I have just tested positive for covid for the first time EVER…

As the title says, I’ve never tested positive before. I’ve had colds and coughs and felt run down, but that’s what they’ve always been.

I’ve been feeling pretty run down the last couple of days, especially yesterday. The worst symptoms being body aches and a really sore throat.

Tonight I’ve not slept a wink as I’ve been so cold, shivering under my duvet. But I am so hot to touch and my temp was 37.6 degrees, so I decided to just do a test as I had a free box in my cupboard. I didn’t think it would be positive as I’ve been run down before, with all of the covid symptoms, and nothing.

Lo and behold, two very clear lines appeared. I am a bit in shock to be honest and feel pretty 💩. My plan is lots of paracetemol and to just rest.

Has anyone else tested positive recently?

i don't test because because you are infectious before you get symptoms yourself (if you actually get any symptoms that is as many don't)

If you don't know, then you don't know but those who do know they have Covid prefer not to pass it on to others. People are still dying from it.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 05/08/2023 17:20

People are still getting it and becoming really ill. We had someone admitted with covid pneumonitis the other day.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 05/08/2023 17:30

Well I still test (I've got a very vulnerable mum) !
My daughter had it last week for the fourth time 😩the rest of the household have never had it.
It's bizarre how some people appear more susceptible ( daughter has asd so mixed with very few people 🤔)

OP, it's 2023...... you don't need to test and nobody does! We all know now that facemasks are pointless.
If you feel under the weather, just stay at home for a day or two.... like you would with a cold. Making a drama about Covid is a ship that sailed over 2 years ago, for goodness sake!

Well obviously people do test as proven by this thread.

Me and DH tested because we wanted to know for sure if it was covid. Once he knew he had covid DH made the decision not to work until he tested negative even though he felt fine. He works in peoples' houses and didn't want to pass it on to anyone.

Some people do still have consideration for others

Facemasks aren’t pointless. They protect the vulnerable, even more so if both parties wear them. Covid is still killing vulnerable and elderly people. I don’t wear a mask any longer in most situations but would if someone asked me to.

I’ve just had Covid and I’m immunosuppressed and eligible for antiviral meds as I could be very ill if not. How am I going to know if I need to get them if I don’t test? I hate this attitude that everyone has the same risk factor and people are being stupid by taking care of their health and considering others. It’s utterly selfish and ignorant in my view.

I wish whoever I caught Covid from in 2022 had tested. I have Long Covid and it has totally changed my life. I had to give up a job and a hobby that I loved as I'm just not physically capable of it anymore. It also nearly killed my best friend.

It isn't just a cold or a sniffle for many people!

ChiPawPrint · 05/08/2023 17:51

@LeakyTapTap I completely agree with you, for many it is way worse than a cold. For me it felt even worse than when I had flu.

LeakyTapTap · 05/08/2023 18:12

It really is awful, isn't it? I get really fed up of people who dismiss it as "just a sniffle!"

My best friend has been left permanently disabled by it - she now only has one working lung!

Sundance03 · 05/08/2023 18:40

I refuse to test, as literally no one is monitoring covid testing anymore. And there's actually no point, even if you are positive there's no rules to say you or anyone else have to isolate. Nobody is wearing masks and nobody is social distancing....so it's pointless testing. I work in healthcare (nhs) and we have to still go to work now even If covid positive unless you are really rundown sick with temp etc.... Then you phone in sick as you would when you feel unwell normally. Working during the pandemic was awful.....am glad to see the back of it all.

This is wrong - they're guidelines (so you won't get fined or prosecuted) but if you have covid you should stay home for 3 days, unless it is absolutely essential.

If you really must go out, you should avoid crowded areas especially indoors, wear a mask and practice social distancing.

With what looks like (even with ropey UK monitoring) a new wave of a new variant just getting going, at a time wen vaccine coverage for a large part of the population will have waned, it's important advice. Especially as long covid can occur after even the mildest of cases, and has a rate of roughly 10% per infection.

megansmarkle · 05/08/2023 19:15

So? You've had other illness....

