Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

Body exfoliators. A pumice stone and a warm soapy lather does the job better for most areas, costs sod all, and there’s no plastic bottle or tube to ditch afterwards.

Why, doesn't your washing machine work?

Also, there's nothing to stop you having "dirt" or , "kitchen spills" or whatever category you want of cloths.

That's pretty much what I do, I have cloths that live in different areas of the house, which get used for different stuff. But I can't guarantee that a kitchen cloth has never been used for cat wee (in fact, I can more likely guarantee it has) but if you are someone who would find that unacceptable, it could be easily managed so it didn't happen.

Don't people wash underpants separately?! I do them on a hotter wash to kill any lingering bacteria or smells (or so I thought). Plus there's the ick feeling of my favourite tops going in with crappy pants.

Willmafrockfit · 02/08/2023 10:50

i think the instructions on my knickers says 40 degree, not a hot wash

beguilingeyes · 02/08/2023 10:58

Newspapers, magazines. The internet has replaced all that stuff. We buy the Ipaper on Saturday for the quiz.
I really miss Time Outs physical listings though.
I'm an old person, I've never got the bottled water thing. I've always though it was a massive con. We even had people at work the other week questioning whether they could drink water out of the tap! Was it safe?

MistyGreenAndBlue · 02/08/2023 11:12

Anti ageing/wrinkle cream/serum/ whatever.
None of them work. It's all a con.

Only if you crap your pants, I suppose.

If not, then no harm in washing them with your other bits.

Fabric softener, pointless and the smell makes me feel queasy anyway.

Kitchen roll/disposal cloths of any kind - I use washable dishcloths and let fat harden then scrape into the food waste.

Bottles of bleach, I get the tubs of tablets that you dissolve in water, same outcome and loads less bottles going in the bin (and cheaper).

What are these? I like the idea but I've never heard of this. Where do I get them?
Thanks

@AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen Yay! Someone who understands! And I know it's a risk, but I don't honestly think it's a massive risk. How likely is it, really, that the entire house will burn down?

Exactly!
But likewise I’m glad we re not the only ones.

AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen · 02/08/2023 11:34

Fakemeateater · 02/08/2023 01:03

@Time40 home insurance also covers accidents that could happen on your property to other people, and there is also legal protection cover. If, for example, your house exploded and someone was killed as a consequence, it's not just your house that you are covering, you'd also be covering potentially being sued. Hope you have a big budget?

But that’s just the point @Time40 and I have said we could cover it if it happened.
So working on the balance of probability we’ve decided not to.

SkylarSpirit · 02/08/2023 11:34

I've never used kitchen roll, ever. (And I've never had "leftover cooking fat" - I'm not sure what that is, exactly. Amusing debate to read, though.)

Who knew that kitchen roll was so controversial! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do you eat meat?

I find I have cooking fat left over from a roast or sausages, chops etc.

carduelis · 02/08/2023 11:42

I’ve been to a hairdresser twice in my entire life, once before I started university (at my mum’s insistence) and once before my wedding. I have no idea how people find the time and the money to go. Every so often I think maybe I should go to one just once but it’s not like you have your hair cut really well once and that’s it for ever so that seems a bit pointless.

RampantIvy · 02/08/2023 11:42

Just now - summer clothes.

In terms of duty of care. I wouldn’t invite friends around if my house was not well maintained. You can only be sued if it can be proved it isn’t safe as we would be in breach and therefore liable.

We are not attached or even anywhere near another property so an explosion wouldn’t take out anyone else’s property. If I was attached I’d insure.
OS we also don’t have gas.

I ought to clarify that I absolutely don’t think it’s a waste of money for everyone, just that it would be for me, if that makes sense!

No, I'm vegan.

I don't eat fried food, so I pretty much use just cooking spray for everything, or I put a teaspoon of oil in the pan for stirfry or softening onions.

It absolutely does make sense, and you’ve put it more politely than a lot of pps who make different choices to others….I see my 8weekly hair colouring session as £40 well spent…I have a great blether with my friend who does it (she used to be my hairdresser, after 20 years she’s now my friend who does my hair) for a couple of hours, I make us lunch and numerous cuppas, and I come out of it with no dark roots-I love it….and with that £40 and couple of hours you’ll do something different that I maybe wouldn’t do, and that’s fine too!

carduelis · 02/08/2023 12:54

@Heyhoherewegoagain I’m pretty sure 99.9% of the population would consider their hair appointments money well spent - and most of them would be more expensive and less enjoyable than yours sound! I guess I just feel like a decent hair cut/style/colour wouldn’t make me look any better so I can’t justify it.

I have been trying to convince DH for years that we should spend the money I save on hair appointments on a cleaner…

Branded pain killers. You are effectively paying for the pretty box, they do the same as supermarket 90p ones.

RampantIvy · 02/08/2023 13:39

I can't cut my own hair as I don't have the skills. Thinning, grey, long straggly hair is not a good look on me so spending money on my hair is not an unnecessary expense for me. I envy people with low maintenance hair.

lastminutewednesday · 02/08/2023 13:46

Those that dont have insurance: as someone whose house actually did burn down (or half of it anyway and the rest was badly water from the hoses and smoke) I would urge you to change your mind.

We would have been absolutely screwed with no insurance. Even the things that weren't burned were largely ruined or needed specialist cleaning. We needed somewhere to live pronto . We needed our house rebuilt. We needed clothes and toiletries overnight as we had just what we had on at the time of the fire. We needed kennels for the dogs. We needed counselling for one of our kids who was very traumatised. Without insurance none of these things would have been very possible. Or not for the length of time/amounts we needed them in anyway!
We thought it would never happen. Until it did!

Apparently the branded ones are actually marginally more effective purely because of the placebo effect - you think that paying more makes them work better so it does. By the same token, two tablets work better than one (even when the dosage is the same) and injections work better than pills. The mind is an amazing thing!
