Would you go back to a time before technology?

If you could push a button would you erase the internet forever?

I love the internet, but I actually would. I think many problems stem from being so connected.

well, we could share intelligence quickly on 911 couldn't we?

Sharing the intelligence, and having the intelligence available are too different things

I'd keep the Internet as the reach and impact of access to info, know how, news and technology improves lives. Also the medical technology now available is incredible. Social media can fuck off though!!

No, but I think it needs more careful managing. (Don't ask me how, I don't know).

We haven't yet found a way of balancing the advantages and the disadvantages, which affect mostly children. (I'm talking about mental health issues caused by influencers projecting images of a perfect body).

I love the ease of communication that it gives, but get increasingly frustrated with technology taking over the roles of humans (answering machines that answer every question except the one you want to ask).

How would we have coped during the pandemic if we didn't have the internet? WFH wouldn't have been an option. The sequence for the virus couldn't have been shared round the world so quickly allowing different groups to start working on a vaccine.

We would of manged. Looking back to the 90s things were not as instant people had to wait. Landlines calling after 6pm, putting the phone down just before the 1 hour time. Vodafone free weekends. People used telephone boxes/Genie sim cards. The radio is how people listened to the news. I remember my mum using an A to Z because she had to to get to work... it's not that these didn't work but they required more of your brain to think and they weren't instant. Everything is at the click of our fingers and it now has back fired massively.

The Internet has been around since the late 1950s. For those of you that talk about communication in the field of intelligence, it was being used way before the masses were exposed to it.

My favourite time was in the late 80s/early 90s, when it was widely used by academia for 'useful' things but very few people had access to it at for personal use on a day to day basis.

That's true, the internet is useful depending on the situation, for research it's gold, especially the time saved eg Wikipedia

The internet is very useful, no doubt about that. I like the ease of being able access online banking, shop & book things online etc but I also miss the simplicity of life before most of us became glued to our phones.
We managed without it fine before, but the world has moved on.

I wouldn’t be arsed if most social media platforms like Facebook, Tik Tom & Instagram didn’t exist. I think it would be a good thing.

Having lived apart from my siblings and parents in the US at a time when smartphones and whatsapp were a gleam in someone's eye, and I had babies and small children, no.

FoodFann · 05/08/2023 17:49

YES

JamSandle · 05/08/2023 17:50

No.

I take regular breaks when I need them. But I think going back pre technology wouldn't be very nice.

I am from a “time before the internet” and it was way better. The problem with it is that horrible people can unite and organise in large numbers - paedophiles, animal abusers, terrorists etc. And work used to stay at work. Your dad would come home and that would be it, he’d be home. No constant checking his emails and taking work calls in the middle of a conversation wirh his family.

Wouldn’t go back to a time before toilets / clean water though. In prehistoric times a settled community in an easy location with lots of food and shelter like Cyprus had a life expectancy of age mid thirties.

Florissante · 05/08/2023 20:00

No. I find the Web extremely useful.
