Dog accessories - they have a coat for the depths of winter but that's it.
Bath bombs - completely pointless.
Many kitchen gadgets.
Clothes/shoes that aren't a perfect fit.

Regarding cloths, I wash them.once a week on a 95° wash with aerial biological. It serves also to keep the machine sweet smelling.

Time40 · 01/08/2023 23:21

@AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen Yay! Someone who understands! And I know it's a risk, but I don't honestly think it's a massive risk. How likely is it, really, that the entire house will burn down?

RosesAndHellebores · 01/08/2023 23:30

@Time40 one if neighbours' did. They lost the contents. No insurance.

I do see your point to be fair. We have some interesting stuff and insure property through Lloyd's, along with the cars and the boat. We don't tick the boxes for standard domestic insurers. We have a high excess but if the worst happened much would be covered.

porridgeisbae · 02/08/2023 00:39

A friend of my mum's house had a major fire and it was very inconvenient as you can imagine. Thankfully she had insurance that covered the cost of somewhere for her to live for six months or something, etc.

Cheesenpickleontoast · 02/08/2023 00:49

Some dick of a friend of DH scoffed that we 'wasted' our money on house insurance. He'd never waste his money on that. When asked what he'd do if his house had a fire, flood or subsidence, he stated that his FIL was loaded and would see them right.

Fakemeateater · 02/08/2023 01:03

@Time40 home insurance also covers accidents that could happen on your property to other people, and there is also legal protection cover. If, for example, your house exploded and someone was killed as a consequence, it's not just your house that you are covering, you'd also be covering potentially being sued. Hope you have a big budget?

Time40 · 02/08/2023 01:52

@Fakemeateater Come on ... that's so unlikely. It isn't going to happen. Really it isn't. (Although now you mention it ... yeah, I do have a pretty big budget, as it happens!)

£20k for buildings and contents insurance @AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen? Where do you live? Buckingham Palace?

We have just had quote for ours which is due soon, and it is under £700 for a 4 bedroomed detached house.

Unless you can afford to lose everything not having buildings and contents insurance is very foolish. I assume you live in an area with a very low crime rate as well.

I use DS19 old muslins. I cut them into quarters and zigzag edged them years ago. Then just chuck in the wash.

@00100001 but personally, washed or not, I wouldn't dry salad leaves on a cloth id used to dry football boots.

VinEtFromage · 02/08/2023 08:17

AsterixAndPersimmon · 01/08/2023 18:51

@VinEtFromage why wouldn’t you put the washing cloths you’ve used let’s say in the kitchen in the same wash than clothes?

I mean, we wash underwear with general clothes even though they are just as likely ‘contaminated’ with faeces as a cloth used to clean the outside of the loo (inside is cleaned with the toilet brush here Shock).
im not sure why you need to separate them?

@AsterixAndPersimmon

No, kitchen cloths & t towels go in together, after a Dettol soak. They don't go in with clothes (including pants).

why? It just doesn't seem hygienic to me. Yes, I know they get washed in there, & my machine is a good one, but it still doesn't seem 'right'.

as for cloths with clothes. Just no thanks, bits of lint & just unhygienic IMO.

cat pee cloths in with my clothes, no thanks.

VinEtFromage · 02/08/2023 08:26

OsirisservesAnubis · 01/08/2023 18:50

Yes, I clean cat pee up with a cloth!

Loo roll is better than kitchen roll because kitchen roll contains plastic, it's what makes it more robust. Loo roll also decomposes much much faster and is better for the environment.

I only use loo roll as a last resort. Cloth is number one in our house.

@OsirisservesAnubis so you clean cat food & cat pee up with a cloth, wash the cloths in with everything else, then next it might dry dishes, wipe down a work top etc?

VinEtFromage · 02/08/2023 08:29

OsirisservesAnubis · 31/07/2023 23:35

A spatula. Then scrape the spatula on the side of the bin.

You scrape the spatula on the bin??

You & I could never live together.

temosmail · 02/08/2023 08:44

@AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen yeah you are making up shit

Yes I do! I'm not really sure what the issue is. It's the compost bin, it's emptied and cleaned at least once a day!

The spatula is then washed. I don't reuse it before washing it.

Yes. It goes in the washing machine with detergent and comes out clean.

Are you one of those people who launders underwear separately and then disinfects the machine afterwards?

It's a washing machine. It's literally designed to clean stuff. If stuff doesn't come out clean then what is the point?

@OsirisservesAnubis

nope, underwear goes in with other clothes.

the 'point' is that I'm happy a washing machine cleans things well enough to do the same 'job' again.

but there's absolutely no way I want to be drying dishes with a cloth that's previously been used to mop up cat oee. No way, not even if you'd soaked it in a fresh bleach solution every day for a week
🤢

Willmafrockfit · 02/08/2023 09:21

i dont have a cat
my dog sometimes wees in the bathroom,
i use anything to clean it up.
the washing machine works
i dont like disposable cloths,
who on earth uses those disposable floor cloths/wet wipe things? shocking. so wasteful.

Willmafrockfit · 02/08/2023 09:22

we need to make up for all the plastic waste that occurred during covid.

But it’s quite easy to have cloths that are clearly different for cat wee and still put them with a normal wash?

That’s what I do with the cloth used to clean toilets. I used it, put it in the wash with the rest of the clothes and use it again just for that?

Fluffy40 · 02/08/2023 09:31

Bottled water, take away coffee, magazines. I’m very tight.

I don't think you're right. I think you make sensibile spending choices.

those mini packets of flavoured couscous - i just make my own

Presumably you chop off your own hands then as they might have touched cat wee and there's obviously no way to ensure your hands are clean enough to use ever again for anything other than wiping cat wee with a piece of paper towel.

Why, doesn't your washing machine work?

Also, there's nothing to stop you having "dirt" or , "kitchen spills" or whatever category you want of cloths.
