Would you stop someone stealing in a supermarket

So apprently a teenager stole out of a small supermarket. A member of the public tried to stop this teenager and ended up getting hurt quite badly by the teenager. The teenager got away. There is now a picture of the teenager going round social media.

So I'm wondering is it worth the risk of getting hurt or even killed over stealing.

Also could the person who put up the picture of the teenager get into trouble for doing so ?

It is a really difficult one to answer. Many years ago my Mum had a temp job in Poundstretcher just before Christmas, a young lad came in and picked up clothing and put it on his little brother but took nothing for himself even though he didn't have a coat either. My Mum walked out when she was given into trouble for it. On the other hand my Step Daughter has been done twice in the last few months for it, she lives in a MQ, her husband has good pay and she receives DLA for her son along with child benefit, she has more than enough money but finds shoplifting a game.

It is the Co-op. It's widespread though across all supermarkets.

Aren't they still turning a profit though? If so they can surely afford to pay staff?

No idea. It's a serious problem though.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 05/08/2023 15:50

Maybe the supermarkets should have kept the tills open and kept the security guards

Shops moaning about shoplifting while installing more self-service tills. Gee, could the two be connected, do you think?

Fuchsiaplant · 05/08/2023 15:53

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain Alot of people were making the. Same point on the show.

I’d tell store staff if I saw someone stealing booze/ batteries. I wouldn’t confront personally.

I wouldn’t say anything if I saw someone stealing food/ nappies/ pet food. The person in front of me had artfully arranged their bags in Aldi to cover up the big bag of dog food and other bits balanced on the bottom of the trolley. I didn’t say anything I’m assuming you are in a pretty dark place to risk conviction over £20 worth of shopping.

Well as long as you don’t mind paying , then that’s fine because all those losses will be passed on to the consumer . Personally I would rather use a food bank rather than steal .

AvengedQuince · 05/08/2023 15:12

Which supermarket chain? Did they not turn a profit last year?

If you think the losses in most supermarkets will affect prices I think you might be wrong . It will push up prices to the consumer before they cut profits . No share holders no supermarkets .

Do you know how hard it is to get a food bank referral now days?

You can’t just turn up. You actually have to be referred for most of them. What are you supposed to do whilst you wait for that referral?

EggOverEasy · 05/08/2023 16:02

Nope. Why would I put myself at risk when the shops can't be bothered to have security?

LakeTiticaca · 05/08/2023 16:04

No because most of them are druggies and are likely to get violent

WellDuh · 05/08/2023 16:07

I work in a shop. We really appreciate people letting us know of shop lifters but please don't try to intervene. I always go back through cctv using customers descriptions/information and report to police. We can quite often get thieves car registrations from cctv!

Someone in my company (but not my store) got stabbed last year trying to stop a thief. He was fine but it so not worth it,

TheCatterall · 05/08/2023 16:08

I wouldn’t intervene physically but I always inform staff or security. I’ve seen a group of organised lads, get large gift bags, opeN them, start pulling all printer cartridges off shelf and then do a runner out the store (cartridge are all in security tagged boxes). I informed staff as I caught on to what they were doing. But staff and security are advised not to follow folks out of the store due to the risk of attack. Some of ours now have to wear body cameras due to being attacked and targeted.

Lapflop · 05/08/2023 16:13

In fairness co op don't have shareholders or stakeholders, well technically the customers are but not sure many actually engage in voting etc- so talk of the stakeholders and profit not as relevant.

I do mind paying more for my shopping. I also mind paying more for my council tax knowing the amount of inefficiency built in. I mind paying NI for a health service that’s on its knees and for a pension I probably won’t get. I mind paying more for energy/ fuel whilst businesses report bumper profits.

Generally I’m just a bit fucked off at being screwed over for money each and every single day. I don’t think that reporting someone for stealing dog food is going to solve all that though. It’ll just make me feel like a vindictive arse.

megletthesecond · 05/08/2023 16:14

I'd possibly tell staff, depends on what was being stolen and who buy.
I would turn a blind eye to kids items, baby milk, essential food etc.

Florissante · 05/08/2023 16:15

Begsthequestion · 05/08/2023 14:41

No, I haven't and I wouldn't. I can't think of a good reason why you would.

Because theft isn't a good reason?

onlynotafan · 05/08/2023 16:17

Nah that's what security is for. And tbh I dislike most security in stores because they are racist, sexist jerks who like to make people like me who have done nothing wrong feel like we have no right to be in their stores. So yeah leave it to them after all it's what they are actually getting paid to do.

LadyKenya · 05/08/2023 16:21

No, I never would. There is no way that I would risk getting hurt for any shops stock.

caringcarer · 05/08/2023 16:23

I saw a lady with a pushchair put a large block of cheese under the cover on the pushchair. She saw I'd seen her too. She just looked down. And walked away quickly. I didn't say anything because I figured she must have been really desperate to do that.

No it isn't. You're paying for others to help themselves, and no, it isn't just people in poverty and on the breadline who steal. It's thieves vs supermarkets and then us lovers on the sidelines.

Lapflop · 05/08/2023 16:28

Losers* not lovers

Ladyoftheknight · 05/08/2023 16:35

I wouldn't stop anyone- no matter the item. If someone was obviously stealing unnecessary items I'd tell a member of staff but I wouldn't shout/run. If someone is stealing necessary items- food, baby items etc I'd turn a blind eye and make sure no one interrupted them.

CornishGem1975 · 05/08/2023 16:35

I would tell the staff, but I wouldn't approach myself.

DojaPhat · 05/08/2023 16:40

@Ladyoftheknight Where on the scale of necessary items would you theoretically place alcohol?
