Would you stop someone stealing in a supermarket

So apprently a teenager stole out of a small supermarket. A member of the public tried to stop this teenager and ended up getting hurt quite badly by the teenager. The teenager got away. There is now a picture of the teenager going round social media.

So I'm wondering is it worth the risk of getting hurt or even killed over stealing.

Also could the person who put up the picture of the teenager get into trouble for doing so ?

I have a bridge to sell the people who believe store price increases are a result of theft and subsequently profit/loss margins Grin

HotPringles · 05/08/2023 16:47

Nope I wouldn’t.

There is the fact it can be risky.
There is also the fact too many of those thefts are due to the CoL.

Do you know how hard it is to get a food bank referral now days?

You can’t just turn up. You actually have to be referred for most of them. What are you supposed to do whilst you wait for that referral?

This^ also some food banks have caps on how often you use them. Our local one can be used 3 times and then you are refused unless you do a budgeting/debt management course along side. Doesn't really address the fact that many, many people now cannot actually make their budgets work even without luxuries and many would be so humiliated by that that they'd stop using the food bank.

No, what other people do when they’re shopping is none of my business. I wouldn’t confront or report it to staff etc if I thought somebody might be stealing, if I’m in a shop I want to get in and get out as quickly as possible not get caught up trying to catch a shoplifter.

AuntieMarys · 05/08/2023 16:54

I report to a member if management

Gilead · 05/08/2023 16:59

A packet of formula is 17 quid. Managing that on benefits is bloody hard, and not everyone can breastfeed.

livethislifetoday · 05/08/2023 16:59

Absolutely not. Potentially dangerous, but also none of your business; the police aren't even interested if it's less than £250 - why would you be?

If you think the losses in most supermarkets will affect prices I think you might be wrong . It will push up prices to the consumer before they cut profits . No share holders no supermarkets .

The poster was saying the supermarket couldn't afford to pay bills and staff. Yet they are obviously able to afford this if they are still making a profit after paying these costs.

There was a young woman with a child in the pushchair stopped in Aldi for shoplifting when I was there a few months back and I did feel sorry for both of them

Thats actually a well known method of shoplifting. Hidden the stuff in the pushchair so it wasn't necessarily someone down on their luck

caringcarer · 05/08/2023 16:23

I saw a lady with a pushchair put a large block of cheese under the cover on the pushchair. She saw I'd seen her too. She just looked down. And walked away quickly. I didn't say anything because I figured she must have been really desperate to do that.

Someone would have to be a particularly nasty person to report someone for stealing basic food items. I think a lot of people are getting desperate with the cost of living.

It's not solely down to that, no, but you seriously think it doesn't have an affect at all?

GnomeDePlume · 05/08/2023 17:30

I once reported that I had seen someone helping themselves to some sort of anchovy dish from a self serve deli counter in Tesco. I wasn't bothered about the stealing so much as the man had stuck his fingers in the bowl and put the fishy delight in his mouth. Bleugh🤢!

DH indicated to a checkout person that she should keep an eye on the person going through self serve in front of us. The customer was doing a kind of trick in front of us where she always had a couple of things in hand but it was the cheapest thing which got scanned and the expensive thing which went in the bag. Checkout person came and stood at the end of the checkout and the customer scanned properly from then on.

In much the same way companies were falling over themselves to reduce the size of their items due to their moral concern and worry for public health, yes.

Theunamedcat · 05/08/2023 17:40

I've reported a couple of times one time I told the staff they had a couple of the worlds worst shoplifters behind me in the toy aisle they really were obvious she called security to catch them outside the shop the second time was in the co-op a man was shouting hello they are literally stealing here? Is everyone just going to let them? The staff did nothing the thief was aggressive saying he hadn't got anything I (stupidly) said your coat is clanking he ran and was headed off from running at me none of the staff seemed to realise they had been robbed the chap who spotted it told the manager if he worked in his shop he would sack them all for being incompetent idiots and said if they become a store of high losses they will be shut down (true there is another co-op nearby bigger and better) they have upped there security 😉

Need to think twice before having children if you can't afford them.

xYerDaSellsAvonx · 05/08/2023 17:46

Absolutely not. I remember the manager at my first ever job nearly being stomped to death because he went after someone that stole a whole shelf of meat and cheese. I once saw an old woman open up a box of washing powder and pour it into a bag. I kept it to myself.

TodayInahurry · 05/08/2023 17:47

Shop lifting/looting has become a multi million disaster. The MD of John Lewis wrote a letter recently. Shops will close and people will have no where local to shop. A lot of it is drug/gang related. Not a good idea to try to stop them you could get stabbed.

Solaire · 05/08/2023 17:49

I saw a guy in the Co-op stealing steaks once, just brazenly stuffing them into a rucksack.
Apparently it happens all the time, the staff know about it but the store doesn’t want to pay for a security guard - I’m not convinced they would do anything anyway.

PrestonandChantelle · 05/08/2023 17:49

I completely agree. After all everyone who has ever claimed benefits have all ended up on them for exactly the same reason. Greed and laziness. No exceptions. 👌😒

PrestonandChantelle · 05/08/2023 17:50

That was in response to MarshmallowFinder

Soupsetscared · 05/08/2023 17:51

Only this week I saw a man in his early 20's in a Tesco express walk out with a large box of Coronas. I informed a member of staff who said it's not worth the hassle of confronting or trying to stop anyone.

QuestionableMouse · 05/08/2023 17:51

No I wouldn't, especially if they were taking basics! I'd rather someone stole than starved.

Circumstances change, sometimes very quickly

Pufflebow · 05/08/2023 17:55

It’s insane that anyone would risk their life to help make sure that a corporation that’s making millions each year in profit, doesn’t lose a tenner.

youre much closer to the person who is stealing than you are to the billionaire profiting off the col crisis.

Ponderingwindow · 05/08/2023 17:58

No

  1. it’s too dangerous
  2. there are specific conditions that need to be met to actually prosecute someone for stealing, just putting something in your pocket isn’t sufficient. You could just be carrying to the till in an unconventional manner.
  3. when I worked retail, we had chronic shoplifters that we were specifically told not to interfere because security was working a larger case
