What's the worst musical you have ever been to?

I love musicals, and DS2 who has autism is obsessed so we go to as many as we can. We've seen Cats (not the film!) 7 times, JCSS 7 times, Blood Brothers, Les Mis, Evita, Chicago , Cabaret..and many others. (JCSS is my personal favourite)

Today we went to We Will Rock You.
OMG.
It was cringingly awful. Even if you love Queen, it was still so bad. Worst 'plot' and dialogue ever, the choreography was...interesting and it was played for cheap laughs and smutty out dated jokes, headed by Ben Elton who cannot..and should not..sing.
Never again!!!

Genuine question but did you just not hear of it beforehand, or do a tiny bit of research?

It’s meant to be offensive. That’s its sthick. The writers (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) are known for creating offensive things for the reaction- South Park, Team America. etc.

To answer the question- Jerry Springer The Musical. It was boring, badly written, and songs were shite.

Although the Jerry Springer musical was crap, I do very much want 'I just wanna fucking dance' played at my funeral

BansheeofInisherin · 04/08/2023 05:47

Pretty Woman. Oh, it was dire. Terrible singing and acting all delivered in an arch. knowing way. That plot does not age well anyway and is not in the least bit romantic ( yes I knew that before going but thought they might update)

Surprised by the hate for The Lion King. That's one of my faves.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 04/08/2023 06:01

I agreed WWRY was shite, but the worst musical I’ve ever seen was Wicked I just don’t get the hype, there is basically just one tune throughout, we were so disappointed.

Rent. Left very confused. Still love a couple of the songs but the whole production I didn’t get.

Also White Christmas feels very dated now!

Really enjoyed the producers which I wasn’t expecting!

Sister Act with Alexandra Burke. We went with the expectation of hearing the songs from the film with Whoopi Goldberg. It was all original music. No 'My God' or 'Hail Holy Queen'. The cast were trying to get people up dancing for the last song and failing miserably. We went to see Dirty Dancing and really enjoyed it but have to agree with earlier comments about hen parties spoiling it. There was a group of women with cock shaped flashing deely-boppers and pink tinsel screaming at the actors and responding to every fucking line that was said. It was beyond tedious. It must be so hard to deal with that as a cast member.

Sister Act is my favourite but I’ve never seen the film. I play in pit orchestras for local productions and it was great to play and I’ve been to see it twice since and have the soundtrack on loop. I can see why it might be disappointing if that’s not what you’re expecting. But it is great in its own right.

42nd street was also a greats show to play but not one Id race to watch

thatsn0tmyname · 04/08/2023 06:11

Cats. If you saw the first half you didn't need to stay for the second.

LoudSnoringDog · 04/08/2023 06:11

Dirty dancing

love love Wicked though. And Waitress

Bellavida99 · 04/08/2023 06:12

Oh yes Come from Away was wonderful. Just goes to show you don’t need fancy sets, fancy costumes or huge casts to make an amazing show

christmastreefarm · 04/08/2023 06:16

@Medusaismyhero

Hamilton is in Disney plus I think. He could watch on there. I started watching it and was bored after 20 minutes.

MerelyPlaying · 04/08/2023 06:19

I love musicals, and have seen several more than once, although mostly I prefer the classic old-style ones. Recently turned down an invitation to see ‘Six’ and it sounds as if that was a good decision!

‘Bat out of Hell’ - never again, the story isn’t explained, luckily it was a singalong which redeemed it.

Book of Mormon - great acting and singing, and yeah I get that it’s meant to be offensive, I’m a fan of South Park and Avenue Q, but it wasn’t even funny. I felt it was racist and misogynistic.

anormalperson · 04/08/2023 06:21

Wicked. I fell asleep

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 04/08/2023 06:33

@Bsmirched someone turned Carrie into a musical?
OMG! Does Steven King know? Oh man I would love to see that so badly. Was it hilariously awful? Please please tell me more.
was Carrie at a full climax of a song, arms outstretched as the blood rains down?
Was there dancing too?

