Thread 9 - TalkLair: “Russell's teapot goes on being round”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 8).

The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with summer flowers - should bloody well be, what with all that rain. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Ah. I try not to download apps for websites, after Twitter was ruined for me by their app, which just showed me massive text page-filling tweets one at a time, no trending side panel, no tweep profiles, it was awful.

duc748 · 23/08/2023 13:22

Amen to that! It's a bugbear of mine, we are always being encouraged to 'download the app', left, right and centre, And I think, I don't want more garbage on my mobe/laptop, and usually the 'proper' site works better than the app anyway.

An Edit button? Gosh!

(Testing testing)

Belated happy birthday to MrBritinme!

And exciting news about the edit function. I am a horrible typist so the chance to edit will be most welcome!

Tricyrtis2022 · 23/08/2023 17:44

Ooh, an edit button! Let's test it.

It works :-)

weaseleyes · 23/08/2023 17:54

I'm looking forward to oooh, you edited wars!

Britinme · 23/08/2023 20:08

I am now on my desktop looking at Mumsnet on Chrome, but there's no edit function on the three little dots. Is this personal? Is it because I am in forrin?

Britinme · 23/08/2023 20:08

Oh duh. I just found it. Of course it's just on my post not on anybody else's....

Arf! I assume MNHQ have had the good sense to put a fairly short time limit on editing (just adding this bit here as a test) though it will be a great deal funnier if they haven't.

Just testing to see where the Edited announcement pops up and if it appears before every edit. I have super-powers on a forum that shall remain nameless and there is enormous fun to be had silently editing the work of trolls and then observing the meltdown.

MouseMinge · 23/08/2023 20:29

I like the chance to edit for when I miss out words or do bad spelling.

Gonners · 23/08/2023 20:34

Okay, so "edited" only appears at the end of the post, however much you tinker with it, and you can't edit the same post twice. That's great - it's so annoying when you realise you've left out a crucial word like "not".

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 23/08/2023 20:40

Needs some decorating, but I'd want to keep the bath and the writing desk: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/133735610#/?channel=OVERSEAS

DeanElderberry · 23/08/2023 20:49

Oh very nice. Pleasant setting, too.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 23/08/2023 21:02

Not as good a garden as this one https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/138669743#/?channel=OVERSEAS
but a decent space for the middle of town

DeanElderberry · 23/08/2023 21:23

Roscrea is an interesting town, too, massive castle bang in the middle, and the remains of an early monastic site including a round tower. That house would be easy walking distance to Dunnes and Tesco, slightly further to Lidl but still doable. Not sure how used it is to people moving into it.

I edited my above message three times!

I know the Mayo one is 70k more but as they're both a lot of house for the money anyway, the Mayo one is bigger, has a fabulous garden and is in a nice location. I took against the Roscrea one because it's where my mum's from and I still have family (who I have nothing to do with because they're just too much). The house was giving me the fear of when we used to stay there when I was a child and although as a child it was good the last time we went to stay we only lasted a day before heading outside of town because there were actual bed bugs and fleas. One of my uncles from Castlerea had driven us down and my youngest female cousin who was a little dote had wanted to come with us. When we got there and went inside she cried to go home because it was a bold house. She wasn't wrong.

Btw, if you open the map for the Mayo one and make it smaller four times, you'll see Castlerea on the map. It's just to the right of Ballyhaunis on the N60. If you go further right you'll see Strokestown. It has the second widest street in Ireland, despite being a small town, and Strokestown Park House is home to the National Famine Museum. I visited that in 1997 when I was doing research for my undergraduate dissertation on the famine in Ireland.

Although she wasn't even around during the famine they have the image below blown up to life size at the entry foyer of the museum of the fabulous Countess Markievicz.

Oops! Can't was a typo for can, which just goes to show - er - incompetence?

DeanElderberry · 24/08/2023 07:42

Did you stay in that actual house MouseMinge? I know lots of people in Roscrea and none of them showed signs of bedbugs or fleas.

Big garden space too. I'd like to see more about the coach house, though.

SinnerBoy · 24/08/2023 09:59

Happy Birthday, 10smith! We had a few good conversations, in The Other Place.

Tricyrtis2022 · 24/08/2023 10:38

10smith, I remember him. Nice bloke.

MouseMinge · 24/08/2023 13:18

@DeanElderberry Roscrea is a lovely town and my prejudices are based on some scummy members of the family that make me never want to go there again. It's not even a tiny bit logical!

So many useful things being bought. A recent purchase of mine was one of those things you hang socks on to dry. The previous one was plastic and despite being put away after every use, it started to crack. The new one is a mix of aluminium and stainless steel and it has 36 pegs, so holds a lot more socks than the old one.
