I just went to a chip shop, and was charged £3.95 for a large portion of chips!

£2.50 small, £3.25 large here, mid Wales. Seems reasonable compared to others.

TakenRoot · 06/08/2023 17:08

£3-70 for a large. Massive portion easily enough for two
£2-50 Medium. More than enough for one.

BoohooWoohoo · 06/08/2023 17:09

£2.85 for a regular but it's massive so you can share and still feel satisfied

Quality of chips varies hugely though. Last Sunday night at around 9.30 we fanced a bag of chips and I nipped out and got one from the only chippy still open, one which we don't normally use. Paid £3.

They we perfectly edible but just tasted like reconstituted potato, dry and bland, straight out of the freezer (which they no doubt were) instead of freshly cut chipped potato, twice fried, etc. Also they came in a little polystyrene box, not wrapped in paper. Very disappointing. 😞

There is definitely an art to the perfect chip shop chip!

Good points!

I’ve been pleasantly surprised AND hugely disappointed over the years recently with various outlets.

It’s great when you get a large portion of fabulous chips. You’ll go back, won’t you?

When you get a miserable, greasy, small portion of all the rubbish bits dumped in polystyrene, are they seriously thinking that’s a good idea? A month ago, £4.80 laughably from “The Happy Plaice”…

It’s time they’re officially regulated with portion sizes such as 250gm-350gm shown on a menu.

If on holiday, ask the locals where to go. The sea front ones are often the rip-off merchants.

If you have a salad and chicken with it you can feed yourselves and the entire town you live in for a week at least.

I eat an entire large portion to myself as I'm normal greedy and haven't moved off the couch for years.

Ladyoftheknight · 06/08/2023 17:33

Around £5 for a large

Ask the locals?
Are you sure?
My local group will give you every single place in town for recommendations, as will a couple I belong to where I know the area well.

Sorry. I should have said I meant real people, not 'social' media.

What a horribly snarky post.

Some portions are massive and far too much for some people, for others it may not be enough and for some it may be just right.

People have different appetites - hardly front page news is it?

There's no need to jump on the PP with sarcasm.

Comedycook · 06/08/2023 18:32

£3.80 suburban London

Pushkinia · 06/08/2023 18:34

£2.80 in Northumberland. Fish is more than £8 (although is pretty large).

Titsywoo · 06/08/2023 18:42

£2.80 for a small

Titsywoo · 06/08/2023 18:42

That's in Surrey

People are quoting size of portion because it relates to how good value / expensive they are for the price.

I do think it good value that my hollow legged teenage son and I (keen on chips and with a big appetite) can share a large chips with a cod each and still have some left over.

cherryassam · 06/08/2023 18:50

Bonfire23 · 06/08/2023 19:16

Should add that's for the standard chip shop

Posh one (double fried in beef dripping) is £2.95 for small, £3.95 for large if you're buying them separately
You can add chips and curry/gravy to anything else for £1.95

Kazzyhoward · 06/08/2023 19:17

£3.00 regular and £3.60 large.

WestOfWestminster · 06/08/2023 19:19

They don't do a large

gogomoto · 06/08/2023 19:20

senua · 06/08/2023 16:54

I don't buy chip-shop chips any more. They are far too expensive for what they are (potato, fried. Nothing more complicated than that).

You know the cost of living crisis? The one where everything has risen? Well so have the price of potatoes. The price per bag is extortionate.

And as for the complications? You try preparing and storing a quarter of ton of freshly chipped potatoes for a Friday night. As for cooking you don’t just chuck them in some oil and hope for the best. If it was that easy all chip shop chips would taste the same and they don’t.

LookingForPurpose · 06/08/2023 19:32

I got salt and Peter chips yesterday for £3.95 in the north west.
