What's the worst musical you have ever been to?

I love musicals, and DS2 who has autism is obsessed so we go to as many as we can. We've seen Cats (not the film!) 7 times, JCSS 7 times, Blood Brothers, Les Mis, Evita, Chicago , Cabaret..and many others. (JCSS is my personal favourite)

Today we went to We Will Rock You.
OMG.
It was cringingly awful. Even if you love Queen, it was still so bad. Worst 'plot' and dialogue ever, the choreography was...interesting and it was played for cheap laughs and smutty out dated jokes, headed by Ben Elton who cannot..and should not..sing.
Never again!!!

I haven't seen that many but the Bob Dylan west end one didn't work for me. Plot was messy and too many characters plus his songs really don't work well in perfectly honed musical theatre voices, excellent though the singers were. I found it naff.

Worst ever was a one called Urinetown. I like seeing something different and the set was great but we left at half time.

I loved Urinetown! The point of it would be lost if you missed the second half though. I did see one production of it which was gratuitously violent though.

I didn’t enjoy Les Mis which is odd because I liked the film. 42nd Street was so boring. Wicked is really hit and miss depending on Elphaba. A Strange Loop left me feeling odd but most people seemed to love it.

I do enjoy most musicals. I love Hamilton, Phantom and Light at the Piazza. 9 to 5 and Pride and Prejudice Sort Of get a special mention for being hilarious and really feel good.

Oh not that keen on Cats

Somanycats · 03/08/2023 23:09

Wicked or Six. I also saw a strange hobbit/lord of the rings musical one which was pretty bad.

Medusaismyhero · 03/08/2023 23:09

@mcmooberry no, we're going on Wednesday!

mumofteenss · 03/08/2023 23:09

Bat out of hell. Loved the songs and the atmosphere, but my word they reached hard for that story, its dire.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/08/2023 23:10

Phantom - I felt like I was the only person in the theatre who wasn't memorized by it.

Davros · 03/08/2023 23:10

About 25 years ago, Sunset Boulevard (Lloyd-Webber), we left in the interval.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was quite good.
Loved Kinky Boots.

nopuppiesallowed · 03/08/2023 23:10

We've just seen 2 musicals in 2 days (wedding anniversary celebrations). Thoroughly recommend Tina Turner - stupendous singing and dancing (though the abuse scenes weren't believable). And Guys and Dolls at the Bridge theatre was completely amazing. I'd go to both again in a heartbeat!

Davros · 03/08/2023 23:11

I forgot to mention Tony Blair, The Rock musical. Bloody brilliant. It's on tour now

Fiddlersgreen · 03/08/2023 23:11

Oh no we’ve just booked this :-/

Merryoldgoat · 03/08/2023 23:12

Cats. Wish I’d left at the interval.

X-Factor the Musical was wonderfully bad but still better than Cats.

I saw a production of Grease in the West End last year and it was dreadful! Half the story had been cut out and it didn’t make sense at all.

Ive decided I’m not a fan of musicals.

I thought it was shite but I felt like a 13/14 year old again when Jason Donovan came out to do his one song!!! That's the only reason I didn't list it here Blush

Tickyandtackyandjackiethebackie · 03/08/2023 23:12

I really hated Wicked! Looking forward to watching 6 though 🤞

Plankingplanks · 03/08/2023 23:13

jenbj · 03/08/2023 21:53

Wicked. I hated it. Absolute drivel. Everyone else seems to love it....

Me too. And I got the understudy who managed to murder all the songs.

greyhairnomore · 03/08/2023 23:14

Book of Mormon - I wasn't offended, just not funny.

Mrsjayy · 03/08/2023 23:14

Rock of ages is pretty dire I've only seen the film I can't imagine paying to see such drivel in the theatre.

WGACA · 03/08/2023 23:15

9 to 5 is about the worst thing I have ever seen! It was horrendous from start to finish.

Cats has no storyline and neither does Wicked really. I like the songs in Wicked. Strictly Ballroom is a waste of time and money.

Hamilton, Les Mis, Blood Brothers, Lion King, Matilda, Chicago are all awesome. Mamma Mia was ok. I liked Annie, especially as a child.

Others I haven’t seen or they’re unmemorable.

unfor · 03/08/2023 23:15

I loved parts of Book of Mormon (the Mormon bits) but I thought the stuff around Africa was really dated and cringey so I could never watch it again despite all the great songs and really fully bits.

AMessageToYouRuby · 03/08/2023 23:16

@MyLordWizardKing zardKing Lloyd Webber has a lot to answer for! I saw both Stephen Ward & Love Never Dies.

Actually enjoyed Viva Forever but was pretty pissed even before the curtain went up so that might have had something to do with it.

@Davros Sunset Boulevard is back this year! I'm considering booking it for Christmas, maybe not any more.

WGACA · 03/08/2023 23:16

Also absolutely hate Joseph and his amazing technicolour dream-coat!!!

Bellavida99 · 03/08/2023 23:18

I hated Wicked. Others like Pretty woman I haven’t exactly raved about but we’re ok. But Wicked was such rubbish. Too long too boring and pretty offensive suggesting if that girl tried hard enough she wouldn’t need her wheelchair

Highdaysandholidays1 · 03/08/2023 22:55

No-one has mentioned this one* *yet, but the first round of Mamma Mia in London. It was so shoddy, rubbish costumes, the songs just fell flat. Lots of people left although we stuck it out as the seats were free to us! It closed shortly after and then reopened as THE Mamma Mia and everyone went crazy for it. The plot is still shit though!

Completely agree. It was awful. Felt like all they were trying to do was link all the songs together by a really poor script.

Missmarplesknittingbuddy · 03/08/2023 23:21

Another vote for Cats . Completely pointless and plotless.
