I have just tested positive for covid for the first time EVER…

As the title says, I’ve never tested positive before. I’ve had colds and coughs and felt run down, but that’s what they’ve always been.

I’ve been feeling pretty run down the last couple of days, especially yesterday. The worst symptoms being body aches and a really sore throat.

Tonight I’ve not slept a wink as I’ve been so cold, shivering under my duvet. But I am so hot to touch and my temp was 37.6 degrees, so I decided to just do a test as I had a free box in my cupboard. I didn’t think it would be positive as I’ve been run down before, with all of the covid symptoms, and nothing.

Lo and behold, two very clear lines appeared. I am a bit in shock to be honest and feel pretty 💩. My plan is lots of paracetemol and to just rest.

Has anyone else tested positive recently?

New variant doing the rounds

Yes me, for the 3rd time 😩. I had it twice last year in March and August. The first time was the worst, just a constant throat pain, headache, blocked nose, body aches, coughing up crap. The second was a head cold and sore throat. And this time its like a bad head cold, sinuses blocked and sore throat and coughing up crap. Which is why I'm up at this time 😫
Weird thing is that I never get normal colds/flu at all, the rest of the family do but I never catch them. But covid comes and bam I'm the one who gets it and feels crap, strange. I've had it since Tuesday, when my sore throat began and my husband and kids are fine. Hope you feel better soon. Hope we both do.

@Lovehearts82 I'm exactly the same and the explanation for me is autoimmunity.

Not caught anything since I developed Rheumatoid arthritis after a flu vaccine in 2003.

Covid however sends my body nuts ferritin goes through the roof with inflammation levels, RA flares and now I get neurological stuff.
It's a bit of a nightmare.

I'm also trying to protect parents in their 90's so yes super grateful if people around me test, I'd class that as decent behaviour.

I tested positive last week, having never had it before. I've been very lucky, just a couple of days of feeling rough then more like a cold.

We test if we're symptomatic as DD is vulnerable, and had heart surgery six weeks ago. I should have been taking her for her follow-up appointment this week. The hospital were very happy for me to rearrange and not bring covid (still testing positive although no longer particularly symptomatic) to a clinic full of paediatric cardiac patients.

Sushibecomesme · 05/08/2023 11:48

Yes, I had it for the first time recently.

It started with painful muscle aching and sore throat with a fever. That gave way to headache, tiredness and painful tummy cramps. I lost a few pounds as I couldn't eat.

I slept for much for ten days and definitely feel the effects of it still after a couple of months.

Sushibecomesme · 05/08/2023 11:50

I certainly would always test because it's not just a flu. Wouldn't wish it on anyone else.

Beenhereforever1978 · 05/08/2023 11:53

Yup, I'm a week in and still feeling utterly grim 😫

Does your halo glow every day or just on Sundays?

’Decent people’ Hmm

No need for that comment Hmm

I agree, I don’t think there was any need for the judgemental comment in the first place

frazzledasarock · 05/08/2023 12:00

Why post if you don’t test? The posters who did wanted a rise.

my family tests. Who cares why? It means vulnerable people don’t catch the virus from us. And that’s a good thing.

FiftyNotNifty · 05/08/2023 12:02

I test- elderly parents and friends with immuno issues.
Got it again just now, sick of it!!

I tested positive for the first time not long ago. I had been flying long haul, got to the UK, and within 2 days felt flu like symptoms, tired, thirsty and loss of smell and taste. My face also swelled up and my eyes were like small slits and sore and red. I honestly could not put one foot in front of the other and slept a lot but disrupted sleep pattern..

I did test after a few days and after day 14 of feeling utterly worn out, still a positive test (but did read that was possible). I did not go anywhere or see anyone not that I wanted to or have the energy to do so.

I still dont feel 100%.

Chicken pox is contagious before and after the spots come out so that makes no sense.

Or wouldn’t if people didn’t routinely do informal contact tracing after their kids come out in spots “just checking you’ve all had chicken pox as Tim is covered this morning and we saw you last week”. The whole point of the CP example is both viruses are contagious before symptoms appear.

sykadelic · 05/08/2023 15:58

I tested Monday cause I was sick and was going to be in office and didn't want to get my 70 yo coworker ill. It was negative.

