I will be applying for this.
How long does the process take so I have time to buy a new car
Do you get the £2k plus the actual scrappage value of your car which in my case would be about £500?
Thanks

Ulez scrappage scheme extended to all Londoners

Sadiq Khan's decision comes after the Labour Party's by-election loss in Uxbridge last month.

I'm surprised this isn't a hot topic as the ulez effect on the Uxbridge by-election seems to be dictating our governments policies at the moment.

I believe there’s been £50m allocated to this extension, first come first served and can’t apply until 21st August.

Yes its £2k plus scrapage amount.

I do wonder how popular it will be.

ThisGirlCantAlways · 04/08/2023 12:43

I think they aim for get back to you within 10days from application, not sure if that’s working days or standard days… either way the ULEZ introduction will be past.

Then you have a month to claim.

Yes, you get whatever the scrap yard wants to pay you for the scrap value of the car, then when you have the proof of scrappage TfL pay you your £2000 grant.

From the TfL website:

”Applicants who are successfully approved and scrap their vehicle within the specified timeframe, may also be eligible for a separate, additional payment from the ATF for its scrap value. This additional payment from the ATF is unrelated to the grant payment received from TfL.”

Do you think it will be oversubscribed and not everyone will get it?

50m divided by £2000 = 25,000 people.

No idea… not sure how positive response has been to the initial £110m scheme?

ThisGirlCantAlways · 04/08/2023 13:18

50m divided by £2000 = 25,000 people.

Not sure if this additional amount includes the increased amounts for vans, charities etc

RagzRebooted · 04/08/2023 13:23

I assuming you can't actually buy a ULEZ compliant car for £2.5k?

Probably not but my car is probably only worth the 500 scrappage value so getting another 2k on top is too good to refuse for a 15 year old car

OP posts:
inbetweeners · 04/08/2023 14:34

Not looked into it, but do you get up to £2k only if you show that it's been to the scrap yard? Or do you just get £2k and then it's up to you if you scrap it or sell it (depends on the car obvs)?

Cookerhood · 04/08/2023 14:37

You have to scrap it

MerryMarigold · 04/08/2023 14:38

Yeah we have a 2013 diesel Touran which is not Ulez compliant. It's not really scrap though, it's a decent car! You just can't drive it within the Ulez. I suppose they think you can sell it somewhere (for not very much) and then buy another car?

VacMann · 04/08/2023 14:48

@MerryMarigold Depending on how much you use your car, you could hold onto it and take the hit of the occasional £12.50.
That's what I was going to do before the scrappage scheme was extended.
I think short local journeys will be ok if you can avoid the major junctions where the cameras will be.

Gosh how wasteful paying people to destroy perfectly good cars in favour of new ones. People are going to look back in horror.

IhaveanewTVnow · 04/08/2023 14:52

I have a 13 plate. It’s worth more than the £2k. I will just pay the charge when required which isn’t often. I honestly don’t know how they think the average person will be able to afford a suitable car going forward. Same argument regarding electric cars …..I will never be able to afford one.

Rollercoaster1920 · 04/08/2023 14:56

I applied on Monday. Was approved on Wednesday. Now need to take to a scrapyard and get the disposal certificate. Payment is then by cheque. Scrappage place won't give me any money for my vehicle, but it's worth less than the TFL scrappage amount.

Crazy use of tax income though.

Araminta1003 · 04/08/2023 16:08

They should only hand out the 2000 contingent on people proving that they purchase a car with it! Otherwise give everyone 2000 towards the 11.50 charge.

It will be a scandal if some people just make 2000 out of a car they barely used.

Araminta1003 · 04/08/2023 16:09

Cars worth more should be sold outside London. Major should have done a deal with places like “we buy any car.com” - they are listed so hopefully no dodgy deals.

Of course, totally. But is it OK to do this, i.e. you don't have to 'scrap the car, an exchange by buying new would also be accepted (need to look into it)?

Araminta1003 · 04/08/2023 16:13

@MerryMarigold - good second hand cars are still going for good prices outside the ULEZ zone due to global supply chain issues. So just sell it outside London or pay the charge.

I'm pretty that my car is worth less than £2,500 (it's over 18 years old) and when I checked recently I was surprised to find it was ULEZ compliant

I'll have to try and sell it in London when I come to replace it!

I have an electric and am all for any idea that reduces carbon emissions but indeed this is madness.
for proper old gas guzzlers yeah
for a 7/8 year old car? Nah

So you don’t technically have to buy a new car with it?
I assumed it was a discount off a new car.

SgtBilko · 04/08/2023 17:41

You have to take the car to a specific garage to get the paperwork to claim for the £2,000. I didn’t get the scrappage costs, if I remember correctly, because you are giving the car over to the government, effectively, but they may have changed that by now. The car has to be in good working condition. You apply online first and they give you options of garages in the scheme.
