Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

Ashton & Parsons Teething Gel - just threw away a whole tube as it's "free from anaesthetic" and claims to soothe gums with a tiny amount of aloe vera and by having bristles on the applicator? No wonder poor baby kept crying!

JamSandle · 01/08/2023 00:34

Haircuts
Nail polish
New clothes

All a waste of money - can cut hair myself and have all the clothes I need.

I've given up paying a cleaner and gardener. I do a better job myself and people are asking silly money around here which makes me appreciate doing it myself. I keep thinking of all the £££ towards the holiday budget and calories burned!

I've considered doing my own mowing but I'd still need the gardener in to do all the weeding (which I certainly couldn't be arsed with) so he might as well keep doing the mowing as well.

QS90 · 01/08/2023 00:37

@Beseen22 What did you do their nappies with?! We call them Bum Wipes rather than Baby Wipes at ours 😂and get through packets!

SheerLucks · 01/08/2023 00:40

Secondwindplease · 31/07/2023 22:21

Kitchen roll. Never understood it.

OMG kitchen roll is indispensable round here, and so cheap!

Fakemeateater · 01/08/2023 00:41

Never bought a brand new car. All the cars I've owned have been second hand, and I'm currently driving a car that has been in circulation for 19 years. It's a Volvo 🤣

Beseen22 · 01/08/2023 00:52

@QS90 one was born abroad and very few people used baby wipes there. Cannot tell you the amount of times I seen a tiny baby under the tap in a baby change room sink. Neither of mine pooped much out the house to be honest and we had certain cloth that were for faces and others for bums at home. Damped toilet roll helped if needed.

charabang · 01/08/2023 01:26

acrylic nails, kitchen roll, bottled water, scented candles, mobile phone contract, monthly car valet, bought lunches. All were regular outgoings around three years ago.

Ampharos · 01/08/2023 01:52

Acrylic nails - this is a sad one for me as I loved having them but they kept getting broken in work and having a throbbing finger wasn’t worth how nice they looked for the first week

Magazines - genuinely can’t remember the last time I bought one

Some makeup items - I love makeup but over the years I’ve definitely found what works for me and stuck with it. I don’t bother buying expensive foundation, concealer and mascara anymore. I do buy high end eyeshadows and eye brow products though. For lips it really depends, I used to only buy high end but I’ve found some decent “drugstore” versions now that are just as good, but they don’t have the extensive shade range so it depends what I’m looking for. I’ve also found good alternatives for my favourite KVD beauty eyeliner.

I couldn’t have moved to cheaper brands sooner than recently, though. It wasn’t that long ago foundation shades in drugstore brands was limited to 5 or so shades (I’m very pale so I always looked orange) etc.

I also box dye my hair now rather than going to get it done at the hairdressers (only because I want my hair black these days rather than blonde balayage, I’d never have attempted that at home!)

And one I learned a few years ago the hard way, cheap clothes (Boohoo level cheap etc). I was pregnant and needed clothes to last me the last trimester but didn’t want to spend much due to it only being a few months. What arrived on my doorstep was the biggest load of tat I’ve ever seen. Kept a few things I’d ordered out of desperation and they had holes in them within the 3 months.

Absolute waste of money.

I don't understand how you manage without kitchen roll? We ran out tonight and I've just cooked vegetarian burgers on a pan. There is some grease and I would use the kitchen roll to wipe that up rather than pour down the drain. What do you do?

This is the sole reason I buy it. I live in a new build now and rejoice in the fact that no (or at least as little as we can manage) grease is going down our drain. For 30 years I lived in a very rural place with septic tank drainage. It really focusses your mind on what should or shouldn't be going down your pipes.

Lachimolala · 01/08/2023 02:15

I don’t use kitchen roll either, seems wasteful. I let it harden and scrape into the bin.

Antibacterial fairy liquid for cleaning, instead of a million different sprays.

Do my own hair, waxes, eyebrows and nails.

And mostly everything I buy is from Vinted or eBay these days.

I would pour any excess cooking fat into a glass container, let it cool down and harden overnight in the fridge, then I would bin the fat in the food waste container.

That only works if you have hard fats like butter or lard. Oil is much better for you and doesn’t set.

GreenwichOrTwicks · 01/08/2023 02:17

Have never had
nails done
bought designer clothes. Get lots of compliments on my clothes which are mainly from Asda/Sainsburys/Tesco 🤣
take away coffee

No longer
buy newspaper or magazines
don’t have a TV licence as can’t stand the BBC and wish it would fold as a totally outdated model of delivery and waste.
Don’t go to hairdresser for acting other than cut - used to have weekly blow dries when I had a corporate job.

When you do that there is always residue left in the pan/dish or whatever. I never have enough fat left in a pan to be able to pour it out but just a thin layer several times a week washed down your drains can quickly affect them. I'm a veteran septic tank owner so speak from experience.

I've also never bought bleach. Been an adult for 21 years now and never needed it.

Bleach is not good for the environment also.

NoisePolice5 · 01/08/2023 02:25

I used to buy it but no more unless it’s a very special occasion - wrapping paper for gifts. The recipient looks at it for 5 seconds then it’s ripped off and if you've used tape can’t even be recycled. What a fucking waste of a tree.

coxesorangepippin · 01/08/2023 02:34

Expensive sunglasses

I get mine from the pound shop

They actually aren't the same if you see the specifications side by side. Cheaper own brand products generally use inferior quality ingredients and some unnecessary cheap fillers etc. It's a myth that they're the same.

Not always. Foxes make biscuits for M and S and a couple of other companies.

Mines not me but my carer, he used to buy Aunt Bessies Yorkshire puddings, until I showed him how easy they are to make and how many he could make for the same amount of money spent.

BananaSpanner · 01/08/2023 02:58

Kitchen roll and fabric conditioner are essentials for me.

Ive stopped getting my nails done. It had become a real chore. I just do it myself now with ordinary nail varnish and take off after a day or so. Like olden times…

I have stopped buying high end skin care and make up and just use mid/budget range with absolutely no difference.

I still get my highlights done at the hair dresser and am convinced my hair would look hideous and be in terrible condition if I used home hair dye.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 01/08/2023 03:04

Dishwasher. It takes 10 minutes to wash up (withe the exception of Christmas etc) And if you have teenagers, then they can do it. One can wash, One can dry. And if they refuse, Wi-Fi goes off or phones get confiscated. Simple.

The supermarket brands are often the first of the batch. It’s almost identical but not usually as good quality.
