Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

Pyjamas. Just wear underwear and t shirts

Beseen22 · 31/07/2023 23:50

Baby wipes. Boys are 6 and 3 now and can count on one hand the amount of times I've bought Baby wipes. We go to the toilet after meals when out and wash our hands and faces if required and we have loads of cheap face cloths for in the house.

Same with nappy bags. The nappies can all fold in on each other then can be disposed of immediately.

I realise neither of these things are expensive and this all started from me forgetting to carry the baby essentials then deciding that they weren't all that essential for me.

RaininSummer · 31/07/2023 23:52

Fabric softener

Bottled water. In my 20s I volunteered in Africa for six months in an area where there was no running water - it was up to me to fetch and carry water for my own use on a daily basis. I know some people say the water that comes from their taps tastes awful and that's why they buy bottled water, but the bottom line is the water that comes into UK homes is potable even if it has a "taste". It's a luxury for which many undeveloped nations would give their eye teeth.

Crikeyalmighty · 31/07/2023 23:55

Far less magazines
Highlights once a year now professionally and Color it myself maybe twice on top of that- still looks fine
Tumble dryer sheets and fabric conditioner
Far less clothes but better quality when I do buy
Far less make up and skin care

I got rid of BT landline internet and just use my vodaphone/O2 mobile as a hotspot.

I stopped paying for the gym and did hardcore free weights at home and stuff (trained in fitness in the past) but now I'm back at the gym as well as I briefly thought I might have developed an injury and it'd be safer. No one really needs to pay for fitness in theory, eventually I'll probably get rid of my rolling monthly membership of PureGym again. I went to other gyms in the past but the council gym didn't have quite as many machines. Was stuck in a contract with Nuffield gym years ago, a rip off and they were rubbish, loads of classes cancelled etc.

Charity shopping- at the moment I've decided it's better to spend money on buying clothes I really, really, want, rather than buying a lot of not-quite-as-like-what-I-want items (unless you really strike it lucky.)

Kitchen roll. Never understood it.

It's what you have to buy when there's a toilet paper shortage.

porridgeisbae · 01/08/2023 00:01

TV license.

My DM used to do that but she would use a used food tin. I liked swigging the juice out of a tin when the fruit had been eaten. Until one day I swigged cooling liquid fat my DM put in an empty fruit tin. Bleurgh.

😫

ToWhitToWhoo · 01/08/2023 00:04

Designer clothes- I'm not interested in paying loads extra just for a label.

I never bought baby wipes. I was given a few packs of disposable of ones and loads of reusable ones. So just used those. I actually found a pack of the disposable ones in the garage yesterday, all mouldy.

sjpkgp1 · 01/08/2023 00:06

Magazines and Newspapers
Special facial wipes (any does, including the cheap baby ones)
Some packet mixes (e.g. for chilli con carne etc. just use supermarket own spices now)
Extended guarantees on white goods
The one I am working on is seats on planes. I'm not quite there yet. But know I should stop being so ridiculous. DS aged 17 has just booked to go away with friend, neither wanted to pay the extra £28 to sit together both ways. So I said "fine, but you know you will probably be in the middle seat miles from each other" They said "it is what it is". Booked it, checked in, they are next to each other both flights. Proved ridiculous again ! x

TommyNever · 01/08/2023 00:08

I still regularly buy books but haven't bought a magazine or newspaper for years, though I do like looking through vintage magazines.

lart · 01/08/2023 00:09

Hairdressers
Manicures
Taxis
Bottled water
Supermarket sandwiches
Takeaway coffee
Fabric softener
Music
High end skincare and cosmetics

I do buy kitchen roll and use it daily. I always keep a sheet in my pocket for wiping toddler's nose, as it doesn't disintegrate like ordinary tissue. And taking out with a picnic lunch, we use it to wipe spills, mouths, messy spoons etc. Don't really use it in the kitchen though!

porridgeisbae · 01/08/2023 00:10

I'm trying to use bleach less because I kept accidentally getting it on my clothes, either while using it or maybe brushing up against something I'd bleached.

Takenoprisoner · 01/08/2023 00:13

HedgesNotFences · 31/07/2023 22:22

Never bought branded products as they are the same as supermarket own but cost a lot more. It has saved me loads of money over the years.

This

I buy hardly any branded products. Exceptions are Fairy liquid because it lasts better than any other detergent brand, and Ecover washing powder because of the environmentally friendly element.

nealjacob53 · 01/08/2023 00:14

i use kitchen roll for cleaning windows inside also if you need to heat something up in the microwave such as curry or any sauce , a sheet over stops it from spitting all the inside of microwave

Plantymcplantface · 01/08/2023 00:19

Magazines and newspapers
shoes that I can’t run for a bus in
nail varnish
subscription razors
subscription cat food

need to keep working on dropping my online Amazon habit but it is so useful for last minute things. Ditto eBay for anything new. But I do like
the auctions.

Bonfire23 · 01/08/2023 00:20

@StrawberriesSW1 not who you quoted but I use washing up liquid for the bath/sinks etc. in one of those brushes that dispenses it, add a bit of white vinegar and it makes the shower screen really shiny

UncleHerbie · 01/08/2023 00:22

StrikeItMucky · 31/07/2023 22:27

You pour grease down the drain, if you don't have kitchen roll?!
You do realise that's a big no-no?! As it causes "fatbergs" in the sewers and clogs up pipes 🫤

This! 😱😳😱

ReadingSoManyThreads · 01/08/2023 00:23

GarlicGrace · 31/07/2023 23:07

Some are identical, @ReadingSoManyThreads. I'm the annoying Reader Of Labels you wish would just pick one & get out of the way!

Supermarket foods in particular; it's often obvious that they're the same product from the same factory, even in the same packaging with a different label.

I also read labels, so I have no issue with you being in the way!

They aren't the same, for instance in scones, the higher priced one will have free range egg, the cheaper own brand will have caged eggs etc. I worked in food manufacturers for nearly 20yrs, specifically with the Technical Specifications (recipes) departments, who supplied supermarkets with both their branded products and the customer (supermarket) own branded versions. Even if all ingredients listed on both are the same, the quality will most certainly be inferior on the cheaper product.

porridgeisbae · 01/08/2023 00:24

A PP mentioned not having to buy sanitary products due to menopause.

I had an operation to remove the womb lining due to my periods becoming particularly heavy and annoying. Would recommend it to everyone (once you've finished any family you've hoped to have maybe, or are childfree.)

It's called endometrial ablation. Most women they can get to have no periods or some do have them but they're far lighter.

An iron. Never owned one and never will

I've always had an iron and find it indispensable for shirts, especially in summer.
