Foody city breaks?

RoseLoverrr · 28/07/2023 13:13

Looking to do a city break with my husband and no DC in Oct/Nov. Specifically interested in a foody place.

Would be flying from London so an extra bonus would be a destination served by City Airport!

Already had foody city beaks in:
Barcelona, Copenhagen, Palma, Edinburgh, Florence and Lisbon so not those.

I know Lyon is meant to be France's capital of food but not sure what it's like? Any other ideas?

Has anyone been to San Sebastián?

A vote for San Sebastián. So much delicious food for every budget! And you can hire a car and spend a day in wine country as well

TheFlis12345 · 28/07/2023 15:44

Porto or Seville.

AnnaMagnani · 28/07/2023 15:47

I wasn't crazy about the food in Warsaw but there is loads to do and I preferred it to Krakow.

There is of course a lovely cafe with traditional cake as you would expect from somewhere that was in the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Palermo

Another vote for Funchal. Very reasonable prices.
This was my favourite restaurant https://akuafunchal.pt/?lang=en

Akua – by Chef Júlio Pereira

Wouldn't do Zurich unless you want a second mortgage. And the food is not that great there overall.

But you could fly to Basel and head to Strasbourg or Colmar in the Alsace- beautiful, great wine and lots of marvellous food. Or as others said San Sebastián or Budapest were both great

Whataretheodds · 28/07/2023 16:20

I was going to suggest San Sebastian. Loads of people have recommended it to me.

ThreeRingCircus · 28/07/2023 16:23

I adored Budapest and Vienna.

Lyon, France. Gastronomic capital of Europe according to them which I didn't believe until I went with dh on his work trip. It was fabulous food wise and they had a really lovely Christmas market to boot. We went early December, and some sort of light exhibition all around the centre which was amazing. (But might have been a one off)

Just back from Copenhagan and the food was amazing - far better than I expected. A great selection of really lovely old world wines too. The city itself is lovely with lots to see.

Thanks, yeah as per the OP we've been many times and love it, but not for now.

There are Malaga flights from City. DH and I went for a few nights last year and had some fab meals. Such a lovely city and reasonably priced too

Thelastofbus · 28/07/2023 16:28

I immediately thought San Sebastián!

Thelondonone · 28/07/2023 16:30

Loved Lyon, gastronomique capital of France. Just the right size, lots to do, amazing food and wine. Cheap flights when not ski season.

JasonOsCubanHeels · 28/07/2023 16:30

Definitely not Porto for food

BarrelOfOtters · 28/07/2023 16:31

We ate really well in Croatia. Italian influence but with a bit of a twist. And great wine.

Tallin had great food too.

Malaga is a lovely city.

San Sebastian all day every day - can't wait to get back there. Beautiful beach, lovely walks and fab food. Can even nip to France for the day on the train - you have to change trains as the rail gauges are different. Fab place

Bobbybobbins · 28/07/2023 16:33

San Sebastián is amazing! We combined it with Bilbao (I think the food was even better there tbh and the Guggenheim is incredible) and Biarritz. If you do go to San Sebastián, try to get to Guernica as well as the Spanish civil war museum is worth a visit.

Avignon / Arles

Will be nice weather too and gorgeous things to do

If you go to Lyon you can do a day trip to Arbois, a very pretty wine centre, or Valence

The main food markets in both Lyon and Avignon are amazing

Have you ever been to Beaune? It’s around 2 hours drive from Lyon and is, in my opinion, the best place to eat and drink in the whole of France.

Amazing restaurants, right in wine country, a lovely weekend market and a beautiful town in its own right.

lastminutewednesday · 28/07/2023 16:43

Ooh! We are going to Beaune in two weeks on our way to Lake Annecy!

Slovenia. Go to Lake Bled. Try the incredible local wines and cheeses. Eat the delicious home made soup under the arches in the market place and book dinner in the restaurant on the castle terrace. Buy fresh berries from the market stalls to try with the local cream cheese cake. Then do a day trip to Lake Bohinj and book lunch at the incredible restaurant there. Michelin-star style food at a fraction of the price.

You could also go to Ambleside in the Lake District and eat at Old Stamp House and Kysty - both very good. They serve the local perfumed yellow raspberries that grow wild around Ullswater. There are probably other great places near by.

MissAmbrosia · 28/07/2023 17:15

Lyon has great food. I have San Sebastian on my list. There are some very good restaurants in Strasbourg and Colmar. We did the most fantastic tasting menu in Lisbon - we still talk about it 3 years on

LilyLemonade · 28/07/2023 17:18

Lyon is really good for food.
Rotterdam is a fantastic city but Dutch food is woeful.

Ooh! We are off to Slovenia later in the summer and can’t wait now. Any more food recommendations for Bled, Ljubjana or Piran welcomed.

Carcassonne, G'dansk , Madrid .

Carcassonne, despite being a very small city has a good few Michelin starred restaurants. Including a stunning one in a tower of the citadel. G'dansk is very young and up and coming with really interesting choices. Madrid - well it has everything.
