If you were my house keys where would you be??

I have a horrible feeling they have been missing since Sunday, and as much as I knew I didn’t know where they were (been using the spare) I didn’t realise they were missing missing until today. When I tried to properly look.

Think I just assumed I’d left them in the car since our weekend trip out but didn’t actually look until today. Because I had the spare so didn’t need them immediately. And because well, I’m a bloody idiot clearly 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️. My husband is out with car 7-7 for work and by they time he’s back we’re into children’s bedtimes, then I’m shattered so didn’t go out to look and have failed to ask him to check. Like I said, I’m an idiot.

So. Back to the thread title. Where are the little buggers? I know I couldn’t find them Tuesday as I definitely used the single spare. Doing my best to work out what I did Monday and therefore which key I used. I feel like I’ve looked in the obvious & un-obvious places. Any psychic brainwaves most appreciated. Thanks.

I usually try to hang them up soon as get in to minimise this, and or keep them in the same pocket when not using them.

Made the error of being wet and put them in the washer the other day.

FootSoreandFamcyFree · 29/07/2023 20:21

In a pocket, coat, hoodie, pair of trousers you wore once and put to one side?

nonman · 29/07/2023 20:21

your jacket pocket? Also check the car again, use a torch to down the side of the seats

Pockets
Bags
Down the back of wherever you usually put keys (we keep ours on the recipe books in the kitchen, if someone moves a recipe book they often fall down there)
Shed (ours is locked so often I’ll go out to the shed with the keys)
Side of sofa (fell out of pockets)

Failing that… do you have a toddler? If so they’ll be in his/her box where you keep toys, probably in the base of a toy truck or inside a dolls house 😂

This! We have a key pot to put them in. But I can’t remember if it was mine or my husbands keys that were used to get in, and if it was one of us or the children who opened the door. Husbands keys made it back into the pot. I’m normally the more reliable one at putting them away.

You used a differnt bag on Monday and they are still in it.

You left them in some trousers that are now in the laundry bin.

You wore a raincoat on Monday and they are in the pocket.

You put the keys on the floor of the car for some reason and they shifted to under the seat.

You put them in the bin/fridge absentmindedly

Shayisgreat · 29/07/2023 20:25

Work bag?
Gym bag?
Pocket of the jacket you sometimes wear?
Child's dollhouse?
That cubby hole in the hallway?

have tried with torch. Worth another go though.

In the lock on the outside of the door?
Fridge
Toilet
Inside a boot or shoe

Barleysugar86 · 29/07/2023 20:28

walk through the front door and trace your steps you would usually take- for me its hall shoe rack then into the bedroom to sit down and put on slippers. examine any flat surfaces you'd encounter along the route.

Examine everything in your handbag or that was in your handbag (I've lost mine inside a folded umbrella before so you never know!).

Check all pockets of everything you have worn or carried in the last week. Include dressing gowns, sometimes I open the door for a parcel early morning and slip them back into a pocket here.

User16496743 · 29/07/2023 20:28

I would check the car floor again, they could have shifted quite a lot in nearly a week if it's been driven round

User16496743 · 29/07/2023 20:29

Also upstairs, I have gone upstairs before with keys in my hand and plonked them down in odd places.

MorganSeventh · 29/07/2023 20:33

Are they definitely in the house, or could they be somewhere like on the floor under your desk at work? Or you've left them on top of a toilet cistern at work, and someone has handed them into reception?

/done both

NightDreaming · 29/07/2023 20:33

Right. Will check all trouser, jacket, coat, dressing gown pockets. Toddlers toy boxes, starting with most used (and then down to least used as I get more & more desperate). All shoes. All bags

definitely not in fridge, that’s almost empty, there’s not where for them to hide. No gym bag.

thanks for the ideas.

You put them down in the garden because there was that pot that had fallen over / that plant that needed water / that kid's toy that needed sorting.

You were desperate for the loo whe you came in on monday so you flung them down on the ... and they fell down the back of it

Shouldbedoing · 29/07/2023 20:35

Check your husband's various pockets.

MorganSeventh · 29/07/2023 20:35

Where did you go on your weekend trip out last weekend? Have you left them there?

AtrociousCircumstance · 29/07/2023 20:36

Lining of bag, lining of coat?

Wedged somewhere near or behind the place you usually put them in the hall.

RoundedToast · 29/07/2023 20:39

Walk through what you did when you last had them & you might remember. Check all pockets. Also ask your kids if they opened the door & if where would they’ve put them.

BluePeppermint · 29/07/2023 20:41

Your husbands back pocket? This is where mine were last time we couldn't find them. Searched everywhere, including through the outside bin, before he found them.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 29/07/2023 20:42

Down the side of the sofa? I e found mine there a few times. Also check all the bags you’ve recently used and pockets of any coats.

Malarandras · 29/07/2023 20:44

Car? That’s where mine usually end up!

Madeupusernameagain · 29/07/2023 20:47

Look behind the radiators. Years ago, I lost keys for three days, ran into the house to answer a landline call. Put them on the radiator and knocked them off as I reached for the phone.

NightDreaming · 29/07/2023 20:48

FOUND THEM!!!!!
Why on earth did I not ask you amazing lot earlier???
I started on the trousers, bags & shoes. gave my husband my phone to read through this to get inspiration and he said he’d do sofas then recheck car.

in the bloody sofa!!! Officially found by my eldest (10) who offered to help but stayed away from me sensing the stress building. So lifted up the sofa cushion and there they were.

our conclusion is middle one (6) opened the door post day trip, then went straight to tv to collapse while we unpacked car and made dinner.

im trying not to cry. As that would be a ridiculous thing to do. Sofa is now being added to the “basic places to look before even beginning to think that keys might be missing” list.

thank you thank you thank you.

now time to poor the wine. xx

Tucked behind the cushions on your sofa. That's where mine tend to slip under