Tuesday I left work early because I was brain fogged. I felt terrible. Head colds do that.

Wednesday I drugged up and made it through but wore a mask just in case.

Thursday & Friday worked from home.

Based on the symptoms mentioned in this thread I tested again. Blazing positive. I'm irritated that first one was negative and feel super guilty I exposed people at work & daycare, despite testing.

So now I'm informing people so they know, but also frankly, I feel a little better in that I would normally have shaken a cold by now, and the meds not working... I like knowing the reason.

Looking forward to the next vaccine, hope it is effective, Covid does seem to more prevalent.

Unless you are over whichever age cut off they pick for the autumn campaign, or have an underlying medical condition, or are occupationally qualified, you won't be covered by the autumn programme (yet to be announced, but the JCVI policy decision papers are available on line)

Yes, there's a new variant, yes cases are believed to be substantially in the rise, but no far less testing going on which means the data is unreliable. Which is pretty shit for everyone. Because covid is not necessarily milder (in the acute phase) each time. And every infection has a 10% chance of long covid - and that's something really worth avoiding.

Current guidelines are that if you know you have covid, you should stay at home for 3 days, unless it's absolutely essential you go out - in which case wear a mask and practice social distancing

Hbh17 · 05/08/2023 16:45

OP, it's 2023...... you don't need to test and nobody does! We all know now that facemasks are pointless.
If you feel under the weather, just stay at home for a day or two.... like you would with a cold. Making a drama about Covid is a ship that sailed over 2 years ago, for goodness sake!

If anyone wants to test, that is completely up to them.

I tested regularly because I don't want to give it to my parents who are in their 70s and would get poorly. I also tested so I don't take it into a hospital that I regularly visit.

I think it's irresponsible and selfish to not test and to then pass it onto others intentionally.

RampantIvy · 05/08/2023 16:51

Yes, you don't need to test, but people still do. I did when I had a dental appointment and wanted to check whether my cold was a cold or covid. It is the thoughtful and responsible thing to do.

Why can't people just use their common sense instead of needing to be told by the government that we have to test?

Qbishy · 05/08/2023 16:53

Peony654 · 05/08/2023 07:03

Who tests? Madness

People who have to work with the vulnerable, or who want to visit their relations in an old folks home, just for starters.

Idiot.

Us3rnam36 · 05/08/2023 08:05

Thank you all. I slept a few hours but I suspect I’ll be spending the day in bed. I keep going from shivering cold to sweating.

It’s my birthday towards the end of next week so really hoping I am feeling better by then and I don’t lose my taste or smell 😔 just can’t believe the timing!

I was exactly the same OP. Had several blankets on me and I was shaking. Then I was kicking off all the covers and sweating. You should start to feel a bit better in a day or 2.

Us3rnam36 · 05/08/2023 16:56

to those who have judged me for taking a test, why don’t you just mind your own business. I’ve never had covid before, I live by myself, I felt extremely unwell in the night and I wanted to see if what I had was covid. I don’t see what’s wrong with that.

to everybody else who has been informative / kind - thank you. I felt better earlier but now I’ve come over feeling rough again. Just slept for 2 hours, my throat is so painful and I can feel a headache brewing.

We test. Parents are vulnerable. Ds (17 and otherwise healthy) tested positive early July for the second time. First was in November and he was run down and tired for months after. He was only really getting properly fully over it when it hit him again. He was really bad for about a week but is still having awful sinus bother and nosebleeds.
Dd positive and no symptoms at all. No idea why it seems to hit ds so hard.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

Ooh I had that too, my throat felt like I was swallowing glass. Keep yourself wrapped up and sleep whenever you can. Don't worry if you can't eat as it makes your appetite just disappear.

Regards testing, ignore the people who are saying you shouldn't be, it's your decision and no one else's. I'm also glad I tested and I know I had Covid because if any complications happen in the future, I can tell medical people that I had it so they are aware.

BusinessClass · 05/08/2023 17:15

i don't test because because you are infectious before you get symptoms yourself (if you actually get any symptoms that is as many don't)
