Man on TV just pronounced it like shrew the rodent.

Isn't it said Shrowsbury?

It's Shrew

I says Shrow

Buts it's Shrew I live about 20 miles away

I live about 25 miles away. Locals here say ‘shoos-bee’. I say ‘Shroesbury’.

FloNightingale · 03/08/2023 20:40

Very old maps have it spelled as Shroesbury hence the pronunciation.

Sandysandwich · 03/08/2023 20:43

Not from anywhere near there so I always just said Shrews-bury, never heard shrosebury

sallyfacts · 03/08/2023 20:50

Shrosebury

BitchyHen · 03/08/2023 20:58

Another vote here for Shoes-bury.

BeckyBlue · 03/08/2023 21:07

I would say Shroo, but I vaguely remember that tv theme tune sing by Alison Moyet, where she pronounced it Shrow. So I always presumed that was the 'proper' way.

Now I've typed all that, I'm wondering if I've made that whole thing up Grin

SweetBirdsong · 03/08/2023 21:08

Shrooos-bree. There is no right or wrong though. Smile

CrunchyCarrot · 03/08/2023 21:08

Shrews-bury. My DP is from there - grew up there - and that's how he and all his friends pronounce it.

Now I think people saying 'Shrows-bury' are trying to be posh!

Drews · 03/08/2023 21:09

Depends which side of the river you come from.

LubaLuca · 03/08/2023 21:12

Shroosbury, probably more Shoosbury in everyday conversation. The Shrosebury way is wrong, an affectation.

Tulipvase · 03/08/2023 21:16

For the posters saying ‘shoe…..’ is that a type or do you really not pronounce the r?

ohtowinthelottery · 03/08/2023 21:16

I don't live far away. It's Shroosbury unless you're a proper Salopian in which case it's Shoosbury. If you're talking about the expensive public school though it's Shrowsbury.

The r is often dropped in casual conversation, when people are speaking quickly.

Birdienumnumm · 03/08/2023 21:26

Growing up next door in staffs we called it Shroes. But now I know people in Shrews and they all call
it Shrews (or Shews) so I’ve taken that pronunciation.

Blueplaque · 03/08/2023 21:29

Depends which side of the Severn you’re from as to whether you say Shrew or Shrow!!

Cheezecake · 03/08/2023 21:31

I always thought you were up yourself if you say sh-rose-bury. And bugger off if pronunciation has anything to do with what the yanks say. They can't even say tomato correctly.

AuntMarch · 03/08/2023 21:35

Shrow, I think. I have an accent lots of people think is posh though

KirstenBlest · 03/08/2023 21:37

@Tulipvase , several of us have posted the same pronunciation. We didn't all mistype.
The debate is always 'Is it Shroo or Shroa?' and either are fine, but the locals tend to say Shroosbry.

KirstenBlest · 03/08/2023 21:38

Sh*t! That Shroosbury was a typo!
Locals tend to say SHOOSBURY

Cranberriesandtea · 03/08/2023 21:40

Shrews-berry

neilyoungismyhero · 03/08/2023 21:41

Same as taming of the shrew.

Tulipvase · 03/08/2023 21:43

How sweet

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 03/08/2023 22:02
