What's the worst musical you have ever been to?

I love musicals, and DS2 who has autism is obsessed so we go to as many as we can. We've seen Cats (not the film!) 7 times, JCSS 7 times, Blood Brothers, Les Mis, Evita, Chicago , Cabaret..and many others. (JCSS is my personal favourite)

Today we went to We Will Rock You.
OMG.
It was cringingly awful. Even if you love Queen, it was still so bad. Worst 'plot' and dialogue ever, the choreography was...interesting and it was played for cheap laughs and smutty out dated jokes, headed by Ben Elton who cannot..and should not..sing.
Never again!!!

Book of Mormon - load of "trying really hard to offend" nonsense
DH and I left during the interval

StarbucksSmarterSister · 04/08/2023 14:54

Blood Brothers. I took a client's wife as my boss's wife ( who had booked it) wasn't well. I was desperate to leave at the interval. She told me later she had felt the same but was too polite to say so!

Absolutely awful.

I think Craig needs to stick with choreography - his direction of Strictly Ballroom was dire and interesting that he was involved in this too.

I nearly bought tickets for this so glad I didn't.

@DesdamonasHandkerchief
You just reminded me of another show I didn't like:
Come From Away
Great storyline/idea but I just didn't enjoy the songs/actors

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 04/08/2023 15:20

Come From Away seems to have finished in the West End but I will be watching it on Apple TV, although if Hamilton is anything to go by it's just not the same experience on the small screen.

I just treated a friend to an Operation Mincemeat ticket for her birthday next month. My treat really!

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 04/08/2023 15:25

Oh and another couple of musicals I didn't hate but wouldn't seek out again - Waitress & Everybody's Talking About Jamie.

Totally agree with the comments about the recent Joseph production, Sheridan Smith was hamming it up big time and the children playing adult roles meant a lot of the humour in those songs was lost - felt like a penny pinching decision to me, I'm sure the children are a lot cheaper than adults in the same roles.

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2023 15:53

HAMILTON is touring end of the year into 2024 if any of the non haters 😉 want to see it.

40andlovelife · 04/08/2023 15:55

Rock of ages was so poor

Rock of ages was so poor

It really Is terrible !

Batalax · 04/08/2023 16:15

I loved rock of ages. I’ve seen it twice. But it was better with one Stacey jax than the other.

Not booking the show that I'm interested in for the tour yet (for availability of cheap babysitting since the grandparents live in that city). May have to go back down to that London for a fix before then.

amylou8 · 04/08/2023 16:34

Only fools and horses. We were gifted tickets in the gallery, which turned out to be benches. We had to buy MIL another ticket as she couldn't climb the stairs let alone perch on a bench. I ended up hiding in the toilet for half of it just to give my back a break. I'm not a fan anyway and it really was the dullest musical.

drunkpeacock · 04/08/2023 16:39

I went to see Bugsy Malone recently.
Instead of the all-child cast I was expecting they had a mixture of you gosh children, teens and adults. It was confusing to say the least and the scene where Tallulah (played by an adult) hits on Bugsy (one of the youngest cast members) I found quite uncomfortable.

The family members I was with absolutely loved It though.

EvenlyDetermined · 04/08/2023 17:09

Last time I saw Bugsy all the maim characters were children but the ensemble were all young adults, it worked well because the adults could do much more complex dance routines but didn't take over the show.

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 04/08/2023 17:29

I like the films of Lion King and Matilda but the shows were so disappointing. DD (aged about 7/8) fell asleep in both. I've never fancied Wicked, nothing appealing about it at all.
Saw Hamilton a couple of days ago - never fancied it in the slightest but was completely blown away, I thought it was incredible.

unicornhair · 04/08/2023 17:33

Carousel with Darren Day.

I sat next to an American girl who really did not get The Producers and thought it was pro Nazi and was VERY upset. Made it more enjoyable for me!

bigbadbarry · 04/08/2023 17:39

Bat out of hell. Great songs, awful choreography that looked like a school performance, completely incomprehensible storyline

DrMadelineMaxwell · 04/08/2023 18:08

@buzz91 We didnt have Burke but instead someone who put on a liverpudlian accent to appeal to the crowds at the liverpool empire.
I'd forgotten about then ditching the person who played Joseph's dad and having the female narrator don a fake beard to pretend to be him.

I won't be going to watch it again until it is changed etc again.

LunaNorth · 04/08/2023 19:05

I was forced to sit through a regional touring production of Grease, starring an ageing Shane Richie as Danny. He was visibly counting as he walked his way through the dance routines. It was awful.

I sat through The Producers absolutely stone-faced, surrounded by middle-aged men weeping with laughter. Did nothing for me whatsoever.

Love Book of Mormon, enjoyed Hamilton, loved Hairspray. Saw Martine McCutcheon, Jonathan Pryce and Dennis Waterman in My Fair Lady and it was excellent. Wicked was ok, but screechy.

Les Mis is my favourite, I think.

unfor · 04/08/2023 14:42

@CantFindTheBeat Spot on about Book of Mormon, I wish they would do a rewrite as there are so many brilliant things about it, but the depiction of "Africa" is mortifying.

Totally agree, @unfor - the music, acting and dancing is superb, and the multi-layered jokes about some things are great.

The racism, child abuse, FGM flippancy etc - not so much.

vestedinterests · 04/08/2023 19:47

Frozen

BeautifulWar · 04/08/2023 20:07

Oh, I'm with you on We Will Rock You! I saw it years ago at The Dominion and even though the cast were hugely talented, the 'story' is just appalling.

Our House was also pretty terrible. I didn't really expect any different but went to keep a friend company!

JudgeJ · 04/08/2023 20:11

I'm not a musicals fan, except the original West Side Story not the recent abomination, but I get to sit through some at family houses. The Greatest Showman was as good as a couple of sleeping pills, as was Hamilton and Les Miserables.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 04/08/2023 09:40

I saw Oklahoma! last week and there's a heavy metal segment (feedback and all) at one point and I could see some poor chap trying to adjust his hearing aid. Must have been purgatory for him!

Now that might actually tempt me to go and see it.....

LucyGru · 04/08/2023 20:17

Gobsmacked that anyone could hate The Lion King. What didn't you like? It was magnificent!
