Massively first world, sulky puss, middle-class wanker problem but my personal trainer is moving on and I'm gutted

LeftBereft · 28/07/2023 14:54

I know I'm going to sound like a complete knob-head but I suspect my PT is going to tell me that she's moving away when I meet her on Monday.

She's been thinking about it for a while but I've just ignored it. Now I think its going to happen.

I'm gutted. She's fantastic. I've tried other classes and other PTs but nothing/no-one compares.

She text me just now to say she's got "big news" which I think might be that she's found herself a place and maybe a gym-based job and is moving away from the area.

DP said "just get another PT". I've tried others and none compare to her - she's so brilliant.

Will you indulge me a little bit, please? Just let me wallow and sulk? I know I'm being a ridiculous, spoilt brat!

Can you do online with her?

PurBal · 28/07/2023 14:59

I know the feeling. My hairdresser moved to France and my hairs now awful, no one compared to him. I was also gutted when my gynaecologist and mortgage broker retired.

RollaCola84 · 28/07/2023 15:00

My hairdresser emigrated to Canada in 2019. I'm still gutted.

LeftBereft · 28/07/2023 15:01

Online isn't a possibility - we do some combat sports work which needs to be in-person 😭

First world entitlement. Get a life.

RJnomore1 · 28/07/2023 15:06

It’s about the relationship
you build up with people like trainers and hairdressers isn’t it. It’s not a friendship but it’s a trust based relationship and you’re perfectly entitled to be sad/upset at it coming to an end.

Ignore the stirrer there.

flipent · 28/07/2023 15:07

Of course it's a first world problem, but I absolutely understand and of course you're allowed to feel it.
There are worse things in the world, but that is going to impact your current life and routine and any disruption to that has an impact on your world.

You know that it's a privilege to be able to afford a PT - so ignore the haters.
I hope that either she isn't moving or that you do find another PT who works for you.

First world entitlement. Get a life.

People are allowed to be disappointed about stuff.

Woman2023 · 28/07/2023 15:08

Do you remember Fame from back in the 80s? There was a line in that about moving on from poor teachers as soon as you can but also not trying to hang onto good ones, as life does move on.

Funny how that stuck in my head because it's useful to remember in these situations.

I've never seen it!

But that's definitely a good motto.

Most definitely the trust and relationship build-up that's hard to re-capture.

Other threads are available.

The most annoying thing about MN these days is that OP had to preface this thread with three apologies and yet you lot still turn up

Commiserations OP - maybe it won’t be what do you think it is

I really, really hope not.

I mean, her moving is probably inevitable but I'm not mentally prepared to hear it this weekend 😆

Perhaps her big news is her leaving but she's found you an awesome replacement?

Wallow away. I was going to suggest you have all weekend to drown your sorrows and eat chocolate but maybe those aren't the right words since you do training 😂

gingerguineapig · 28/07/2023 15:28

If it's any consolation I "lost" my personal trainer when she changed career. I ended up doing a trial month with an outdoor fitness class and it has been a really good alternative (and much cheaper). It might not be exactly what you want, but you might find a surprising solution.

I now do two outdoor fitness classes - one concentrates more on bodyweight and the other on using various items of kit.

CorBlimeyGovnr · 28/07/2023 15:30

This happened to me, but he’s now a PT to the stars (well, some C list ones) and has a big online following.

I don’t think anyone would believe I used to train with him when they see who he trains now!

Dombasle · 28/07/2023 15:32

Lisa Fiit is lovely.

Bumply · 28/07/2023 15:34

Totally understand.

I've been through a few PTs.
First had to move back to Australia after helping lose a load of weight. Next two really weren't as good.
Next got kicked out of the gym I went to as some customers didn't like her "doesn't suffer fools gladly" attitude, but started up in her own studio where I followed.
She moved away during lockdown, but we still continue online.
I like that she knows how to push me, but also knows workarounds if my dodgy knees play up. I would be sad to lose her completely

LeftBereft · 28/07/2023 15:34

@gingerguineapig I actually got to know her through outdoor classes she used to run. Now we do our PT in the park because I love outdoor exercise.

I know the feeling. I had the BEST PT before Covid who, unexpectedly, passed away during lockdown. I’m yet to find anyone as knowledgeable about fitness as him.
A really talented local yoga instructor moved away around the same time and I still haven’t found a replacement.
I think about those two people, and the value they added to my life, a lot.

Maybe. But I don't want an awesome replacement. I WANT HER!

<stamps feet>

Yes to wine and chocolate.

Yes, DP thinks I'm insane when I talk about how much she's changed my life!

I'm so sorry about your PT who died. That's so sad.

Snowpaw · 28/07/2023 16:13

I fear the day my PT leaves! He's in his fifties and is such a decent chap. Really knowledgeable, down to earth, science based advice (no fad diets etc), recommends me good books to read. He's brilliant. I have lost a ton of weight and am gaining muscle, I feel great. I really get on with him. I think that's part of it - you need to feel comfortable with these people as you spend a fair bit of time with them. Moving onto a new PT is like a whole new friendship to form.

DaisyThistle · 28/07/2023 16:16

You're allowed to be upset. Something you love might be taken from you.

Ask her to recommend someone else who has a similar approach to the work. She might know someone.

Or she might be telling you she's pregnant. Or other big news.

I do know what you mean really but also… gynaecologist/mortgage broker is a really weird multi-hyphenate career 😂
