Man on TV just pronounced it like shrew the rodent.

Isn't it said Shrowsbury?

sh-rose-bury

AdoptedBumpkin · 03/08/2023 20:21

I've always said 'Shroosbury' but I'm not from those parts. I guess just because of the spelling.

pumpkin1212 · 03/08/2023 20:21

It's Shrew

I says Shrow

Buts it's Shrew I live about 20 miles away

PowerToTheGnomes · 03/08/2023 20:22

Shoes-bury

peekaboo1986 · 03/08/2023 20:23

It is Shrew as in Shrews bury, I live there

MouseKeys · 03/08/2023 20:23

Yep, I'm with @PowerToTheGnomes , shoes-bury. My grandmother's family are from Church Stretton just down the road and that's how we've always said it.

WhatCameFirstTheChickenOrTheDickhead · 03/08/2023 20:24

I'm not from near there but would pronounce it the same as Shrew 'Shroo' because that's how it's spelt?

ShrOWsbury would make me sound like I was putting a posh accent on.

ConnieTucker · 03/08/2023 20:25

I always thought it was shrosebury

TokyoSushi · 03/08/2023 20:26

Shrew

People that say Shrow are simply wrong! Grin

GeorgeSpeaks · 03/08/2023 20:27

@WhatCameFirstTheChickenOrTheDickhead but by that logic Norwich and Worcester are ridiculous!
@peekaboo1986 I will go with your pronunciation. Have you heard of people calling in SHROWSbury? Am I just posh?

SauvignonBlanche · 03/08/2023 20:28

Shrews berry for those that live nearby

StarbucksSmarterSister · 03/08/2023 20:28

Where I grew up (Shropshire/Staffordshire borders) I was told Shrosebury was the posh pronunciation. No idea how true that is but I believe either is correct so pronounce it how you wish.

StillWantingADog · 03/08/2023 20:29

I’m from not far away and it’s Shroo/Shrew

but lots def do say Shrow

I think this too, and I have relatives living there.

peekaboo1986 · 03/08/2023 20:29

@GeorgeSpeaks she visitors to the area mispronounce it was all the time and 99% say shroowsbury.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/08/2023 20:30

Correctly 😁

I eat my scowns on Shrewsbree not Shrowsbree

This.

GeorgeSpeaks · 03/08/2023 20:31

@Dombasle great article! This is the quote which will end this age old argument for me...

'But David Sopwith added: "It depends if you are Welsh or English. Shrewsbury was fought over by the two nations for centuries. If your from the Welsh side of the Severn 'shrews' English, 'shrows'."'

Problem is, I'm half English and half Welsh...

Shroasbury, but locals say Shoosbury.

Blarn · 03/08/2023 20:33

Sh rose bury. Many years ago there was a piece on Midlands Today about which was the correct pronunciation! I can't remember the verdict but having visited recently everyone there seemed to say Sh rews bury.

SageMist · 03/08/2023 20:33

In my experience there are 3 pronunciations: shrows-bree, shrews-bree and by far the most common, shews-bree (without the R).
They say it depends on which side of the river you were born!

From observation, this is pretty accurate. Most residents say Shrew, people from posher surrounding areas and generally posher people say Shrow.

KirstenBlest · 03/08/2023 20:35

I'm with @PowerToTheGnomes and @MouseKeys . Shoes-bury

KirstenBlest · 03/08/2023 20:35

Or Shoosbry
