Thread 9 - TalkLair: “Russell's teapot goes on being round”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 8).

The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with summer flowers - should bloody well be, what with all that rain. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

What a treat being able to see what he's up to! What was he actually doing in the woods, could you tell?

Aren't Spaniels scent-dogs? Could he be snaffling truffles?

MavisMcMinty · 03/09/2023 14:14

It’s so adorable when he runs, all you can see is his ears flapping up and down!

I don’t think he has any purpose in mind, he’s just patrolling what he thinks of as his territory, as we live in the woods, there’s no garden boundary, and we rarely see other people or dogs. He didn’t seem all that interested in the neighbour and her lady-labrador, there was very little interaction until he was in their garden and she looked at his collar tag.

At one point in the woods she told him to “go home” and he did stop in his tracks for a minute. I tried to phone her just now to thank her (macman just collected him from the garden with a shouted “thanks!”, didn’t actually speak to her or apologise) and to suggest she says “Go and see Mavis/macman” as he understands that, should she see him again.

Anyway, GoPros are brilliant, 5* review from me.

Oh that sounds brilliant @MavisMcMinty - especially the flappy ears! I’m glad he met a nice neighbour not the gun-toting farmer.

Just listened to this Guardian podcast about their brilliant “Experience” column in the Saturday magazine, and although I was much less invested in the third and final story, I gasped and OMGd my way through the first and laughed then SOBBED my way through the second. Well worth half an hour of anyone’s time.

The curious world of the Guardian’s Experience column – podcast

Rebecca Liu discusses her role as a commissioning editor at the Guardian’s Experience column and we hear three stories from those who have been featured in the column

I remember having a little fry at the baby bird story at the time.

MavisMcMinty · 03/09/2023 18:49

I think I read the one with the “stranger living in her house for 6 months” at the time of publication, but found her own telling of her story really terrifying, the printed version seemed far more benign (iirc). Hadn’t read the other two.

Badger's GoPro adventures sound most excellent!

Just gonna test the “Thanks” button, Kuc, let me know what happens!

Exciting! I got this:

The thumbnail is weird, you have to click on it to get the whole image.

So it’s a kind of “like” button, basically? Must say I found all the “likes” on Twitter very gratifying and addictive.

CyanCrystalViolet · 04/09/2023 13:29

Yikes, so much of that resonates. I have to force myself not to visit when I have a deadline as, like the article’s author, I can lose a day to Relationships or AIBU.

I’ve learnt so much in the decade I’ve been reading. Since my dad died in 2013 I’ve had very few people to go to for advice, so MN threads have been helpful for virtually every issue I’ve encountered, be it employment, education, car issues, unreasonableness or relationships. The latter in particular has been a huge help as I really knew nothing about healthy romantic relationships, but thanks to MN (and some therapy) I now have much stronger boundaries.

That said, I’ve noticed a general decline in the last few years with lots of fightiness and nastiness. The difference in tone is really apparent in pre-2014 threads.

CyanCrystalViolet · 04/09/2023 13:30

@Kucinghitam do you get a notification as well? Otherwise it’s going to be difficult to see who has liked your posts as a thread moves on.

Nope, I didn't see any notifications. TBH I'm not entirely sure what the point of this function is, but perhaps it will grow on me.

So you know that x number of people have liked/thanked you, but you don't know who they are, is that right?

Britinme · 04/09/2023 13:41

Is this on the website? Doesn't seem to be on the iPad app.

If you click on the little thanks thing, it says who has done the thanking.

@Britinme I think for now it is only on the browser version, but will be introduced in the next app update?

OP posts:
BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 04/09/2023 13:49

It's a trial feature, launched today, Brit. I've just added one to your post to see whether they are visible.to you on the app even if you can't add them yourself.

Britinme · 04/09/2023 13:50

Thanks @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn , but not visible. I'll check the browser when I'm on my desktop.

Tricyrtis2022 · 04/09/2023 16:37

Me and the next door neighbour get on very well, though we don't see that much of each other. Earlier I sent her a link to a piece of music I'd enjoyed and thought she'd like. Went to get the laundry in and heard the music drifting out of her windows. A small thing but it made me smile.

Britinme · 04/09/2023 19:15

Thanks is an option on desktop and on the iPhone app, but not yet on the iPad app.

MouseMinge · 04/09/2023 21:14

I'm slightly disgruntled because I was getting ready to watch The Woman in the Wall which was on Sunday and Monday last week but only on Sunday this week. Bah! Also disgruntled because I got some curtain hooks delivered today and they are a tiny bit too small. I thought I'd measured the gap bits in the hooks I have that do fit my rail but obviously not. I shall now have to buy some more. Bah!

Other than that all is well in Worthing. Glorious weather, adorable cats, a weekend with Seamus my greyhound nephew and lots of sewing to get on with this week.

Britinme · 04/09/2023 21:50

We're off on vacation on September 13th, via offspring in NJ on the way down and fitting in a one day visitor to DH's granddaughter in NC as well as a stay in Maryland near a beach, a visit to a friend in Washington DC and a day touristing there, and a day in Williamsburg, VA doing touristy things. A lot of driving will be involved but it should be fun. I begin to understand why Americans fly a lot.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 04/09/2023 21:57

It seems if somebody 'thanks' your post, that shows up in notifications - so you'll see it even if the thread has moved on. Could be handy when catching up on long threads where someone has made a good point but the conversation has moved on too far to mention it without derailing things.
