Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

OP posts:

Fabric softener.
Fresh towels in our house are like cardboard and I prefer them that way.

bemusedmoose · 02/08/2023 22:28

Magazines - so bloody expensive and never anything interesting in them.

Would never get a gardener unless i have several acres of landscaped gardens i cant manage.

Dont bother with posh clothes and shoes anymore - never get to wear them and i feel weird in them anyway.

Lipstick. Must be just me but either it's gone in 30 seconds or those permanent ones look nice for a few mins then change to a weird colour and make my lips look like they are cracking. Just not worth the hassle.

Any form of wet wipe, single use cleaning wipe or similar. Just use a damp flipping cloth with a bit of soap. No waste and cheaper!

Hair conditioner - gave up using it when i realised i have to wash my hair a ton more if i use it. It's no less shiny or more tangled for ditching it and it doesnt get greasy as fast. Plus saves money.

Expensive limescale removing toilet cleaners and bathroom products - sprinkle of citric acid and leave over night, job done without scrubbing. Works on shower screens, fogged drinking glasses and hard water marks.

Handwash. Bar soap is fine and cheaper.

Ready meals - they tast crap, cost more and you're still hungry after. Now i batch cook for the freezer.

Irons, boards and special ironing water. Utter waste of time and money. Have an anti wrinkle function on the washer so they come out crease free and hang up to dry. After 5 mins of wear they look exactly as an ironed shirt would look. Anything with creases gets hung up in the bathroom and the steam from the shop makes them drop out.

Plug in air freshners!! So expensive now it's ridiculous !

Thisisnotreallymyname · 02/08/2023 23:14

Let cooking fat go hard and throw it out for the birds

I should’ve read whole thread before posting !

Same here. I've never understood why people rave about big fluffy towels, let alone spend money to make them soft.

Thisismynewname23 · 02/08/2023 23:49

Same here we hardly use any products now fairy does pretty much everything it’s even great for getting our stains pre washing

Fluffmum · 02/08/2023 23:50

Magazines kitchen roll expensive make up expensive towels, asdas are perfect for family life, fairy non bio, Sainsbury’s is cheaper and does a fab job

Blimey, some of these replies sound rather joyless and worthy.
I don't buy expensive skincare. I'm struggling to believe that a £75 moisturiser is so much better for you skin than a £5 or £15 moisturiser. The same for make up remover.

Willmafrockfit · 03/08/2023 06:56

Brocolli
just me and dh now
brocolli is pointless
we dont like it much, it would last for ages

Same, plus the smell of fabric softener makes me feel sick, it’s so overpowering, don’t know how people can cope with the smell mixed in with deodorant/perfume too!

We just stick to Freesat, Freeview and YouTube. Can't be bothered with Netflix or sky. A lot of the program they rave about on the adverts don't even seem that good.

Also why do men waste money on boxer shorts? Briefs cost less and do the same job (& look nicer)

Im sorry but on what planet do they look nicer... they look bloody awful.

Daisypp · 03/08/2023 08:29

If I'm desperate for coffee when out I buy Pret a Manger filter coffee. £1.10 if you use your own cup

Nutterjacks · 03/08/2023 10:17

I don't understand how you manage without kitchen roll? We ran out tonight and I've just cooked vegetarian burgers on a pan. There is some grease and I would use the kitchen roll to wipe that up rather than pour down the drain. What do you do?

Pour it into the compost bin in your kitchen/outdoors, never down the drain! 😱

There is joy in reducing consumption, and it is worthy of respect; the attempt to reduce waste and conserve resources. Of course if you choose to buy unnecessary stuff, who is to judge whether it is or is not necessary for the individual? It's so good to hear of others who are embracing less consumption.

I agree I’m consciously trying to simplify my life by buying less, reducing things in the house less to clean and organise, if I buy something I go to vinted and sell something to bring something else in

angela99999 · 03/08/2023 12:07

Nespresso capsules or the supermarket equivalent. Used to buy them but now have a bean to cup machine, expensive to buy initially, but so much cheaper to use.

angela99999 · 03/08/2023 12:08

Very expensive electric ovens. The latest one I bought was from John Lewis and is better than any oven I've ever had, Which Best Buy and cleans itself. It was half the price of many of the branded alternatives.

angela99999 · 03/08/2023 12:10

And we've just given up Sky, every eighteen months or so it works it's way up to a ridiculous price and you have to haggle. Rarely watched Sky channels and now have a Firestick which cost £25 and gets all the TV we want.

VinEtFromage · 02/08/2023 15:04

@@lastminutewednesday that's not true though, the 'branded' ones have a coating that enables me to swallow them. The non branded ones are more dry, powder coated and I really struggle to swallow them.

im happy to pay a few p more to get a product im happier with.

Yes, I use "migraine" ibuprofen, I don't know what is different about it but I can choke it down more easily and they seem to work faster.

We don’t insure either.
We had a £20,000 quote for house insurance and contents.
We dropped the contents and they dropped fire and flood bringing it down to £8000. But what the hell were they actually insuring.
So we don’t bother now.
If it all went up in smoke we’d start again.
As it is we ve taken a huge risk but now ,after 12 years, we ve saved £240,000

Fortunately we've always had insurance, we once had a fire which didn't destroy much (other than the wooden ground floor) but did a lot of smoke damage. We've also been burgled once.
We had a ridiculous contents quote from one company, the year after we'd started to use them the cost doubled. So we switched and went back to even lower than the cost the year before. Same with buildings insurance, we always shop around and do keep the cost down to a reasonable level. Like us you many not be able to use a standard policy, but even so the specialist departments in many insurance companies will give you a decent quote.
OK, a total loss isn't very likely to happen - but it can. You could be left with a ruin of a house and no money for rubble removal and rebuilding. A few hundred pounds is worth it for peace of mind.

I said yesterday, that it was slipping into Monty Python's 'The Four Yorkshireman' sketch.

I wouldn’t put fat in the outdoor compost bin unless you have a particular love of rats.

If anyone has found a convincing dupe for Nutella, please tell me. I can no longer justify the expense of it! I bought a supermarket one with the very same ingredients & same % of hazelnuts but it just ain't the same.
