Would you stop someone stealing in a supermarket

So apprently a teenager stole out of a small supermarket. A member of the public tried to stop this teenager and ended up getting hurt quite badly by the teenager. The teenager got away. There is now a picture of the teenager going round social media.

So I'm wondering is it worth the risk of getting hurt or even killed over stealing.

Also could the person who put up the picture of the teenager get into trouble for doing so ?

I've reported thieves in supermarkets, those usually pulling price tags off or security tags off. Wouldn't confront them directly, very dangerous to do.

TomatoSandwiches · 05/08/2023 14:37

No I wouldn't.

Topseyt123 · 05/08/2023 14:38

I wouldn't personally confront them, no. Dangerous, obviously.

No I wouldn't, I also think with the col crisis you've no idea of that person's circumstances, they could be really desperate and I wouldn't want to be denying them things they actually need. I work with a lot of young people who've stolen. Often because they're homeless and are in desperate need but don't know how to access food banks or would feel embarrassed going to one. Or where their family is in desperate need and they are trying to help parents get by. I figure if someone's stealing to get by then they're in a much worse place in life than I am so who am I to judge.

Begsthequestion · 05/08/2023 14:41

No, I haven't and I wouldn't. I can't think of a good reason why you would.

andsowhattowearr · 05/08/2023 14:41

Why on earth would you?

StillPerplexed · 05/08/2023 14:42

A supermarket? No, they can take the hit. Some loss is factored in. If I'm at my local cornershop, I'd say something to owner.

There was a young woman with a child in the pushchair stopped in Aldi for shoplifting when I was there a few months back and I did feel sorry for both of them. How do you get to that point in life? Then yesterday I saw the security guard in a tesco tackle a local junkie trying to steal a crate of Carling. Apparently he'd tried earlier, and was returning, so the guard hid out of sight of the door waiting for him. I've got a bit less sympathy there.

TheChosenTwo · 05/08/2023 14:43

No, absolutely not. I mind my own business!

Reugny · 05/08/2023 14:44

@Lavender14 loads of theft is to order.

Anyway I listened to this being discussed on the radio the other week and seeing how the shop assistants in my local Co-op act I wouldn't intervene for any chain shop.

If it was one of the independent shops particularly one with an elderly owner if I was on my own I would.

I used to work in a supermarket as a naive teenager. I always used to confront shoplifters. Until one pulled a needle on me and told me they had Hep B. Decided after that it wasn’t worth minimum wage and if the store were that bothered they should get security.

Same here . When they got rid of security. Not my circus plus I don't get paid enough . I'm going home alive .

MaMaMeeAah · 05/08/2023 14:48

No, I would tell a member of staff and let them deal with it

Fruitynutcase · 05/08/2023 14:50

When I worked in retail we had a lot of grazers . People who ate the item as they walked round the shop . I figured they must be desperate or hungry so I turned a blind eye , they were mostly old people and mums who let their kids eat the goods before they got to the checkout. This was last winter when fuel prices rocketed.

They would probably shrug their shoulders.

Those in my local Co-op talk about their shifts in other stores where they do have security guards who stop people stealing a bottles of alcohol and random stuff.

VictoriaVenkman · 05/08/2023 14:50

Total bollocks. All costs are passed right back to the customers. No shareholder takes a hit.

On most cases they will do nothing. I use to write down the time and description and location in-store of the offender for management to look on cctv later . Usually repeat offenders .

Badbudgeter · 05/08/2023 14:54

I’d tell store staff if I saw someone stealing booze/ batteries. I wouldn’t confront personally.

I wouldn’t say anything if I saw someone stealing food/ nappies/ pet food. The person in front of me had artfully arranged their bags in Aldi to cover up the big bag of dog food and other bits balanced on the bottom of the trolley. I didn’t say anything I’m assuming you are in a pretty dark place to risk conviction over £20 worth of shopping.

Exactly if they can get staff to do it they save paying security. Bollocks to that . If you died or was injured confronting a shoplifter you would be a hero for a few weeks then forgotten about .

IkeaMeatballGravy · 05/08/2023 14:56

No way! I work in retail and some shoplifters can get pretty nasty so I now stand back and radio security. I used to try and stop them but I now realise my minimum wage job isn't worth risking my safety for. I certainly wouldn't do it outside of work just to help out some massive company.

Fuck me! I work in a supermarket and we have a HUGE problem with shoplifters that in turn is causing a HUGE problem with our costs. We are being absolutely crippled and there's even a threat of multiple stores having to close because they cannot afford to stay open and pay bills and staff. Shoplifters are criminals. Thieves. Their actions cause price rises for everyone. Shoplifting should not be supported by your sanctimonious pity!😡

Aldi have clicked on to this . You have to place bags on the conveyor belt now . Apparently they have caught customers who have been coming in for years concealing shopping and not paying.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/08/2023 14:59

I don't fancy getting stabbed, have a stacked trolley rammed into me and sending me to the floor with broken bones or them coming to find me after they've had their couple of hours in the legal system to exact revenge. So no, I see nothing, I hear nothing and I step out of the way.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 05/08/2023 14:59

When the supermarket starts paying me as in-store security, then I'll start bothering about shoplifters.

Sort out your security then, and stop buying this bullshit that it's small-scale theft rather than greed and profiteering that drives up prices.
