Foody city breaks?

RoseLoverrr · 28/07/2023 13:13

Looking to do a city break with my husband and no DC in Oct/Nov. Specifically interested in a foody place.

Would be flying from London so an extra bonus would be a destination served by City Airport!

Already had foody city beaks in:
Barcelona, Copenhagen, Palma, Edinburgh, Florence and Lisbon so not those.

I know Lyon is meant to be France's capital of food but not sure what it's like? Any other ideas?

Has anyone been to San Sebastián?

These sound great, thank you. Thanks to the pp and glad you're loving your Budapest experience but I'm not a fan of that cuisine as much as some others. I love Nordic cuisine or Mediterranean in particular - less carby and more fish!

Looking at City Airport destinations San Sebastián stands out.

Other places I've never been are
Rotterdam
Luxembourg
Billund
Antwerp
Zurich

Could any of these places fit the bill?

i wouldn’t suggest Luxembourg for a foody city break. Local food is very hearty German style, but there’s nothing particularly special in the local cuisine.
There are plenty of lovely restaurants and the city is lovely to visit but I’m finding everything rather overpriced these days and don’t eat out as much as I used to.

San Sebastián is amazing- I went for my birthday a few years ago and still think about the steak and tomatoes at Nestor.

WhatADrabCarpet · 28/07/2023 17:22

Another vote for Bologna courtesy of Rick Stein.

Please come back an tell us what you've decided!

Sicily is amazing for food. We travelled around and literally everywhere we ate we had fantastic food. Very memorable!

RubyMurry22 · 28/07/2023 17:23

Split or Dubrovnik- we are currently in Split and loving it but I believe that Dubrovnik is even more of a foodies paradise and want to visit there too.

notsurewhattowrite · 28/07/2023 17:27

Seville- amazing food and gorgeous city

Crikeyalmighty · 28/07/2023 17:28

@GEC44 I agree- we've just come back from Valletta ( beautiful ) and the food was fantastic and reasonable too. Did Michelin twice at around £45 a head

Granada. The tapas is 👌🏻

Don't go with a vegetarian though.

I was going to suggest San Sebastián when I read the title. The food is amazing - we combined it with Bilbao.

In San Sebastián find the place that does the original basque cheesecake (it was recommended on the food tour we did). I still dream about it - we got some everyday we were there.

Also recommend Bordeaux, obviously famous for wine but the food was also amazing.

Rotterdam - No. Once you have had a rijstaffel you are done. Although rijstaffel is lovely
Luxembourg - No again
Billund - only if you really want to go to Legoland.
Antwerp - could go from here to Ghent, Ghent is amazing
Zurich - no idea but suspect it's expensive

Went to Gdansk for a wedding a few years ago, I was completely blown away by the food. Stayed in the centre of the old town.

VicSynix · 28/07/2023 19:08

Antwerp - amazing for art and architecture, some fabulous galleries and museums. Food is mostly traditional Belgian cuisine though, which I very much enjoy but others might not.

MyYoniSaysNoni · 28/07/2023 19:12

Athens? I took the dc to Athens thinking they would be massively impressed by all the history and archeology. Instead of that they still speak wistfully about the various meals we had and stare at me blankly if i mention the Acropolis.

Im not sure if all greek food is universally amazing, or if my hotel receptionist was just exceptionally good at recommending where to eat.

dogsweetdog · 28/07/2023 19:17

No I haven't but my son has and said it's amazing. It's top of our list for next year.

countrygirl99 · 28/07/2023 19:17

If you like Norwich how about Helsinki or Tampere.

countrygirl99 · 28/07/2023 19:19

Not sure how auto correct turned nordic into Norwich

fufulina · 28/07/2023 19:21

I’ve been told by lots of different friends that San Sebastián is the place for food.

BarelyLiterate · 28/07/2023 19:23

Bilbao and / or Donostia / San Sebastián. (Donostia is the Basque name). You can visit Michelin starred restaurants, or you can just tour the bars with the locals enjoying the fantastic local seafood, tapas & pintxos. It’s foodie heaven, and blissfully free of the ‘Brits abroad’ brigade.

Roselilly36 · 28/07/2023 19:25

Alicante city, is fabulous and so overlooked by people looking to holiday in the Costas’. Would be ideal for a foodie break,

SiobhanSharpe · 28/07/2023 19:32

Both Bilbao and San Sebastián are truly fantastic for food, even in the winter there is a grear outdoor eating and drinking vibe. Many tapa bars concentrate on one speciality, I went to one that did gorgeous egg dishes such as poached quails eggs on peppers/anchovies, on fried bread. Others specialise in oysters, or chuleta (a steak cut) .
In the south, I'd also add Cadiz to the list along with Seville and Sanlucár. Jerez is not bad either! Fantastic sherries too.

Just returned from a two city break to Warsaw and Gdansk and was very impressed with the food in both places. Went for the history and was pleasantly surprised by the gastronomy. Both cities have superb food markets. We ate our heads off and it was very reasonable.

Keykaty · 29/07/2023 16:19

In (my) order of merit -

  1. San Sebastian
  2. Bologna
  3. Lyon
  4. Granada
  5. Malaga
pepino · 29/07/2023 16:28

San Sebastián and Bilbao are on my list of places to visit. Both are supposed to be fabulous places for food.

Newusernameaug · 29/07/2023 16:31

Bologna - they do a food and Ferrari tour which is superb

Phineyj · 29/07/2023 17:03

We did a great gastronomic tour in Thessaloniki once. Not what we'd gone for but it turned out to be the highlight of the trip. A Greek graduate took us to loads of places and we took it all back in plastic boxes once we'd run out of room and ate it for the rest of the visit!
