What will replace them.. they are unique in what they sell.

B&M, One Below, The Range, all the pound shops all sell more or less the same as them for less. The only thing that’s different is the Wilkos branding on a lot of the items.

GodspeedJune · 03/08/2023 13:36

Ah. I hope they can pull through. My local store is well stocked, I was there last week. Always walk in for one item and leave with half a dozen (or more!).

WhatsitWiggle · 03/08/2023 13:37

I hope it doesn't go, it was a great replacement for Woolies and I'd buy all my stationery there, and a lot of homeware too. Recently the shelves have been poorly stocked though.

megletthesecond · 03/08/2023 13:37

I'm amazed ours lasted this long. I almost had the feel of being deliberately run down.
I was in there yesterday and did actually find what I wanted.
It's a pity as they're town centre based and used to be quite handy.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/08/2023 13:38

I'm really sorry to read this, but not surprised. They used to be excellent but for years the ones near me have been barely staffed, with half empty shelves - I presume they needed to cut costs, but the stores have visibly been dying.

Plus Ikea, Supermarkets, B&Q, Home Bargains, Screwfix.

The cost of living will be affecting retailers as well as the general public. Utilities increased, NMW increased and also a lot of shops (as well as chain restaurants) have huge amounts of debt, so I imagine that as that comes up for refinancing, it will be at a higher interest rate, so far more expensive.

Several towns near me have Wilkos in the shopping centre. B and M and The Range are further away on out of town retail parks. I've never heard of one below though.
I think they sell a greater range of things than poundland....because they are more than a pound! Eg, cat food, printer ink, ironing stuff (I know most of MN doesn't believe in ironing!) Paint etc

User165753 · 03/08/2023 13:45

B&M are usually out of town, I walk to Wilko as it is in town. Range is nowhere near me

Iamgoingtohell · 03/08/2023 13:47

Oh 😞 I love Wilkos, go almost every week to get stuff. So sad

Trinity65 · 03/08/2023 13:48

Its a shame as I do like Wilko

However, I popped in a month or so ago for a hair dye to find it was £8.00
Went into Superdrug and they had it for £7.00

Went to Savers instead and bought it for £5.95.

Needmorelego · 03/08/2023 13:48

@QueefQueen80s they are hardly unique in what they sell.
B+M
Home Bargains
The Range
One Below
Dunelm
Non food section of supermarkets
Poundstretchers
Poundland
All sell pretty much the same stuff.

wayyour · 03/08/2023 13:49

Not surprised, but sad to hear of the job losses.

User165753 · 03/08/2023 13:49

I went in there this morning and brought lots of half price seeds and some other stuff, the shelves are quite empty though. I also buy the garden stuff, bird feeders and birdseed from there

Needmorelego · 03/08/2023 13:50

@miserablecat poundland has sold stuff for more than £1 for several years now.

missbunnyrabbit · 03/08/2023 13:51

Oh no, this is bad news for me. I don't have a car and Wilko is the shop I visit most - I have used them so much for DIY stuff and gardening. Not sure where else I could go.

User165753 · 03/08/2023 13:51

We haven't got any of the other shops named on this thread apart from home bargains which is horrible

EvenlyDetermined · 03/08/2023 13:52

I liked it because it was on the High St and didn’t have to drive out to a retail park and in its day it was far better than Poundland etc (our local Poundland is much smaller than the Wilko). The gardening stuff was always good, but the last few times I’ve been I’ve come away empty-handed, that never used to happen.

B&q homebase wickes

Needmorelego · 03/08/2023 13:56

@User165753 if your local
Wilko goes one of the other retailers might take over the place.

I don't have the others in my town centres apart from the home bargains and poundland etc, and can't get the DIY range at those places

QueefQueen80s · 03/08/2023 14:02

Okay unique for me in that wilko are in town centres and not retail parks like the bigger diy places.
The cheap shops that are in town centres don't have the same diy and gardening range.

PickAChew · 03/08/2023 14:02

They had no DIY stuff in their shelves other than their own when DH was in there, the other day so we're not surprised.

watersprites · 03/08/2023 14:04

I didn’t see it coming. Our local stores are fantastic.

Same & don't really have the competitors neat me. I'm someone who uses the high street, I'm impulsive & just want something asap.

mumda · 03/08/2023 14:05

I mostly buy notebooks from them. Bought online from them last time as a trip out to them costs me more in time and petrol than the delivery.

missbunnyrabbit · 03/08/2023 14:06

MaxwellCat · 03/08/2023 13:53

B&q homebase wickes

There aren't any of those in my town. And I can't drive due to medical reasons.