PrimalLass · 05/08/2023 19:19

I'm just coming out of the other side of 2 weeks of covid. It has been a stinker. I was still testing positive at day 10.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 05/08/2023 19:20

megansmarkle · 05/08/2023 19:15

So? You've had other illness....

And certain other notifiable diseases also have quarantine/isolation requirements.

All of them should be respected (even though most of the others don't have extensive "long" forms)

PrimalLass · 05/08/2023 19:21

weightymatters73 · 05/08/2023 08:39

Very very few people are testing now...Most still continue their lives, and those that have had it a few times show virtually no symptoms. The clinically vulnerable will be exposed to it in everyday life regardless of what you do.

(Personally I wouldn't go out and about if visibly "ill", COVID or not, as flu and other things are just as deadly to someone vulnerable)

Then they aren't actually ill with it. If you feel as ill as I have the past 2 weeks you want to know why.

Sundance03 · 05/08/2023 19:32

It's basic common sense.... If you feel ill (whether it's covid or not) then don't mix with people... As what (most) people would always do when they were ill. If I had covid/cold like symptoms then of course I wouldn't mix with vulnerable people as same as did pre-pandemic. But you can be positive and feel absolutely fine! Which I can attest to.. as I was positive a good few times when working during pandemic (when we had to test regularly) but had no symptoms....and the same with majority of my colleagues at the time. So if the govt are saying we don't have to test (and I get it's probably a £££ thing) and I bet your arse no one in our shitty govt is testing!!! How on earth are you meant to stop it spreading!!! Does anyone test before going to the supermarket? Getting on the bus? Walking round shopping centres? Healthcare staff (at least where I work) don't test regularly and no longer have to wear masks.

Workhomework · 05/08/2023 20:58

Have it for the third time. DS2 and DH had it a few days before me. We tested as we were due to go on holiday with grandparents. I'm on day 9 and still testing positive, albeit a very light line that's barely there. Felt pretty rubbish with awful headaches and exhausted, but I had a worse cough the first two times. Great start to the holidays. We cancelled the holiday and have rebooked for a few weeks time. DS1 is negative and was both times before when we all had it.

Bellyblueboy · 05/08/2023 21:02

I had cold like symptoms and tested because my nephew is in hospital. Positive test was Tuesday night.

i have notified everyone I have been I contact with and stayed at home for a few days.

this is my third time - and this is by far the mildest. Bit of a temperate - sore throat for a few days and now just exhausted! I am just up - slept most of the day.

hoping it’s gone now. Will test tomorrow

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 05/08/2023 21:03

I tested positive on my birthday in January for the first time ever 😏 Happy birthday to me!

MrsT84 · 05/08/2023 21:08

My husband and I have both had it over the last week. Neither of us have had it before. I only tested because I had flu like symptoms, then lost my sense of smell, and was due to meet up with a friend who had an operation booked later this month. Husband had similar symptoms and tested because his colleague lives with a vulnerable family member. He was still able to work from home. Luckily I am on six week summer holidays with the children so we spent a few days chilling at home.

Us3rnam36 · 06/08/2023 03:54

God I feel so rough 😢 my head feels like it’s going to explode. This is much worse than any cold / cough I’ve had.

You know it's funny on the mask thing. I catch the bus regularly with a man from China and everytime he is on the bus, he wears a mask. Same with other Asians (I'm sorry, I don't know how to word that without it sounding iffy). They've worn masks for decades and it's ingrained in their culture, yet look at the attitude other folk have wearing them, so hard done by, i'm losing my freedoms.

Feel like I’ve got massive brain fog too - another symptom I guess?

OP posts:
Limetreee · 06/08/2023 07:35

Please keep testing covid is still covid and can kill the vulnerable. I had it for the first time in April and felt very unwell. When I went out I wore a mask too as who knows who your stood next to at the supermarket it is the decent thing to do.

RampantIvy · 06/08/2023 08:52

I managed to avoid it until earlier this year. I wasn't very ill. It was just a bad cold, but I had several colds afterwards and had a really dreadful cold over Easter where I lost my sense of smell and taste then developed conjunctivitis. I tested several times and it was negative every time. No-one else caught it from me thank goodness.

I get very few colds so I realise that covid did affect my immune system.

Yes it is one of the symptoms. How is the shivering today?
