Would you stop someone stealing in a supermarket

So apprently a teenager stole out of a small supermarket. A member of the public tried to stop this teenager and ended up getting hurt quite badly by the teenager. The teenager got away. There is now a picture of the teenager going round social media.

So I'm wondering is it worth the risk of getting hurt or even killed over stealing.

Also could the person who put up the picture of the teenager get into trouble for doing so ?

@Gilead, not the point, I know, but where is a pack of formula £17?

Sunce I buy it occasionally for a dd, I’ve seen Aptamil at £14+ in my local supermarkets, when on the same shelf unit is Cow and Gate at around £10. Why on earth would anyone be paying more? Do they think ‘more expensive must = better’?

I can’t think they’re much different and C&G is an old and trusted U.K. brand.

When I was in my 20s, I witnessed a crime
At one of the big London train stations. I confronted the their and he ran off. I then had a panic attack in the middle of the night thinking of all the what ifs.

Luxell934 · 05/08/2023 18:31

God no, how would you even stop them? Wrestle them to the floor? Try to convince them to put it back? 😂

Why on earth would someone risk their life for a supermarket?

Crapsummer · 05/08/2023 18:38

Baring in mind this kid/teenager stole but also caused harm to the person that tried to stop him. What would people say about his photo being passed round social media ?

Someone would have to be a particularly nasty person to report someone for stealing basic food items. I think a lot of people are getting desperate with the cost of living.

Yes I agree I thought of the little kid in the pushchair and thought at least she'd have got cheese on toast for tea.

No, they can take the hit. Some loss is factored in.

Total bollocks. All costs are passed right back to the customers. No shareholder takes a hit.

Yes it is factored in as a cost to the business then added in to prices to maintain margins

also the co op are just simply closing down shops with theft problems

Need to think twice before having children if you can't afford them.

Not everyone is in an area where abortion is readily available. Not everyone can afford contraception and for some of us (myself included) hormonal contraception is not an opinion. No birth control is 100% effective. Not everyone is in a position to refuse coerced or forced sex especially in a dv relationship. Not everyone is in the same position financially after having a child than they were when they decided to have a child.

musicforthesoul · 05/08/2023 20:04

Nope, I have no desire to put myself in harms way confronting career criminals or druggies about stealing.

I have 0 sympathy for the teenager in your case having his photo passed around either after assaulting someone badly. It's scummy behaviour and they deserve the cops getting hold of them and other local people knowing they're trouble.

paulhollywoodshairgel · 05/08/2023 20:15

I once witnessed a young mum putting a pack of nappies and 2 canisters of formula in the bottom of her buggy and walk out. I kept my mouth shut. I assumed she needed them & was desperate. I've also seen people steal clothes and alcohol in supermarkets. I was going to say something but security stopped them. I guess it's what you feel comfy with.

benfoldsfivefan · 05/08/2023 20:24

No, I can’t be bothered with the aggro and potential risk. I do, however, and do frequently tell staff about it. It’s scummy behaviour, shoplifting, and I don’t give a shit about the impact of the COL crisis and making excuses for these thieves to get away with what they’re doing. Would you
make excuses for them coming into your home and stealing your belongings?

LuckyLuckyWoman · 05/08/2023 20:26

I work in retail. We do all we can to deter shop lifters but I'm not willing to fight anyone or chase them down the street. Once they are out the door that's it as far as I'm concerned. In my store it seems to be more drugs related :(

LimitIsUp · 05/08/2023 20:27

I'd turn a blind eye

purplecorkheart · 05/08/2023 20:29

No, I am sorry but I am not putting myself at risk of harm when it is not my job.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/08/2023 20:29

I recently saw an older lady putting tins of dog food into her own shopping bag.
I turned a blind eye and thought of the dog
There for the grace of god etc

TheTecknician · 05/08/2023 20:32

Where does the pity party draw the line with shoplifters ? Does there come a point where stealing X is allowed but stealing Y is not ? If we were to take looking the other way to its logical conclusion, the whole world would be on the rob and there would be no High Street retailers left. Goodness knows many communities are already well on the way to this; please let's not accelerate the process.

Having said that, I firmly believe that tackling shoplifting is primarily the responsibility of the retailers, by way of security officers, not shop assistants.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/08/2023 20:34

Went into Aldi this afternoon to get a few bits with my DS1 this afternoon and we had to put out shopping bags on the conveyor belt It's to stop shoplifters putting items in their own bags
This is a new policy, so they must see a lot of shop lifting

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 05/08/2023 20:40

Would you
make excuses for them coming into your home and stealing your belongings?

No, it's Sainsbury/Tesco/Asda responsibility to stop them stealing my stuff, seemingly.

Nasty unnecessary statement.
You obviously have never experienced sudden change. I hope you never do, it’s tough going, and harder knowing there are people making nasty assumptions and judgments.

Its not nasty. It's truthful. Of course sudden change can happen but a lot of people decide to have children without thinking this through. Lives can be ruined by terrible decisions.

Gilead · 05/08/2023 22:40

@marshmallowfinder
Can you provide evidence?

I barely have enough time to have my bags open and ready in my trolley before I have shopping thrown at me as it is, they will have to give me more time if they start doing that.

AvengedQuince · 05/08/2023 23:42

If I have a few items then they go in my backpack, that's not going on the conveyor belt!

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 06/08/2023 00:20

I stood in my local mccolls and basically watched someone walk out with a 4 pack of beer. I walked out behind him and basically said that he was supposed to pay for it, he told me that it was alright because they knew him.
I went back into the shop and spoke to the chap behind the till. I suggested he told the manager and I would be a witness if necessary.
It turned out that the thief was known and had been banned, every other staff member was able to tell the thief to go away, except this chap, so Mr thief only chose when he was in.

EnthENd · 06/08/2023 00:29

If it was busy enough I might call out, but I wouldn't physically intervene. I'm not a cop or security guard.

PS: If I remember rightly, baby milk is commonly stolen by professional thieves to resell.
