The immigrant barge - what’s actually wrong with using it?

Educate me!

I looked at pics from the inside, it all looks very much like standard student accommodation to me, including common rooms/relaxation areas/health support on board. Residents can go on & off the boat, it’s passed fire etc safety and been used to house people in lots of other situations. I don’t understand why people think it’s not ok. Can anyone explain please?

And what are these legal means?

Get a Visa like everyone else.

Get a Visa like everyone else.

If you are fleeing oppression, or your town or village has been bombed or burned down, in eg Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, you are not in a position to get a visa.

The main problem is that the government won’t prioritise sorting out asylum claims. It’s taking 2-3 years. This should be the priority!

It's difficult to process Asylum claims when people don't have any papers.
I suppose they just have to fingerprint them and hope Interpol has a record of them.

midsomermurderess · 08/08/2023 20:39

And in any event, you can’t claim asylum outwith the UK. Also, over 75% of claims for asylum when people do reach the UK are successful, so this lack of identity documents you keep talking about can’t be that much of an obstacle.

bellac11 · "My view is we have a population growth deficient and millions of jobs unfilled, give people asylum status, let them get working"

How many? The traffickers will gratefully pass the word around that everyone is welcome and the flow will never end.

And where will they live? There are not enough homes for british people so we must evict some to make room.

New powers to confiscate privately owned homes and repurpose each one for a dozen illegals perhaps? I'd almost like that to happen to see the looks on the faces of the "let them all in" brigade when they realise it will affect them.

Not everyone wants to come to the UK, the biggesst recipients of migration are the middle east and other countries in the EU, far far bigger numbers of migration to those countries

But to take your point about housing, there is enough housing in the UK for everyone, what there isnt, is enough affordable housing. And that is a purely political decision. And yes, I would be in favour of massive housing aquisition from foreign owners (usually Russian or Chinese) who buy up huge areas of real estate as either money laundering exercises or pure investment, no one is living there. We could house huge numbers of people affordably.

I believe the original route for people who helped us in Afghanistan involved asking the Taliban to sign your papers. I mean FFS.

WalkingThroughTreacle · 08/08/2023 20:43

Jamtartforme · 08/08/2023 20:30

Not the NHS? Or social care? Or education? Or crime and justice? Or our sewage filled waters? Or climate change? Or SEN provision? Or the housing crisis?

It’s all very well saying everything should be ‘priority’ but by definition not all of it can be.

What do we tackle first? Bearing in mind we’ve very little cash to play with.

Maybe we need to tackle the government that is responsible for all those things then. It's not simply that their priorities are different from yours or mine, it's more that they have consistently mismanaged pretty much everything that matters to wider society. As to the matter of there being not enough money to play with, there easily could be. We are a wealthy nation but the government does not want to share that wealth fairly because that would mean taxing high earners, the wealthy and profitable businesses more equitably. It might also require them not to piss money away on woefully mismanaged projects and government contracts.

Exactly. People make it out that it’s so easy for people to apply from outside the country but realistically unless you come from one of a very very small group of countries that option isn’t in place.

we need clear and simple application routes before arriving here if we want to deter people trying difficult routes in.

KTSl1964 · 08/08/2023 20:44

If the migrants are looking for a safety - we won’t be the first safe place they arrive at so why continue on. The French don’t want them and they have nothing invested in stopping them coming here.
I think Rishie is trying to send a message out - don’t take the piss - if you are war torn then you will be glad of a safe space.
The Gov have gone from one extreme to the other. It’s a bloody mess. I’m a bit cynical about it all.
we have had migrants on the news complaining about sharing a room - some have gone to lawyers over the boat - what is the solution - more keep coming - we haven’t enough recourses for our own.
It’s mainly young men that are coming - are they leaving the rest of there family to die back home? It’s hard to know who is genuine and who isn’t.
They destroy passports, lose IDs - Why? They have a room and it’s warm and they are safe from persecution if that’s why they are genuinely here.

Sirzy · 08/08/2023 20:39

And what route do these people have to do so?

Not that long ago, a Conservative MP, asking about the brother of one of his constituents, put the Home Secretary very much on the spot when he asked her this. What are the safe, legal routes. He was being rhetorical. He and the Home Secretary knew only too well that there are none. This was a kid whose family had been murdered in some act of religious/political persecution and the only person he had left was a bother given leave to remain here.

They have been packed in on boats etc getting here, so I'm sure they'll be grateful for any accomodation

They were packed into trains getting to the concentration camps so I’m sure they were grateful for the accommodation when they got there.

Exactly. My personal circumstances mean for me NHS and SEN provision are both top priority, and I know both have been very much mismanaged. But that doesn’t mean I believe those seeking asylum are any less worthy.

We have safe routes from Afghanistan.

The war has stopped in Syria.

Iranian Muslims are Shia and UK Muslims are 95% Sunni. The two groups hate each other. So Iranians wouldn't be doing themselves any favours coming here anyway.

UK would be best advised not to get involved with Sudan because of Russia's involvement there.

Why do you think the UK should be exempt from accepting asylum seekers?

I’m assuming (god forbid) something happened here that people had to flee from, you’d happily stay put and be fine with countries not accepting British asylum seekers?

JenniferBooth · 08/08/2023 20:48

I live nine miles from the Wethersfield air base. Scabies and TB have already been found there. It has been minimized. After all we were put through with fucking Covid, Told we were monsters if we didnt wear masks. That we were granny killers if we dared to visit a relative There are STILL people being taken to court and fined for Covid breaches. How DARE they minimize the risks after all they put us through. How come health is important and then suddenly it isnt. Very telling!!!

PinkFrogss · 08/08/2023 20:50

Funny that the government believed there were more than enough resources for dodgy contracts and unusable PPE.

Pointing out issues with homelessness, the NHS etc is even more reason to be angry about this. The government is failing everyone except themselves.

They risk their lives in a dinghy to claim asylum after leaving a safe country and having crossed many other safe European countries. The UK provides shelter, food, money, medicine, English lessons. £6m a day is apparently being spent on 4 star hotels at the moment.

That's it in a nutshell. Safety is not their priority - they could have that in France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium. But the UK provides so much more and so they dodge less generous countries to come here. Their greed is their downfall if they come to harm.

Some Albanian illegals saw British homeless people sleeping in the streets while they were living in hotels at our expense and were shocked by the situation. Albania is not at war or a dangerous place. Albanians who come here are on the make.

Compare them to Ukranians who really are fleeing a terrifying war zone. They really do need help. Nobody grudges them. Their men stay in Ukraine to fight Putin and at least know that their families are safe here.

You can’t ‘tackle’ a democratically elected government even if you find them repugnant. And we are not wealthy.

@PinkFrogss Why do you think the UK should be exempt from accepting asylum seekers?

I don't have a problem with genuine asylum seekers.

But please don't expect me to believe that 500 fit young men with leather jackets and mobile phones are fleeing for their lives? Pull the other one it's got bells on.

MrsCobbit · 08/08/2023 20:52

They have travelled through at least 15 countries and risked their lives on a small boat - surely the original space of safety is where they should stay with a quota system to redistribute.

Because civil servants are sitting at home on their arses blocking every endeavour to get them working effectively.

Get the F....K back to your offices and do the jobs we, the public, are paying you for!

And DAMNED WELL earn your gold plated pensions the like of which many of us will never see!

Tell me you read the Daily Mail without telling me you read the Daily Mail…