Im actually sat here giggling at the thought of it.

Ohyoudodoyou · 04/08/2023 06:45

Walked out at the interval of 'We will rock you' aghast that we'd been so stupid to pay to see it.
Billy Elliott - cringey.
Hamilton - humourless and so boring.
Another Ben Elton one - Sailing I think it was called, Rod Stewart songs. Crude, awful.
The worst was a Billy Joel musical - the poor young cast, er met them afterwards bless. I think they knew. It closed pretty soon after I recall.
No more musicals for me, but currently everything is a musical!
Brokeback mountain? Make them singing cowboys.
Rebecca? Make the 2nd Mrs DeWinter sing for her supper.

Wicked. I hated it. Absolute drivel. Everyone else seems to love it....

I thought it was incoherent, under-written nonsense with two good songs, and the rest sort of sub-high school drama with a green-faced heroine. Equally baffled as to its popularity.

Quietvoiceplease · 04/08/2023 07:08

I live in London and love the theatre, though musicals not often my first choice of show. I’d actively avoid the We Will Rock You type shows as they seem just, well, commercial excuses for shows and (sorry) naff.
Worst musicals I’ve seen are probably the current production of Oklahoma (oh my days what was going on?) and Caroline, or Change a few years ago. Les Mis was underwhelming.
On the positive side Standing at the Sky’s Edge is utterly amazing, and so worth seeing when it opens for a longer run in February. I also really enjoyed Sylvia, about the suffragette, at the Old Vic - which def had a nod to Hamilton.

Flittingcandlewick · 04/08/2023 07:14

Also hated we will rock you

And aspects of love...just bad

mildlydispeptic · 04/08/2023 07:14

I know this is a "worst of" rather than "best of" list, but I've heard great things about Groundhog Day.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/08/2023 07:21

Everyone’s talking about Jamie - just awful.
Give me Buddy any day.

FoggyDay58 · 04/08/2023 07:22

Urine Town. With hindsight, the clue was in the name.

Ladysaurus · 04/08/2023 07:23

A touring production of hairspray about 8-9 years ago. Hairspray is good but they delivered a hack job of pitchy singing, trodden on toes during dance numbers and forgotten lines. And Edna's dress didn't zip up for most of the show.

TheFireflies · 04/08/2023 07:24

The storyline in The Addams Family is atrocious. The characters are so off kilter, it’s only them by name in order to sell a musical with a plot so weak as to be virtually non existent, and absolutely ridiculous behaviour of the cbaracters throughout.

I also hated Miss Saigon. The songs sound lovely but the racism and American hero worship left a bad taste.

Daveismyhero · 04/08/2023 07:25

Legally Blonde. Live the film, the musical misses to whole moral of the story that she doesn't need a man to achieve her goals. Musical has her failing until the man steps in and help her. Totally defeats the point of the whole thing

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2023 07:34

Glockamorra · 04/08/2023 07:06

I thought it was incoherent, under-written nonsense with two good songs, and the rest sort of sub-high school drama with a green-faced heroine. Equally baffled as to its popularity.

I actually can't remember the story, a pp mentioned ruby slippers helping someone the green lady I assume to walk, I just drew a blank, I remember defying gravity and a giant bubble!

partystress · 04/08/2023 07:34

I knew it was about bullying, that was all. I love dark humour. I’ve lost people to suicide, and I still enjoyed Dear Evan Hanson. What I didn’t enjoy in Heathers was, to pick one plot line, a double murder becoming something joyful because it was taken as suicide and converted a pair of homophobic dads. I couldn’t see the hysterically funny side of the fat girl ending up in a wheelchair when her suicide jump failed.

LutherRalph1 · 04/08/2023 07:35

Charlie and the chocolate factory
Overly noisy and too many flashing lights
