I just went to a chip shop, and was charged £3.95 for a large portion of chips!

£3.50 for a large portion

EarlofShrewsbury · 06/08/2023 16:20

In my local it's £2 small and £3 large.

A large sausage is £1.20 and gravy/curry/peas are £1.10 each.
Fishcake is 80p!

I don't know how much the fish is.

We are literally waiting at the chip shop for our early dinner after a breezy beach afternoon. £4.50 for a large bag, £3.50 for a small bag here.

Bookchildtable · 06/08/2023 16:23

£2.20 Standard.
£3.50 large.
Usually get a large as it serves me and 2 teens.

fitofthegiggles · 06/08/2023 16:25

Anything between £2.50 and £3.50 where we are. It was 12p in the mid-seventies when I was growing up. Difficult to believe now!

bloodyeffinnora · 06/08/2023 16:26

2.20 large, North West

Chasingsquirrels · 06/08/2023 16:28

Just checked their menu
Regular £2.50
Large £3.00

Large would feed 3 or 4 of us, assuming we were having something else as well. Although they aren't consistent with the portion size.

ItsABrandNewDay · 06/08/2023 16:29

£2.20 large in East Yorks 😊

Oblomov23 · 06/08/2023 16:31

Surrey £2.50
Dorset £2.95

sheworemellowyellow · 06/08/2023 16:31

God this thread is making me feel homesick (and hungry) 😭😭😭

ChristmasLightsLover · 06/08/2023 16:34

£4.50 South East.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/08/2023 16:39

£4.50 for large chips and with a minimum £20 spend if you want delivery, although that’s their own delivery which is way faster and better than using Just Eat tbh. It is by far the best around here, and there’s lots as we’re a seaside town, so if we want fish and chips that’s where we go.

If you like I can have a chippy tea tonight so that I can report back on this important research? It will be tough but I will do it in the name of research.

NeverTrustASmilingCat · 06/08/2023 16:47

Quick look at places near us, £3.45 (just chips, no different sizes), £3.50, £4.30, £5.50! (with regular size £4.40). We usually get just one large between 2 adults and 2 kids as they're generally pretty huge from chippies. We're Hertfordshire.

ToughFuss · 06/08/2023 16:50

Our local is £3.90 for a large portion I believe.. life is just dear these days!

justasking111 · 06/08/2023 16:50

I buy a large chips one haddock and a large gravy for both of us. About £12 in North Wales.

fitofthegiggles · 06/08/2023 16:50

Quality of chips varies hugely though. Last Sunday night at around 9.30 we fanced a bag of chips and I nipped out and got one from the only chippy still open, one which we don't normally use. Paid £3.

They we perfectly edible but just tasted like reconstituted potato, dry and bland, straight out of the freezer (which they no doubt were) instead of freshly cut chipped potato, twice fried, etc. Also they came in a little polystyrene box, not wrapped in paper. Very disappointing. 😞

There is definitely an art to the perfect chip shop chip!

Surely you would need to do it more nights than one. At least seven teas from the seven nearest chippies would give a better result to your research.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 06/08/2023 16:53

£2.50 small, £3.50 large. I live in an expensive SE area so am surprised we're coming out cheaper than some on here. 'Small' is still a massive portion though, so would never need large unless I was buying for about 4 people.

senua · 06/08/2023 16:54

I don't buy chip-shop chips any more. They are far too expensive for what they are (potato, fried. Nothing more complicated than that).

upinaballoon · 06/08/2023 16:54

East - £2.20 for smallest portion at local chippy, but it's a big portion, iykwim.

UnfortunateTypo · 06/08/2023 16:58

East Anglia £3.80 for a large portion and that will feed three people. It’s loads!

Whichwhatnow · 06/08/2023 17:00

Just checked our two closest takeaways. One is a really nice fish n chips place with lovely fluffy hand cut chips for £5.70 for a large portion. One is a nasty kebab shop with greasy fries from frozen for £1.49.

Happy to pay the extra for the first place tbh!

Agreed. We can do some half decent ones in the air fryer. Just got back from holiday (E Sussex) and some of the prices generally were a piss take. £4 for an ice-cream? Nah. No wonder the van had its window shut the whole time.

Chips were between £4 and £4.50 for a large portion from what I saw. Worked out if the 4 of us had cod n’ chips each it would cost £46. The mind boggles.

It’s funny the things you remember from years ago but I recall when we moved house in 1985 a portion of chips up the road was 35p - that’s around £1.35 adjusted for inflation!

Whichwhatnow · 06/08/2023 17:04

I should say as well that the large is too big even for two so we'd usually get the small (for 3.80) between us, with cod and mushy peas.
