Are seaside fish and chips the best?

Inspired by the recent post on the price of chips and the holiday season I wondered if people think fish and chips really do taste better by the seaside?

I'm inclined to think they do! 😋

Yes, my local is the bestGrin

I once went to a chip shop in Whitby and asked for one sausage and chips and they said I couldn’t have that, I had to have TWO sausages and chips if I was an adult (which I was). And the bloke was quite rude about it. It put me right off Whitby if I’m honest with you.

We don’t have this rule in landlocked Derbyshire. Grin

(can’t say the chips were that nice either tbh).

In my experience they're either terrible or excellent at the seaside

Yes, that's my experience too. I've had some really awful seaside fish and chips (Scarborough, Clacton and Blackpool, I'm looking at you). The best seaside fish and chips I've ever had were in Lynmouth (Devon).

But fish and chips that stand up well to seaside fish and chips are found in West Yorkshire. West Yorkshire fish and chips are truly great.

Best seaside fish & chips I ever had was in Swanage in Dorset around the mid 1980's and I still remember them. That's how good they were!

Funny I had some in Swanage this week and they were really awful! I was just saying to DH that our village chip shop 1 hour from the coast is much nicer. Controversially, I’d say in general northern fish and chips are better than southern ones! 😜

TakenRoot · 06/08/2023 19:17

4 out of my 6 favourite F&C shops are by the sea.

But not all F&C shops by the sea are good. In fact I would say there are more bad than good.

Not controversial at all! As a northerner that used to live by the coast now living in the south far from the sea good chip shops are one of the things I miss most!

Only if eaten in the car, while listening to the rain hammering down on the car roof.
True taste of the British seaside.
😉😁😁😁

Roselilly36 · 06/08/2023 19:22

Just amazing, the chip shop we like on the coast, the fish is wonderful.

loislovesstewie · 06/08/2023 19:35

Definitely, I live on the Yorkshire Coast and we have some really excellent chippies.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 06/08/2023 19:36

I had the true joy of watching a red faced angry man stomping into the chippy at Great Yarmouth a few weeks ago insisting on a new set of meals because the gulls had eaten his and his families. He really seemed to think it was their fault and he should be compensated. Utter jackass!

Chips at the seaside are a lovely treat and definitely seem to taste better.

Ooh, could you recommend some? I live in Leeds but do trips to the coast, anywhere between Saltburn (I know that's not in Yorkshire) and Hornsea and I'm always looking for new places to try.

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime I'm well versed in 'the gulls' and have seen many a stern notice warning people to watch out for the gulls and also not feed them, so I was surprised when we were watched but not harrassed by some gulls while eating fish and chips in Redcar. Colleague who I was with said 'the gulls are very polite here' to which I replied, 'I know, if we were in Whitby, they'd be on our laps eating off our trays'.

I used to really rate my local chippy, but then I went to Lewis's in Seahouses and it's ruined me forever. They were the best I've ever had and my local's taste really bland now in comparison.

Lewis's is indeed good.
Even better was George's in Belford. Enormous fresh haddock cooked to order, & a large portion of chips. £4.95.
Also sold scampi & old fashioned thongs like spam fritters, pickled eggs etc. He sold up 3 years ago. Lovely man also paid for a Christmas Party for kids & old folk from his own pocket. Much missed & his fish & chips were the best I've ever had.

caringcarer · 06/08/2023 21:30

Yep, absolutely they are.

KathieFerrars · 06/08/2023 21:34

Yes. Best I've had was in New Quay in Wales. The lime crab shack, I think it is called. Had lemon sole. Was gorgeous.

Cowlover89 · 06/08/2023 21:36

Best fish and chips are in whitby 😊

anon2022anon · 06/08/2023 21:43

@BarbaraofSeville we've just been to whiteheads in hornsea today- the chippy in the council estate. Consistently voted best in the area and good portion size.

justasking111 · 06/08/2023 21:47

A friend of ours drinks in a real ale pub alongside is a chippy he asks the chippy to stick his chip portion back in the fat for a further fry session so they're brown and crispy. He then takes the portion back to the pub to enjoy with a pint. He says they are tastier refried

They use veg oil now- so rubbish compared to 30 years ago

upinaballoon · 06/08/2023 22:13

Not if the fish has been taken out of a packet in a freezer, and yes, I have had that happen not so long ago at a well-known seaside town. I buy frozen battered or breaded which is much better than that was! More fool us for not checking better before we ordered.

Elfer13 · 06/08/2023 22:19

Usually yes they are better but not always.
Near home I would say the Fisherman's Bay at Whitley Bay takes some beating, you can sit by the sea and enjoy although it has got expensive recently, £12.50 for fish n chips last time I went.
Having family in the North West the best I have ever had is Yorkshire Fisheries in Blackpool, strange name being in Blackpool I know.
It's not too far from the train station and to buy some, walk down to the front and enjoy with the seagulls is a joy.
You can eat in if you want but to me it's not the same, think I'll drive down this weekend to see the family hmmm.

Not sure I’m overly happy with this.

A good fish and chip shop shouldn’t really get into selling thongs. Not only are you reporting incorrect sales for VAT where sit down meals are concerned, but the website is going to look a mess. What are tourists going to think?

Personally I would separate the panty business and do that through Only Fans or something similar. You will get all sorts of fishy ridicule otherwise.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 06/08/2023 22:34

Most of you have never had orange chips and it shows because if you had you’d be firmly convinced that the best place for fish and chips is in fact the West Midlands Grin

Noizettely · 06/08/2023 22:44

I think less is more.

Like strawberries. In season, British strawberries fill the tastebuds. Just a short season May and June.

Or get strawberries all year round transported in from afar. Like turnips sprayed with a red dye.

Fish and chips when on holiday is more. All year round and I’m it getting it.

Noizettely · 06/08/2023 22:45

Not getting it.
