Would you go back to a time before technology?

If you could push a button would you erase the internet forever?

I love the internet, but I actually would. I think many problems stem from being so connected.

Yes, I'd do it!

PuttingDownRoots · 05/08/2023 14:02

Overall it does more good them harm.

Data packages on mobiles can go though!

Naimee87 · 05/08/2023 14:04

No, because of our intelligence services, think how long it would take to share intelligence etc.

CopperSeahorses · 05/08/2023 14:11

Technology or the internet?

The internet maybe but my little is dependent on technology to survive.

Vallmo47 · 05/08/2023 14:12

Social media? Probably.
Actual useful stuff like google/Wikipedia/online NHS services, going paperless etc. No.

Pucksandwich · 05/08/2023 14:14

Yes absolutely. It has made life more complex and not better for the most part. The only bits of modern technology I’d keep would be medical advances, sanitation and some farming technology. I think instead of all new technology automatically being seen as ‘progress’ and everyone adopting it wholesale, there should be some sort of national committee that decides whether it will actually make our lives better. I think the people who mostly benefit from technology are those who make a packet from selling it to the rest of us

Cascais · 05/08/2023 14:15

No

AuntieMarys · 05/08/2023 14:16

No. Life's much easier

No, but I'd like us to be able to rewind to the very beginning of the creation of the internet with hindsight and preempt some of the bad stuff, legislate to prevent some aspects of how social media works, how much power and influence the big tech companies can exert etc.

notol · 05/08/2023 15:28

Yes I would. And I say that as someone who lives on tech constantly. I think it's broken us, we haven't adapted quickly enough for these lives.

ComtesseDeSpair · 05/08/2023 15:30

No. I can remember life before the Internet. A lot of things were tedious. Internet for the win, I just don’t subscribe to or keep using things which I don’t enjoy.

KnickerlessParsons · 05/08/2023 15:31

Not all technology. I'd like to keep my washing machine for example.
But the internet - yes. I'd ban it in a heartbeat if I ruled the world.

CalistoNoSolo · 05/08/2023 15:32

100% no. Its an incredible repository of information and knowledge. What I would do is though is police it properly and internationally.

HangingOver · 05/08/2023 15:33

No. I adore Wikipedia and Google Maps and G Pay and online payments and forums and WhatsApp.

LakeTiticaca · 05/08/2023 15:33

Yes definitely. We didn't know any different so we managed just fine. I hate what it's done to the human race and especially children.

Bullying, trolling, doxxing, extreme porn available instantly
Bin the whole lot of it!!!

HangingOver · 05/08/2023 15:33

Oh and Audible and Podcasts ❤️

HangingOver · 05/08/2023 15:34

And Google translate!

Fizbosshoes · 05/08/2023 15:36

The Internet is almost a blessing and a curse....but you couldn't eradicate it in isolation because so many other things have changed with it.
I can't even remember how I found out about things or got to them without Google and googlemaps!

I noticed a load of bt telephone directories had been delivered to our work building recently and was completely dumbfounded that they still existed! I can't imagine anyone looking up a number in the phone book!

Same here.

The disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

Fizbosshoes · 05/08/2023 15:38

I'm always reminding my children how much harder it was to research things for homework without the Internet. Go to the library but there might be 3 or 4 relevant books.....but what if someone had borrowed them first....? We had an encyclopedia but obviously only had a limited amount of info on any particular subject

VinEtFromage · 05/08/2023 15:40

Yes, IF we could do it so we didn't know it had existed. It's impossible just not to use it now, but if it had never existed we'd be fine.
