Thread 9 - TalkLair: “Russell's teapot goes on being round”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 8).

The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with summer flowers - should bloody well be, what with all that rain. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Awww, how sweet CB is! You are her people now, like it or not.

CyanCrystalViolet · 03/08/2023 14:38

She’s so pretty! And sassy 😻

I’m struggling to imagine my life before cats. It’s like everything makes sense now: I was put on this earth to Cat.

Kucinghitam · 03/08/2023 14:44

I need to explain to CB that while she may think we are her people, she is in fact Not Our Cat and I don't want to be one of those cat-stealing mad neighbours.

Bah! No sooner had I got my head around being 60, my first bowel cancer screening kit has come through the post.

In happier “being 60” news, I have just received my first free NHS prescription! That’s £20 a month saved. (I know I should have bought a pre-paid card but every month I thought “well hopefully this will be the last one”, when really I knew deep down I’ll be on these meds for life now.)

MavisMcMinty · 03/08/2023 15:07

Ha ha ha! Just read this in the instructions, including their own bold and exclamation mark:

“We only need a little poo to test - please do not add extra!”

Gonna guess they’ve been getting a lot of “extra” arriving in the post.

Tricyrtis2022 · 03/08/2023 15:12

That's both disgusting and hilarious!

Sorry Gwynnie, I'd love to be there but I'm afraid I have a subsequent engagement.

Drilling holes in your feet?

I'm hearing CB purring "You're my people now" in the manner of Papa Lazarou.

MouseMinge · 03/08/2023 19:06

Her home people will remain her people, you are her extra people although cats are fickle so she might bin her first people. I love the inconsistency of cats.

In other news today was the fourth of my six dressmaking classes. I've had many moments of utter stupidity including not understanding properly that clothes are 3D so you don't have to panic when not all of the sides match because the will, you halfwit. Anyway, the trousers I'm making are now recognisably trousers. Big old clown trousers because the elastic hasn't been sewn into the waist band. I'm sewing up the pockets at home this weekend - I've managed to set up my machine and I've been using it too! - and I'll see if I'm confident enough to tackle more. I'm so proud of myself and I am LOVING my course!

MouseMinge · 03/08/2023 19:10

A friend once sent me an email that just said "You're my wife now." I hadn't seen that far into The League of Gentlemen and I was quite disturbed. I've since seen Papa Lazarou and was disturbed all over again.

Britinme · 03/08/2023 21:38

I am very impressed by your sewing accomplishments, @MouseMinge

Many thanks to the thread for telling me about the Great Pottery Throwdown, which I discover I can see on streaming - just watched episode 1 of season 1 and can see that I will work my way through available seasons.

MavisMcMinty · 03/08/2023 21:52

Oh it’s such a wonderful programme, Brit!

MouseMinge · 03/08/2023 22:52

I love the tears. I haven't watched the last series yet because it clashed with something else I watched on the BBC. Can't remember what now but I really much catch up with it. It's so lovely.

Thank you, @Britinme ! I'm sort of enjoying having to learn and accept that I'm not automatically good at it. I think that too often in life we try something, decide we're not good at it and give up. I've done that a lot in the past. This time, I'm trying, I'm getting a bit better every week and eventually I might be quite good at it. I'm excited to make some clothes for the baby my friend's niece is going to have in December. She's not my niece, obviously, but her sisters and her all call me Auntie Mouse, so I'm so looking forward to it! It's a girl which makes for even more fun clothes to make. Years ago when the first Sewing Bee book came out, I bought it and it has lots of patterns in it including three baby/toddler patterns which I'll be making for the new baby girl.

Britinme · 03/08/2023 23:24

I used to have a house in the 80s with a dark red bathroom like that - we were in that house for six years and never got round to changing it.

CyanCrystalViolet · 04/08/2023 00:51

My mum’s house has hideous faux antique wardrobes like that. Nothing like as grand though.

artant · 04/08/2023 01:57

I kind of love all the 70s’ vibe stuff. Rip out the twiddly faux antique stuff and it could be amazing. Over half a million quid (plus renovation costs) sounds like a lot of money to live in Neath though.

MavisMcMinty · 04/08/2023 02:36

The bedroom furniture seems to have been modelled on Sindy’s bedroom!

Kucinghitam · 04/08/2023 07:07

I rather like that house! It's quite stylish in its own way. And looks very bright with big windows and that cool 70s split-level broken-plan layout.

My FiL's place is a bit of a time capsule. Original 1950s primrose-yellow bathroom. G-Plan furniture throughout. Swirly brown carpets. This sort of clock on the living-room wall. But it's not stylish, being from the 50s and in The North, it has small separate rooms and small windows.

The first thing that comes to mind with those bathrooms is 'limescale' but it would be okay if you soft water.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/08/2023 07:37

if you had soft water

CyanCrystalViolet · 04/08/2023 09:12

Oh god, yes, hadn’t thought of that. Both bathrooms would be white within a week in my area.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/08/2023 09:47

So would ours.

Britinme · 04/08/2023 10:25

My house was built in 1973 in the heyday of the sunken living room. When we bought it,it was a dysfunctional nightmare. However, Mr Brit is an architect so five years later and a hell of a lot of renovations including moving the stairs 90 degrees, reshaping two bedrooms and the landing, blocking up the old front door and creating a new entrance, and raising the living room floor to enable us to create an archway into the dining room (plus other stuff like extending the kitchen) it is functional and beautiful. Luckily house prices have shot up plus the value we've added so we're still on a profit despite what it's cost. Not quite finished because he hasn't finished building the front porch yet, but it's within sight if we don't die of old age first.
