as a child.

My mother was Australian.

“Little chef will gladly swap
your empty plate, for our lollipop”

it rhymes, so it MUST be true

Tiredalwaystired · 08/08/2023 20:06

SpeedyMackechnie · 08/08/2023 18:55

I thought that the Little Chef would only give you a lollipop if you cleared your plate.

Didn't realise that this was actually my mum and dad's rule until I was in my mid 30s and half way through telling someone at work about it. As in - Little Chef only gave you a lollipop if you cleared your.... HOLD ON.
Slightly embarrassing 😁

Not read the whole thread but if no one’s answered you, no you’re not being gullible. They used to do TV adverts about this.

Aurora2023 · 08/08/2023 20:06

Having a plate of bread and butter in the middle of the table at EVERY meal. Parents were northerners. I never did it when I got older and left home but I was also surprised that others didn't do it in their houses when I was younger.

dahliadazed · 08/08/2023 20:06

@DoneWithHer , I’ve never worn underwear to bed and neither have my children. Airing is important!

Youdoyoubabe · 08/08/2023 20:07

I thought Colonel was pronounced Col-o-nel

Gullibleme · 08/08/2023 20:08

Changed my name for this one as many of my RL friends and family know this story.

I believed that Easter Eggs only had one side to them. My mum used to eat half and wrap them back up. I was a teen before I knew that I’d been short changed.

Lucy1097 · 08/08/2023 20:08

I think you just taught me something.. hahaha mind blown

Clefable · 08/08/2023 20:08

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 08/08/2023 19:51

Ahem - what is a bellend? I truly wish I didn’t have to ask this.

The head of the penis (so you can imagine why telling someone your son has no bellend would cause alarm!)

Fairy bread, a staple at all my birthday parties as a child.

My mother was Australian.

Still very popular in Netherlands that.

Also sugar sandwiches. Yum.

I believed until last year (mid 30s) that Scotland Yard was in Scotland.
I always wondered why when they did press conferences they weren't Scottish & seemed to only cover stories that happened in London 🤦‍♀️

😂
